Is anyone familiar with zipper braiding? I tried a zipper braid for the first time on my hair tonight but it was pretty tough to pull off. Usually I use the zipper weave pattern for necklaces and other crafts but it looks pretty neat and seems to hold a little better than a herringbone except that you have to start over a few times before you get to the bottom. If anyone has tried it on their hair, do you have any tips for me?

Is this different than a herringbone braid? It looks nice.

Thanks! The green one looks like a zipper but the other one looks like a herringbone.

And yeah, with the zipper braid you have the same four strands but with the herringbone you rotate strands in and out. When you do necklaces and such, you have two strings that are much longer than the other two so it looks better. With hair, since you generally can't do that, you could do it in sections or just do a section and have hair hand loose. I just realized last night that there might not be a tutorial on this one yet...If I don't find one, perhaps I'll make one once I get a little better at doing it on my own hair!

Edit: Although, you could do this with ribbons and it would look really awesome!

Sorry I don't have any suggestions for you, but that green braid is super awesome.

Awesome! That's very helpful! She braids differently than how I learned and I really like her technique. Thanks!

Wow - what a lot of work!

It's actually fairly easy if you can find a way to hold it effectively. I think using ribbons to weave with would make it very pretty and super easy. Something for me to try later this week... =) One thing I like about the zipper braid is that you can use it to make your hair look a lot shorter than it actually is.

By the way, I have to say that you guys are awesome for knowing or finding out exactly what I was talking about just from the phrase "zipper braid." I <3 LHCers!

I just bought some ribbon. After I rest for a bit I will try to make an instructional video with ribbon. And it's soooo much easier doing it the 3 strand way and with ribbon instead of just with hair.

I just finished making a video of how to do 3 and 4 strand zipper braids with ribbon. You can view that by clicking here (http://youtu.be/fdOWmtWRA40).

That's actually very cool with the ribbons.

Might have to try it, though it would be a pain to get the ribbons evenly spaced.

Does the finished braid feel quite stiff with the ribbons? It looks it.

Hmm... I like it a lot! Thanks for the video, I'd have never figured how to do the 4-strand one, even if it's quite simple now that I know how.

This looks like a great style to keep your hair contained and protected, and bunned it probably would look stunning too!

It wasn't. I know it looked that way but I was surprised that it was still pretty soft and flexible. Granted, I was lazy about spacing for the ribbons and used thin width, soft ribbons.

After the video, I put one pigtail up in a crown with just a couple bobby pins. It was a little uncomfortable for me so I took it down but it looked awesome. I have photos that I will put in my album later this week of that.

Glad the video was worth making! =)

I absolutely adored your video! The resulting braid is really pretty, and it was funny to see the cat trying to play with the ribbon. Music was nice too!

I have to try this some time..

Wow - what a lot of work!

That's exactly what I was thinking, haha.

I am far too lazy with my hair, the fanciest style I ever do is a Nautilus bun. :D

It looks cool though, wish I had the non-laziness to attempt it!

I just tried a 3 strand one (hair only, as a pigtail) using that first video as a tutorial. It looks cool but there is lots of hair sticking out the sides.

http://instagr.am/p/MPaR-znbJX/ Any tips on how to make it look neater and get all the hair in it? Maybe doing it wet?

If you use ribbons or cloth for the outside parts, there aren't many fly-aways. Without them, I'm not really sure how to reduce them :-/

And firegypsy, I hope you did! I am so glad someone recognized the song!

Having worn this braid in the swimming pool, I can tell you all that it's probably not a great idea to wear it in the pool!

I don't think I could do that to my hair. Its pretty.

I just tried this and found two things 1) my hair hates this far less than a herringbone (for which it has to be super heavily oiled to look right and not form itself into a dreadlock) and 2) if you do it too loosely (so that there are gaps between cross overs) it makes a very cool looking uneven plait.

I think this should be hairstyle of the month sometime soon so we all get an excuse to try it. Looks pretty cool to me.
