I need to get my first pair of cheap but durable hair sticks. Anyone know a really affordable site? What are criteria for a good pair?

You don't have your location listed, but if you're in the states and have a mall near you, check out the store Icing (it's owned by the store Claire's) if you have one. They do carry some nice hair sticks and various other hair toys, I've gotten some metal hair sticks from them that have lasted a while. It might be cheaper than ordering online.

There are lots of nice sticks available, but my most durable are hollow steel chopsticks (http://www.garrettwade.com/stainless-steel-chopsticks/p/39C04.01/). the small ones are sized nicely for hairsticks, and they come in sets of 4 pairs. Of course www.etsy.com has lots of nice sticks. Wood works well, but I find bone to be more durable yet.

This is just what I was looking for. Thank you!

Sally's Beauty Supply Stores carried faux tortoiseshell sticks, which is where I got my first pair..inexpensive..just for practice, to see if I liked the hairstick idea.

My first "hairsticks" were these (http://www.mrslinskitchen.com/10370.html) from http://www.mrslinskitchen.com. I got them years ago, still have 'em, and they're in great condition. Plus, you can't beat the price. They have lots of chopstick pairs for under $1. They're long and good to learn with, plus if you damage them somehow while you're learning, big deal. They're cheap (but pretty!).

Pencils work well in a pinch. :)
