View Full Version : Thyroid Hell and Hair!

Hello everyone! I'm fairly new here, and the main reason I joined was I thought I was doing something wrong with my haircare routine that caused my hair to thin out and grow very slowly.
I do have hypothyroidism (was hyper, took radio-active iodine to "cure" it, caused me to become hypo)

For the past 10 years I have been on the same dose of meds (the evil synthroid) and had no problems. Last year I started noticing my hair thinning (I can see my scalp through) on both sides of my head right above my temples. Then my thyroid symptoms got worse.

(My hair used to grow VERY fast, was very thick and healthy, and I never really did any rituals for haircare)

What I've learned and thought I'd pass along to anyone who might be in the same situation as me:

DO NOT consume FLOURIDE!!! I grew up on bottled water (my mom's a nurse) and didn't realize I was slowly harming myself when I finally got married and moved out and started drinking the tap water which our city flourinates. :(
I will now be drinking distilled water or only spring water that is guarenteed to NOT have flouride in it. (chlorine is also bad for you to ingest- "would you drink pool water", and can cause other health problems like cancer)

Next, if you think you might be hypothyroid, look up the symptoms, see if they apply to you, read the book "Hypothyroidism: the unsuspected illness" by Broda Barnes. It's old, but it will make so much sense.

My major problem now is finding a doctor who will not get stuck on the TSH test (which does NOT test thyroid function, mearly how much the pituitary gland tells the thyroid to produce), and is willing to prescrible a NATURAL thyroid replacement (Dessicated Thyroid).
I will keep you all posted on what I find and if I get any results.

I'm very angry and upset about this whole situation because "the powers that be" always said "drink water with flouride in it for healthy cavity free teeth".
I honestly think this is a scam from our government to keep us sick and dependent on meds, making the pharmacuticals rich and the government even richer...

Thanks for listening. <3

I wish you the best of luck :grouphug:

Thyroid problems have caused me severe hair loss over the years. I started with Hashimotos and eventually thyroid cancer. The radioactive iodine was hell after my total thyroidectomy. I was nauseous for weeks and lost my sense of taste for months.

I am on Armour and it is so much better than Synthroid. You may have better luck if you go see a homeopathic doctor. I wish that so many doctors would pull their heads out of their @ss and realize that TSH alone does not cut it. Talk to a few endocrinonogists in your area and ask them if they work with Armour before you even make an appointment. Also topical use of castor oil on my scalp has helped me grow my hair back a bit as well as using https://morroccomethod.com/ products. If you have any other questions please feel free to PM me and check out the hypothyroid thread in the health section.

You're welcome :flowers:

I'd also like to add that soy majorly contributed to destroying my thyroid. I was vegetarian for 4 years prior to my thyroid problems being shot to hell and ate an awful lot of soy during that time. It can also inhibit the uptake of your meds.

Another tip, if you can't get your doctor to work with you on Armour ask about Cytomel. It's a T3 only med, while Synthroid is T4 only. Armour is a combination of the two, which is why it works better. The theory is that an underactive thyroid will produce t3 on its own when given t4 but it doesnt always work that way. Especially not in my case because I don't even have a thyroid anymore. The cytomel can give you the boost of t3 you need.

Request that your doctor tests free T3, T4, and your thyroid antibodies as well as adrenal function in addition to your TSH.

Hypothyroidism runs in my family. I've had it since..always. But I always took my meds and never had any health or hair problems because of it. My dose was always fairly large. Make sure you have the right amount you need and in time all is gonna be fine. :)

I'm sorry about your thyroid experience! I have had hyperthyroid for a long time and I have found that high doses (1,ooo-1,500 mg) daily of L-Lysine have helped my thyroid function SO much! I also have started following the "Blood Type" diet and noticed an *Extreme* difference in my symptoms! I'm not sure if this would help you in any way, but I just wanted to share in case it could :D

Thanks for posting this. My Doc mentioned something about possibly having a thyroid condition. I still have to get my blood work...
