View Full Version : Gibson girl styles?

Have any of you tried to create the styles from the old Gibson girl drawings? I realize those were fantasy drawings so the hairstyles may be impossible, but I'm wondering if anyone's tried anyway. :)

Well, I'm not sure which style which style in particular you are looking for, but there are a few easy tutorials out there.

Gibson tuck (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5JZOVnSjjE&feature=related)

Gibson roll (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1id5FLbm2s)

Victorian Pompadour (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRPFmWSzYTA) (Anastasia' style)

I'm pretty sure the extra thickness comes from a combination on the pompadour and numerous hair rats. ;)

I love those old Gibson girl hairstyles. I think they look good on most women, no matter her age. I used to wear the pompadour when my hair was shorter, but now I can't keep my bun up that high. After studying old photos, I decided a large backcomb would help prop it up and I bought a vintage comb, but it didn't help. I never needed to use a rat. I just made a loose, high bun and pushed it into position.

I was able to do a Gibson tuck once and my bangs look goofy with a pompadour. :\

I've done the pompadour before, and it looks fine without a rat, but it always falls flat by the end of the day on me if I don't put something under the poufy parts. :(

How are you doing the pompadour, Melon Collie (cute name, btw ;))? And how are your bangs cut? I've always thought the pompadour looks a bit better with bangs ala Anastasia (http://cdn.babble.com/famecrawler/files/2010/11/Anastasia_1.jpg).

I found some interesting articles at the Ladies' Encyclopedia (http://chestofbooks.com/food/household/Woman-Encyclopaedia-4/index.html), searching for 'hair'. This one (http://chestofbooks.com/food/household/Woman-Encyclopaedia-4/2-The-Art-Of-Hairdressing-A-Practical-Coiffure.html) is for a basic pompadour, but it has fewer pictures than I'd like. I thought the article on making waves (http://chestofbooks.com/food/household/Woman-Encyclopaedia-3/The-Art-Of-Hairdressing-Waving-Marcel-And-Pin-Waving.html) was interesting, too.

Ladies then certainly weren't shy about their hairpieces!

They're blunt cut straight across, but from the picture you posted I may be able to pull something off if I pin a layer of my bangs back. :)

Thankies!

I do the tuck frequently. My hair is quite not long enough for a roll. And the poumpadour is a little too old fashioned for me, but I may give it a go in a bit.

Is there such thing as too long for the tuck?

Maybe, but I've seen it done with a little longer than waist long hair.

I adore all things Victorian/Edwardian including the Gibson girl look, but I can never get my parting to disappear when I try the pompadour. I comb my hair back and it just flops right back to the sides, dry or wet. It's so frustrating.

In the Edwardian Farm series, Ruth Goodman (the main female on-screen) demonstrated how she did her style. She has hair of about waist length. She bought a great enormous false plait (consistently about 2 inches wide, no taper, long enough to wrap twice around the head). She combed her hair out normally and arranged it so it was laying flat with a center parting (some in front, some behind the shoulders, all falling straight down from the parting). She then put the double looped plait on her head like one would wear a crown and pinned it in place. Finally, she lifted her own hair, section by section, over the plait and into the center of her head, where she (bit by bit) pinned it in a cinnabun-like bun. This was slightly messy and neatened up by plonking a beret-esque hat on top and pinning it through the bun / false plait with a massive hat pin.

This is the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEi7zEXd6t4) of Edwardian Farm, Panth was talking about, the hair styling begins at minute 13. Thank you for remembering me of Edwardian Farm, an excellent program for Edwardian lovers.

And has anyone tried this? I would love to see your pictures of Gibson styles.

Meanwhile, I couldn't resist and made a Gibson tuck. At first it was a bit hard to put all the thick ponytail inside the rest of the hair so excuse all the flying hairs :D (and the ugly bathroom tiles)

Ooh, that's pretty, Muntchka! Does the Gibson girl tuck only work with curly hair? I've tried it, and it keeps slipping into a flipped-over ponytail.

I did this style recently. http://www.youtube.com/user/lilithedarkmoon#p/u/18/TIPrzATuBec It's similar to a Gibson Tuck, but without tucking the hair into a ponytail. My hair never looked good like that. This style is very easy and I managed it well on my hip/butt length hair. Although I wasn't very careful and I did have some detangling to do.

