View Full Version : Hot scissor trim?

Has anybody heard of this? I remember some salons in Ukraine did it, it's cutting hair with hot scissors to keep it from splitting. But now that I thought of it, I wonder if it really works, because the heat would probably cause more splits than reduce them  I would like to hear everyone's opinion on this:cheese:

There is also a technique where you twist strands of hair and then burn the ends that are sticking out, off with a lighter or candle. It supposedly doesn't cause more damage than regular trimming. The idea is that you seal the ends by applying heat to it just like you would do with a piece of string to keep it from unraveling. Because a single hair is basically a collection of fibers with a core and and outer layer, just like a string, I can see how it might work that way but I have no experience with either so I don't know if it causes damage in the long run.

The hair burning scares me but I can see how hot scissors might work very well as long as the hair dresser is careful only to touch and cut the ends with the hot scissors. If I knew someone who did that I might be willing to try it on just my hemline to see how my hair copes with it. If it doesn't work and causes damage it's easily fixed by getting another trim. I would try it myself but I'm too clumsy to handle hot scissors and I don't want to ruin my good hair scissors.

ETA: here is a video explaining the principle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJLMAgRpgBw
It sounds reasonable but maybe I'm missing something.

I did that once, many years ago before I joined LHC. What happened was that they first measured the thickness of some single hair strands with a small device and then they chose the temperature according to my thickness.

It did help a lot with the splits back then. I stopped going, because it was quite expensive. I wasn't taking care of my hair properly and the splits reduced noticeably. I'm not sure I would get the same results today, because I'm much more careful when handling my hair.

And here is what The Beauty Brains has to say about it: http://thebeautybrains.com/2009/05/06/can-jaguar-hot-scissors-seal-split-ends/

I'm curious to know if those pictures were photoshopped. I wonder if someone here with a microscope can do a mini experiment with shed hair or something

I never heard of hot scissors before. I'm skeptical about the scissors (but my hair is very fine and I always avoid heat).

I'm curious to know if those pictures were photoshopped. I wonder if someone here with a microscope can do a mini experiment with shed hair or something Someone in the comments there made the very valid observation that the picture with the hot scissor effect not only had a completely smooth clean cut but also no scales from the cuticle so I'd say it is photoshopped to hell.

From a professional standpoint, stay away from heated scissors. It's completely a gimmick.

I'd be afraid for my poor fingers! shudder: I could see my fingers getting all over those scissors; I have enough trouble keeping them from going between the blades, let alone only touching the handles!

I'm not the most dexterous person on the planet . . . Is that the right word? Well, you get what I mean! :)

I probably wouldn't attempt doing it myself either, but when I go to Ukraine to visit I might get it done at the salon and see if it works. I'm not sure if they do that in salons in the US.
