I tried and tried and tried, and honey just couldn't life enough to blend my pale brown roots into my dirty blonde (dyed) hair...so I broke down and died it yesterday. Instead of my usual Wella permanent color + 20 developer, I used a new line I found called Satin Hair color and 10 developer. Satin is supposed to be less than 1% ammonia and based on aloe vera.
I'm happy to report that there was very very minimal chemical smell, and my hair lifted gently but enough to blend, so I'm happy. I do read that the developer and dye have -cones in them, and I'm okay with that for the 5 or so treatments I may do in a year (no cones in the rest of my life). Is this actually better than a box dye? Do you have any suggestions on how to achieve better lift with honey or other tips?
