So I was checking out a thread on Roman hair sticks this morning - and thing called a bun ring was mentioned (but no images) regarding women's hairstyles in ancient Rome.

I was really intrigued - how would they have used it? Like a sock bun or what? So I grabbed an old bangle bracelet and started to play around. Here's what I came up with....the bracelet bun. I'm sure I'm not the first person to ever do this, so if someone could please tell me what it's proper name is, I'd be thrilled.

What I did (click on thumbs to see larger images)

First slide a bangle bracelet onto a twisted section of hair:

Wrap the hair once around the ring, then make sure the ring is centered:

Wrap the twisted column of hair around the ring:
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f200/jenndances/Hair%20journal/th_photo-3-1.jpg (http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f200/jenndances/Hair%20journal/?action=view&current=photo-3-1.jpg)

Continue to wrap:

Once you get all your hair wrapped or you run out of room, you can tuck under the remaining the hair (or if you have really long hair, you can pull it all the way through for a waterfall pony):
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f200/jenndances/Hair%20journal/th_photo-6.jpg (http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f200/jenndances/Hair%20journal/?action=view&current=photo-6.jpg)

I secured it with a hair stick that went completely under the ring, but I was able to simply tuck and have it hold - the stick made me feel more secure about it LOL:

Sorry my hair is a bit messy! I'm dealing with a lot of breakage and growing out layers.

Awesome!!
Haven't seen one like this before and I was wondering about the bun ring too, when reading that roman hair toys article...I'm definitely going to try this, thank you so much for the good instructions!
Such a nice idea to let the bracelet show, I'm not very used to wearing bracelets so this is a great way for me to show off the ones I own, instead of keeping them in the drawer :D

Thank you so much! I will try this as soon as I get a bracelet like this. Ironically, I gave all those ones away a few weeks ago.

I haven't seen this before, but will have to look into Roman hairstyles now. I like the Northern European pre Roman (Celtic) styles such as the Suebian knot, but some look a bit too unusual for day to day wear.

Seems intricate to look at, but fairly simple to do. That's always good!

Very pretty, good job!

Ooh! Very pretty. And I have some bangles lying around that are very pretty but no longer slide easily onto my wrist. I knew they'd be handy for somethin!

Thanks Ladies!

I also tried this as sort of a half-bun - where I took strands from each side of my head, wove them around the ring a couple of times and let the ends loose. It looked pretty, but didn't hold well (it would have if I secured with an elastic...but I'm trying to avoid those) I think maybe if it had been a smaller ring it would have worked better because there would have been more compression. I think if you have shorter than waist hair, you could probably still do this if you use a smaller ring (a child sized bracelet, for instance.)

Anyhoo, thank you all for the feedback and now we have a way to recycle our old (un-seamed) bracelets LOL! Please post pics here if you decide to try it :-D

ETA: A word about the bracelet - try to use one that doesn't have any hard edges - some metal bangles out there do have them, and many plastic bangles have seams. I'd feel terrible if someone tried this and damaged their hair because of the bracelet.

This looks awesome.

And it's got me thinking hard about the idea of creating a hairtoy just for this for myself in a different diameter, maybe in wood or copper.
I know a standard bangle wouldn't work for me, since my hair is so thin despite the length it would be way too big...

Do you think it would hold better if it was a wavy ring?

I am so doing this! I'll have to go hunting for a good bangle for it, as all the ones I have will snag hair. This will be pretty for Christmas as it looks like a wreath. I could even 'decorate' it with shinies! Love this so much!

OMG Latte Lady! With your hair, you could probably do 2 or 3 rings starting at the crown and ending just above the nape. It would look amazing!

I've been playing with all kind of ways of weaving the hair with other rings of different shapes - I have square (diamond) shaped one...smaller circles...I don't think I have a wavy one, so I'd be interested to see if that changes the shape of the bun at all.

Hopefully we'll get to see some pictures from other people :-) I'd love to see how people modify, alter and create new designs from this. SQUEE!!

Raqdoll, I really like the bun. It looks really complicated but is so easy. Here is a variation: do it with a braid. On me, it minimized tangles when I wrapped and unwrapped the braid around the bangle. My braid tapers a lot, so it looked a little lopsided. The next time I did two braids, wrapping one clockwise and one counterclockwise, meeting in the middle. That was more symmetrical. I eventually ran out of bangle and just wrapped the ends of the braid around the base. Here it is -- just ignore the frizzies and general messiness.

I saw something called a Bun Ring at CVS drugstore the other day. It looks like a spiral metal bracelet. I didn't get one because my hair is not long enough yet.

That's lovely! :cheese: thank you so much for posting a pic!

And what a good idea using braids - for the shorter haired ladies, perhaps multiple braids wrapped around a ring would work?

Wow! That looks amazing and I never would have thought of using a bracelet in my hair! I just tried it out and looks like mine's still a bit too short to pull it off as nicely as you did. It kinda works, but I think my layers cause me to loose too much thickness towards the ends to fill out the bangle properly. I'll have to keep this in mind for later.
