View Full Version : APL with hairsticks?

I'm attempting to find some way other than elastics to put my hair up. I recently made a pair of hairsticks that I'm rather wanting to use, but is there anything other than a cinnabun that I might be able to do with them? My hair's sort of outgrown the "cheater" bun, since I've just got way too much end left over. And I can't for the life of me manage to get a split bun to stay.
My hair's edging a little too close to BSL for all my old fallbacks to really work any more, but not quite close enough to work any of the BSL-and-longer styles.

What about a french twist or peacock twist? My hair is UBL and I can hold those with two hair sticks. I use this basic technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boGblrUa_O8

I actually think this bun is quite reliable when you just can't get any other bun to work

I'm at APL and can barely manage a messy bun. My hair is too thick. I just do half up buns so I get to play with hair toys.

I was also going to suggest this - I'm about your length and can do a peacock twit and a French twist (ends tucked under) that will hold with 2 sticks or a simple fork :)

I know some can manage it, unfortunately for me i was just past bsl before I could manage it.

Solsara's easy hairstick style (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roL-8kqQXOw) may work for you. I did this all the time when my hair was waist-lenght, I just pinned the tail down or twisted the stick around a bit more to make the ends invisible.

I was about to suggest this too (just ignore her rather annoying voice).
I'm still using the Pencil Bun at almost-waist and I prefer it to a cinnabun - I prefer the more relaxed-looking shape and it stays in my hair better, whereas cinnabuns have a tendency to uncoil for me.

Depending on your thickness, you might be able to manage a Nautilus bun. Twist it first, and don't worry about wrapping the tail. (Really, I'd link you to the 10sec quick bun, but the video's gone.)
Being i/ii rather than ii/iii really helps you here. The iii folks often can't manage much besides a sock bun or multiple buns until past BSL.

Love this one! http://frannyslonghair.blogspot.com/search/label/wrapped%20hairstick%20bun
It works on my length, and it even worked on DD10's tailbone hair. With the extra length, I just wrapped it around after twisting the hairstick. (It's her favorite too she says because it feels more stable. And I only need one hairstick!)

I love this one by laurahborealis (http://www.longhaircommunity.com/archive/member.php?u=12498). I use it nearly every day, with two hairsticks in an X for extra security. (:

Thank you! I hadn't even considered trying that one, figured I didn't have the length. But sure enough, I think it's just barely possible, or something similar to it. Whatever it is, it's been in my hair three hours now and is holding like a rock. I may fall in love with this bun. Now I just have to manage to center it, mine's well to the right on my head.
But yeah, I appreciate my thinner hair sometimes. Makes buns easy, though plain braids look rather pathetic. I've got pretty heavy bangs growing out though, so it'll get better over time.

Glad it works for you. It's still one of my go-to buns at this length, and with 2.5" of circumference, my hair's not much thicker than yours. It's a difficult bun to outgrow -- you just wrap the tail around more times.

This is something I've been able to do since APL - a fake figure 8 spawned by another failed attempt at figuring out the lazy wrap! (I'm incapable of following verbal instructions - I will misinterpret anything - and I can't watch video on my computer, so needless to say my attempts have produced some bizarre results. This one was fortuitous.)

Once again, it is NOT an actual figure 8 even though it looks like one. Here's how I do it (let's hope I'm more capable of giving instructions!):
Grab hair in ponytail in ring of right index finger and thumb, thumb below index finger. Other fingers are between index finger and head. With left hand, reach across your face, below your right hand, and grab the tail and begin to twist counterclockwise behind the ring you've made with your right index finger and thumb, like you're making a cinnabun. (Except you don't have to twist as much.) You should have a loop of hair around your thumb and you're wrapping the hair behind the loop. Allow the twisting and wrapping to rotate your thumb into a vertical position - this is where you'll be putting the hairstick.
When all your hair is wrapped behind the loop, use your right hand to hold it against your head while you get the hairstick. Your thumb should be pointing down through the loop - slowly withdraw it up and out while following it with the hairstick which should be pointing UP. When the hairstick comes through on top, rotate it 180 degrees towards your scalp, catch some scalp hair, and push it down. This pulls the loop up and exposes a lower loop that you made when you wrapped around the base. As you push the stick down, make it come out above that lower loop.
Hope that made sense. Must enlist friend to take sequential pictures, methinks.
(Does this bun exist already? I haven't seen it, but there's still a lot I have not seen.:o)

I do something like PraiseCheeses. I think the main thing when you aren't long enough for a 'real' updo is to practice until you find something that holds.
My hair gets way less kinks and tangles since I started using sticks more- it is almost at APL.
