Hi all,
I have been looking for some new bun style but they are seem to be for totally beautiful really super duper long hair (so jealous- if I pull my hair will it grow faster:p...maybe not) anyway my hair is just shy of APL with layers, some from and trim 5 months ago some from breakage (when I was not a member of LHC) anyway my longest layers are just shy of APL but my shortest layers are about 5"-6" around my hairline and on my crown, where the worst damage (bleach ) was. Any suggestions for styles would be awesome! Also could I use bamboo DP knitting needles as hair sticks? Just a thought :). Thank you!

I have no suggestions to offer unfortunately because I've been asking myself the same question!

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread ;)

I know sometimes those of us with (what I think of) as "in between lengths" have a hard time finding styles that work....anyone with a suggestion????

I've just past APL...I find that a little lenght can help you make buns you couldn't earlier. When I had hair shorter than APL, I couldn't do a cinnamon bun. My hair is past APL now, and I have layers, my shortest being chin lenght. I will not sugar coat things, truth is, layers do not work well with updos...they tend to fall out. But I still love my layers, and I'm hopeful, that when I reach my waist lenght goal, I will still have layers, only they will be longer and they would fit into my updos. I think you could try using clips instead of sticks...The bamboo stick is OK, if it is smooth...if it isn't, you can try and file them, then just paint them with 1-2 coats of clear(or coloured) nail polish. I also recomend, that all of you, who is almost at APL try to do the cinnamon bun with a stick/pencil at least once a week...you will find that in a couple months, you will be able to do it. A french braid is also good for layers, tough tricky to keep it nice looking troughout the day. A french twist might work( I haven't tried it but I'm planning on it)...the peacock twist was my friend when my hair didn't fit in a cinnamon bun...Experiment, read, and wait...Good luck.:D

My favorite bun is the hypno-bun, which I believe I've been able to do since MBL. I didn't try it at any shorter than that, but it may be possible. Otherwise, the nautlius bun, which begins in a very similar fashion as the hypno-bun is likely possible at shorter lengths than the hypno-bun. I suggest these two in particular simply because they've held very securely for me.

Other buns that are certainly possible at APL of so are the cinnabun and the chinese bun, though the latter would likely require pins to stay in place.

What is your hair thickness? It is a determining factor in the types of buns you can do at certain lengths too. I couldn't do anything with my hair at APL. If we have more information, we could give better suggestions

This is so true i couldn't do a proper lazy wrap bun or Cinnamon bun until i was near to mid back just due to my thickness to find out how thick your hair is you measure your ponytail round the band.

My ponytail circ. is about 2"-2 1/4" around, I *think* I have fairly fine-normal hair.

Oh ok you may be able to do most bun's sooner than me:D mine is just over 3 inches and i can only do a few plain buns but plenty of braided ones.

I mentioned the split bun which is shown here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppzJDJ9RNmod i did that at your length and i had layers to

I'm not yet to APL and my go to at the moment is twisted like a cinnabun (although it wouldn't stay with less than a million pins in a traditional fashion) and I take two small claw clips and do one on each side - making sure that I get the bulk of the end in one of them. I anchor each securely into both bun and scalp hair.

It stays like a charm. I do have sprigs popping out places (I too have layers) but it makes for sort of a messy updo that works for me. It can also work with a larger clip on just one side.

It looks kinda like this (although forgive me because I just snapped this and it's one I did in the car while driving about 4 hours ago. LOL)

**and the funny hanging down bits on each side are my bangs tucked behind my ears - lol sorry!**

I also like the split bun - that looks really cute and is fun for just one stick although I can't do it without an elastic. I'm currently trying to stay away from elastics, which is why I don't do it often. But it's definitely one I like

The sock bun does pretty well also (I think I have a pic in my album?) If you do Loepsie's, it can be a nice big, fat bun -depending on your hair. It just takes a bit more work - and the right sock. :D

Try a chopstick bun, French twist, half-up, sock bun--but as others have said, a lot depends on the thickness of your hair. The thicker it is, the longer it needs to be. I couldn't do a pencil bun until I was at BSL, and just recently started being able to do a decent lazy wrap (I'm just shy of waist). You can go into the Articles section and check out all the bun info there, and also go on YouTube and search for "buns for APL length" or "buns for shorter hair." Good luck! :)

Thank you all for such great suggestions! I am so happy when I get to be a little more creative with my hair. But I must buy hairsticks I tried the split bun which worked quite nicely but my hair is currently being held in place with a US size 9 DPN knitting needle :D...I need hairsticks. Thank you again!