I gave the twist thingy a try. :D My hair isn't long enough to put the knot on the side, so it's on the top and there's more pins than I'd like. It doesn't quite look like the picture, though- maybe that's one of their fancy hair pieces...

Thank you MaraJSkywalker. I followed the link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5JZOVnSjjE&feature=related) posted by 2peasinapod and the girl on the video seems to have straight soft hair so this isn't only for wavy/wurly/ curly hair. Believe me this wasn't my first attempt of this hairstyle, the first ones were all messy.

The hair knot looks so beautiful lapispimpernel, even though it's not on the side. Need to try it :)

I used an extra long scarf, rolled my hair up the scarf (messy), tied the scarf above my forehead, tucked all the messy loose stuff into the space behind the scarf, then partially untied the scarf and continued wrapping it around so it lay under the rolled hair and tied it at the nape.

Luvley! Did you capture the ends in the scarf and roll from the bottom?

neko_kawaii

Yes, like I would roll my hair up in a curler. In the Gibson Roll video the lady has two pieces that she sandwiches her hair with and slides down to the bottom, then rolls up very neatly. I just did the best I could with a scarf and tucked it a bit to tidy it up.

I am so bummed because I tried the Gibson tuck this morning and could not make it work! If I pulled my pony up to much the whole thing just came apart, but if I did it much less the elastic would not go in! I am guessing that this is operator error, but is it possible that my hair is to thick and not quite long enough??

My "Tea Ladies" and I have been watching this series at our monthly Movie Nights. It is delightful! The costumes and hair are wonderful.

Did you pull the pony back, away from the head or up, near the head?
At first I was pulling it back and it didn't worked. If you are already pulling it up I guess you just need to find the middle between pulling too much and too little.

I only tried the Gibson tuck once, and it was a tricky thing to do with classic length hair! But I liked how it turned out:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=7126&pictureid=94423

I must try these styles again, I find them very nice, even if rather tricky with my length...And moreover, after unrolling this tuck, I had some nice waves, but I also had some undesired detangling to do . Must be more careful next time...

I was inspired by Muntchka and SwordWomanRiona's tucks and having just learned of Edwardian Twists I had to try the two together.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=8248&pictureid=110553

My hair kept falling through the bottom of the pocket like a turned pony tail so I ended up making a twisted bun on the outside of the pocket and then turning that inside. Any ideas besides my hair is just a tad thin for this style?

SwordWomanRiona
August 18th, 2011, 05:09 PM
I love how it's turned out, neko_kawaii! Beautiful and very elegant :) . And nope, I don't think your hair's too thin for this style.
Same problem here with the ponyail coming out! I tried to remake the tuck a couple of days ago and the tail wouldn't stay in!! It seems I need a bit of practise to get the tuck reasonably right again *sigh*. The blasted ponytail just flips over the elastic again and again and it won't stay inside!
Of course, the fact that I had to get the bus in ten minutes didn't help, what an adequate time to try a tricky hairstyle .

Muntchka
August 19th, 2011, 02:55 AM
I think it looks great, neko_kawaii. And the twisted bun seems a good idea. Many times my pony tail also come out.
This is a beautiful hairstyle but I think it requires some practice, no mater what your hair type is. I still can't make mine without tons of hairs flying around :p

I wonder if smaller braids waves (or curls) would encourage it to stay in the pocket. . .

I have found it harder to make the Gibson tuck work as my hair has gotten longer, to the point where I don't attempt it any more. I have read that it can help to move the starting ponytail higher as your hair gets longer. There are a couple other styles that give me a similar "hair-mysteriously-disappearing-into-smooth-updo" feeling: Franny's Southern Tease (http://www.frannyslonghairstyles.com/apps/videos/videos/show/9616632-southern-tease-updo-hairstyle), and the flipped bun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnVxQ_JernI).

I tried the Gibson tuck again today and I sort of managed it at last! It wasn't as neat as my first attempt, though, I suppose I need more practice.
I watched a video on YouTube that was really helpful - the girl in question has tailbone-classic length hair, more or less, so I found out how to better attempt the tuck with 'longer than usual' hair.

I tried the roll today. It's a bit outside of my comfort zone, just because it's so different from my usual look. I should have worn it at home for a day or two before taking it to work. Oh well! No one's burst out laughing (yet) so it can't be too bad!
