View Full Version : How to get my hair like this?

Hey, I am new to this site.

I have curly hair, which is a lot like Andrew Stockdale's and Brian May's, but it generally grows outwards. I wish for it to be more like Vinnie Moore's/Brian Mays (photo's attached), which is curly and has the same thickness as mine but grows downwards. How would I go about achieving this? Thanks.

Hi and welcome!

First off- Your photos show up! :)

Second, how you achieve such styles depends a lot on how your hair looks like now. Also, I'm no expert on 80's hairstyles, but my guess is that it requires lots and lots of abuse of the hair, such as back-combing and spray. Youtube has some tutorials for 80's hairstyles, maybe you could do a search there? :)

It looks like a mullet shaped cut that was brushed out and back combed and probably involved lots of hair spray.

When I brush my curls when my hair is dry, I get a similar look, but I doubt the height would be attainable without a lot of abuse.

I'm pretty sure you're looking at perms there. They'd had long hair, probably hung straight, had it permed, trimmed, back-combed, teased - pretty much the full nuclear destruction of hair care - and were ready for their close-ups!

They also had people to do it for them, which you might have, too, for all I know, when they were having pics and concerts. You don't usually see them fresh out of the shower or falling out of bed in the morning, what their hair really looks like when left to its own devices.

It stands to reason, if you grew your hair long enough it is going to eventually hang down, regardless the amount of curl. So maybe all you really need to do is keep growing it long. And, because you're here which gives the impression you want to have it in the best shape possible, forgo all the nuclear hair destruction and take care of it.

That way, when it gets to the length and hangs the way you want, it will be healthy and happy, too. Something those '80's musicians couldn't claim, I fear!

Welcome to LHC!

Iv'e had this do.
You gotta let it grow out a bit so the length weighs it downward. They are just combed out curls. The layers look like they involve the top only - above the ears is grown out - so not exactly a mullet.

That's no perm.

I have seen a few amateur shot photos of Vinnie Moore not in concert and his hair is thick and curly (in the 80s) like the photos, although not quite as symmetrical/perfected etc. I guess I will just keep growing it until it falls down. Thanks for the comments.

I agree that more length will help. In the short term, if your hair is long enough to go in a ponytail or (even better) a braid, sleeping with my hair tied back has always calmed it down a bit, and would tend to help it hang down rather than poofing horizontally.
