Hi, I'm just wondering whether mayonnaise is good for moisturizing the hair or adding proteins??

Protein I believe - because of the eggs :)

I think moisture, not protein. Mayonaise recipes I've seen ( the stuff that comes in jars is the same + stabalizers) only call for the egg yolk (which is fat), because it contains lecithin which is an emulsifier (IE, allows the small amount of water-based liquids like vinegar to bond with the oil that makes up the rest of the maynaise and not seperate like in a vinegrette).

I think it's protein because of the egg. But i heard soy sauce works better for protein.

Pretty sure it's both! Yolks are high in fat, but they also contain protein. And many commercially made mayonnaises contain whole egg, not just yolk. Mayo also contains some acid--either vinegar or lemon juice.
I wonder how home made coconut oil mayonnaise would turn out?

I think you'd have to make sure your kitchen was warm enough for you coconut oil to stay liquid; other than that it should work. Egg, oil, a little vinegar should be all you need. If you use a food processor, a whole egg will work just as well as the yolk only.

does the mayo actually moisturize or just layer your hair...I have seen/heard of this before but i had also at one point heard it actually only coats the hair shaft so I dont use this but if anyone can bust the myth for me..it would be great (:

If you check a condish with protein in it, you ll see it is "hydrolyzed" proteins or something like that... pure, normal and natural proteins are too big to actually enter your hair shafts, so they cut them into shorter bits artificially, so it can actually stregthen your hair (if it happens to actually need protein, that is). Pure egg proteins won't be able to do the work, they will just wash off at the end. So probably it is the oils in the mayo - and it would do a similar job without the egss :) at least that is my impression.
I am one of the few here whose hair actually needs protein, and i'm a great fan of protein conditioners (and very rarely find them in my home country), so this would be my vague and not so scientific two pence.

Thank you the informative answers.
I've always been a little "scared" of washing with eggs because I thought the proteins would effect my hair. :D
