top layer of short do...how to protect it?

I've recently noticed my tops layer of hair is slightly lighter than the rest of my hair due to sun exposure & mechanical damage possibly? Is there a way to protect this section? Any suggestions would be great!

Wear a WHITE scarf or white straw hat. White deflects the heat of the sun (our US mail carriers wear white solars as they make their rounds).

Not only does the covering protect your hair, it protects your scalp, which is even more important.
