Here's my problem:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=6953&pictureid=109261

I've grown my hair out enough so that MOST of the dyed part goes into my bun now, the rest is silver - just how I want it all to be eventually. While I'm waiting for it to grow, I'd like to lessen the pain a bit by investing in some hair toys that will cover my bun. I've considered those crochet bun covers and large stick slides/barettes. I've also seen some wire bun covers which I think were called "hair flowers" or something? Googling that term only comes up with actual flowers though, so I'd be grateful if someone can point me in the right direction there. Metal bun cages don't work well for me as they seem to be too heavy.

So, please share your favourite sellers of the above-mentioned items or any other ideas you have for covering a bun and I shall pay them a visit :D (Online stores only, as I'm in Australia.)

Here's some I've come up with so far (all etsy):
this (http://www.etsy.com/listing/72234900/renaissance-corded-silver-caul-snood) snood
this leather barette (http://www.etsy.com/listing/40089281/soaring-dragon-barrette) (but I already have this shape and would order a leaf or rose when he gets back)
and what do you think about this? (http://www.etsy.com/listing/75329227/blackmulti-silverwhite-scrunchie-with)
I'd even consider wearing this (http://www.etsy.com/listing/77498095/ooak-crochet-octopus-hair-bun-cover)

Ah....I just found the hair flower, it's called a "majestic hair flower". I saw a member wearing one on the hair toy addicts thread I think? You can see them here (http://www.majestichairflower.com/)

I love the little dragon clip, but I also really love your hair as is. I think it looks quite striking pulled back in your picture! But the crocheted bun covers can be really lovely. What about tying a scarf around your bun?

How about one of these? http://www.bronzejewelers.com/snoods.htm I've admired them from afar for a long time, but I'm pretty sure someone around here has used them. They do good work in general, I have one of their torcs. They don't seem to say anything about shipping to Australia, though...

That octopus is awfully cute.

Oh, what about beadmask, on etsy? http://www.etsy.com/shop/beadmask Her barrettes seem to be pretty similar to wingandtalon, but more leaves and feathers.

If you crochet or are of the crafty inclination you can make all kinds of fun things. Also... fake flowers, I love how they look in long hair or updos.

Thanks for the responses! :flowers:

trillian: thanks, I like the scarf idea. I need to go and buy some scarves!

ouseljay: I love bronzejewellers work, but they are a tad on the pricey side for me right now. One to keep in mind for the future! I LOVE that beadmask shop though, thanks for the link. I may get one of her leaf slides.

Lady Dragon: sadly, I'm not that clever (or patient!) which is why I love to buy from Etsy to support those who are more skilled than I :D Fake flowers I wear already, but sometimes I'm in the mood for something subtler.

Zepphead: wingandtalon do great work! I have their fairy slide which is of very similar shape and size, but is a fairy with outstretched wings. I love it :inlove:

If you knit, or know someone who does, this here is easy and quick to make: http://home.comcast.net/~rhymeswithfuchsia/snowflake/snowflake_snood.html

Have you thought of toning your ends a more silver colour? Or using a blue wash? It might fade it all to your natural colour, and then you wouldn't have to feel like you have to cover it.

EDIT: You could also buy some silver extensions and wrap them around your bun!

This i used to be in hairdressing and some ladies would come in with white hair that was quite ashy but once you used a toner or toner shampoo like these http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?ds=pr&pq=shampoo+toner+silvers&hl=en&cp=12&gs_id=ah&xhr=t&q=silver+shampoo&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&biw=1133&bih=589&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=1015735712191190573&sa=X&ei=T1RCTs23OYSg8QOSlfisCQ&sqi=2&ved=0CHQQ8wIwAw http://www.hairsupermarket.com/p/2455?r=5 it was back to white or grey

Arya and bunzfan, I'm a big fan of toning :D I do it often! My latest effort was with Wella colorfresh in 8/81 silver which I left on with heat for a few hours (yes, I need some serious processing time!). It does improve the lengths, but does not completely take away the orange and it definitely doesn't lighten the lengths to silver/white (toning doesn't lift, just deposits a counteracting colour over the top). Still.....I will continue to tone :) Silver extensions are also a good idea!

Try online dance shops for the crochet ones - and I think the octopus is amazing -)

I find the look of your own hair much less disruptive than any of the bun covers.

The different colors in your braid are especially pretty.

I love the idea about silver extensions.

I found this on etsy:

and loved this one immediately:

Agree. Your silvers and golds don't need any kind of covering, they look lovely together!

Oh, and who of you went and bought that elf leaf leather barette when I was working?! I saw, I wanted, I worked, it was gone.

Merlin: yeah that octopus is VERY cute :D
bunzfan: thanks :flowers:
spidermom: aww...you're very sweet! It's funny how us LHC people notice things like colour differences in braids :) I guess I just feel as if it's too conspicuous for me sometimes. Not all the time, just sometimes. I feel like I want to cover up the gold bits some days. I can pretend that I'm closer than I actually am to a full head of silver :o
