As a kid one of my favourite movies was The Flight of Dragons. Rewatching it the other day I realised the two main female characters Princess Melissande and Danielle of the Woodlands both have very long hair. Did your favourite movies as a kid feature long hair and if so do you think it influenced you to appreciate or want long hair ?

Well, my favorite childhood movie was the Muppet Movie. Does Miss Piggy count?

My other favorite movie was Roman Holiday, which featured long hair for the beginning of the film. I was always devastated when she cut it off, even though she looked beautiful with her new style.

Miss Piggy counts in my book :p
Danielle when she first lets her hair down from under her cap cause they call her a boy. Long hair seems to be magic in this movie :p

Haha, thanks! :)

I've never seen Flight of The Dragons. Maybe I should watch it for the hair.

Yes! Robin Wright Penn in The Princess Bride, she had classic blonde waves, all floaty and soft looking. It was very beautiful and totally princessey!
Mine was lke a horses tail in comparison, thick, dark, unruly and usually hiding a few twigs or some old chewing gum.
I learnt the meaning of envy that summer!

I never thought about it before, but since you asked...various Disney movies, the Star Wars trilogy, The Princess Bride... it appears that all of my favorite movies from my childhood had long haired main characters...huh...

I'm now wondering if I liked those movies and they just happened to have long hair, or if I liked the movies because they had long hair...

I didn't have ONE favorite childhood movie, I watched quite a few. My tastes varied.

There was no long hair in The Goonies. Andy had what? APL? Barely brushing BSL at the longest?

The little girl in Troll (the fake Heather O'Rourke) had lengthy hair though.

There was NO hair in Full Metal Jacket.

No noteworthy hair in Nightmare on Elm Street, although Nancy did have the thick stuff, but it looked rather frizzy to me.

Ripley had barely shoulder length in Alien, and even shorter in Aliens. Lambert in Alien had it up all the time, but it didn't look like there was any considerable length there, and in Aliens, Newt's hair was filthy, I never looked at the length. Vasquez and Dietrich had the buzz cuts, Ferro wore a helmet the whole time onscreen.

Sarah Connor had that ridiculous 80's blown out pampered poodle look in Terminator.

There were some decent updos in The Horror Express, but I was so enraptured by Telly Savalas' bald pate, that was the only head I paid attention to.

Yes, my parents let me watch just about anything when I was little

'The Last Unicorn'? Actually, yes... Amalthea had calf-length hair I think. AND IT WAS SO PRETTY.

I remember as a kid I used to love watching the Hercules Series with Kevin Sorbo and The Xena series with Lucy Lawless. I never saw myself as much of a girl when I was young and I think Xena was the one that convinced me that you could have girly hair and not have to be weak or constantly swooning over boys.

Also Storm from the X-men. I always used to pretend to be storm when we played X-men.

I totally forgot about Xena! Now that you mention it, I absolutely idolised her way back when.. THAT explains my love of long hair completely, and any other theories can just go out the window now. xD

Not really; my absolute favourite growing up was Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Belle's hair isn't all that long, just constantly perfect looking. :p

I remember in The Sword in the Stone when mad madam Mim is singing a song about how she's magic and she can change herself and she decides to demonstrate that she can make herself attractive . . . by giving herself an extra two foot of hair :p Sure she halves her weight and doubles her height too but I remember the hair stood out for me.

My favorite movie from when I was a kid was The Last Unicorn. My Dad took me to the theater to see it, I was 5 at the time. I LOVED it. Actually, I still love it. I even have it on DVD now. Amalthea's hair when she is turned into a human is gorgeous.

Lets see my first favorite movie was Aristocats..... I dont remember any long-hairs in that movie...

Ahaha...anyways! Next was The Little Mermaid. Ahhh yes she had beautiful and long hair! :)

Then it was The Parent Trap, which featured a big hair cut. I think I can contribute my scissor happiness to that. :P I should have listened to Ariel!

I don't have a fave childhood movie, but I distinctly remember watching Aladdin and wanting Jasmine's thick hair sooooo badly, and wishing that all I had to do was stick a few scrunchies in at various lengths to get it!

Oh man, of course! I LOVED Xena and dreamed about having hair like Gabrielle...mine is even brighter than hers is now :D

I was also a sucker for X-men, I always wanted to be Rogue because she was tough as nails and could fly, oh yeah (and Gambit always wanted to be all over her, swoon!). She had the big crazy henna red curly hair with white on top, and the curls were so outrageous, I loved it...which is why now that I have henna hair, I think I just came up with my Halloween costume :) Ha!

My favorite childhood movie was Thomasina, The Cat Who Thought She Was God (I think that was the full title). No long hair to speak of, no more than about BSL anyway. But I did grow up to be like Witch Laurie, sort of. I have a zoo of cast-off pets, but most of them weren't injured when they came to me.

Spidermom, the version I watched was called The 3 Lives of Thomasina.

My favourite childhood movie was about what amounted to underwater smurfs, so no, not really. :p

Lion King? Well Mufasa did have a pretty good mane.

I also really liked "10 things I hate about you," in particular Julia Stiles' character Kat, who did have quite long hair. Can't really find a good screenshot but here it is in a braid: http://s11.allstarpics.net/images/orig/7/l/7l8m7icgwu3g7g8w.jpg
Now that I think about it, I do actually remember really liking her hair, maybe she was some sort of subconscious inspiration.

Kind of like Snorks? :)

I loved The Last Unicorn & nearly named our second daughter Amalthea. It was that, Amethyst, or Callisto. Callisto won.

The long hair that stood our the most from my childhood though was Leia's when it was worn down on Endor.

The main characters in all of my favorite childhood movies were canines, haha. The Fox and the Hound, One Hundred and One Dalmatians, Balto(eternal dog geek here!) but no long haired human characters that I can remember.

One of my favourites was Mulan, and of course she cuts her hair short. I never wanted short hair, but I have to admit, if I ever were to cut, I'd prefer to do it her way. With a sword. And some dramatic music ;)

No idea what they were called in English, but that might be it.

The little mermaid did warp my hair expectations, but my number one watched movie must have been the My Little Pony movie, who had nice manes in improbable colours, but not really hair.

Funny how many people here liked movies with animals as kids. When I look around here little girls are completely crazy about the disney princess stuff.

My favourite movie is Krull, loved it when I was a kid. The heroine Lissa has beautiful long red curly hair, I love it!
