The local newspaper ran a human interest story today where a fifth-grade teacher in a nearby town had made a New Year's resolution to donate her hair to LOL, and her students liked the idea and wanted to do it too. So two ten-year-old girls and the teacher did it together, at school.
Oh how I wish that teacher had taken the opportunity to educate her students about being cautious and doing their own research rather than believing everything they hear. It would not be hard for a ten-year-old to find, heck the LOL wikipedia entry contains a section of criticisms and offers some statistics. The girls would have learned such a wonderful lesson about making informed decisions, even if the end result was still a choice to donate their hair. Sigh.

The teacher should've taught the kids to do their own research. At 10 the kids are still at the point that they believe a lot of what they hear. She should've also talked to the parents before she said anything about it to the students. Maybe the parents could've done the research with the kids at home and help the kids understand the situation a little better. I wonder what the parents thought when they found out.

Shelly that's a good point- the article did not say anything about the parents.

That does not suprise me. I think that is something the parents would want to know about. I know as a mother of 2 I would. Maybe the parents have some belief like some of the native americans do or some of the religions and don't believe in cutting hair at all. What would those parents say about it?

I don't think people usually even THINK of researching LOL. They just take it for granted as the most wonderful thing they can do. I agree, the parents should have been involved but I doubt any of them would have researched it either. If it had involved money yes people would be more apt to do it but not this. I hate it too but well it's their choice I guess.

This maybe stupid to say, but eventhough LOL isn't exactly the best idea, nor the best place to donate hair, I think if it gave the girls a feeling that they'd done something good or important then it's okay for me. :) It'll leave them with a memory of something good. (and I'm by no means a 'yay LOL' -person, just saying..)
Good to know. I'm sorry.

Actually, that sort of deception over a warm, fuzzy feeling makes me :puke:
To quote from the New York Times article (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/06/fashion/06locks.html) :
“A check would be easier for me,” Ms. Coffman said. “But would the donors get out of it what they do? No.”
It's an illogical sorta logic that blows my mind.
