I was out with Mr. Orca today for a nice afternoon date and I went to the book store at the mall. I have not had much luck following tutorials online on French/Dutch braiding, so I figured if a book made for little girls could not teach me then I was hopeless. Plus, this would help Mr. Orca learn to braid as well. (He is having a hard time with the basic English braid.) Looking through the child area, I found a book called "Hair" by American Girl. It looked cute, it was cheap, so I picked it up.

The book ---> http://www.amazon.com/Hair-Styling-Tricks-American-Library/dp/1584850388/ref=sr_1_31?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1310886320&sr=1-31

It has some cute hair things in it. I was also happy to see some actual hair-healthy suggestions! For example:

Eating a good diet will give you good hair and so will exercise as that will increase blood flow to your scalp and help deliver nutrients to your hair.
Don't use your nails when you shampoo your scalp.
Don't use a hairdryer. If you do use it, keep it at least 6 inches away from your hair.
What is your hair type? (thick, curly, thin, corse).
Lets girls know that cutting your hair DOES NOT make it grow faster so they wont believe that lie; along with other myths.
Also tells girls to speak up in the salon if they hate their hair cut so that the salon person can fix it (or refund I'm sure for us adults, lol)

The only thing I did not like was one comment about long hair "weighing down your hair, so try some layers to make it full around your face." I know this is not a long-hair book, so most people who get this won't care about layers and yadda yadda, but for me it is borderline offensive... does that make me obsessive? lol

I think it will be a good book to have around for others who may want more information in a simplistic way to read about hair information. There is also another book I was looking at that was made for little girls about braids and all the fun different kinds of braids that can be done and I am just so braid illiterate and nothing online has helped me, hopefully this little kids book will be able to once I take a look at it.

That looks like a well worth the money read! One reviewer groused it was really for those "with thick long hair" but I doubt that lone wolf will put many here on TLHC off?! "getting barrettes to stay put" - OK, time to go see if I can find copies here in the UK...
Yes!

How is the braiding going? I have an old kid's book about braiding and it helped me finally manage to French braid my hair. (I have yet to repeat that success, but anyway. . . ) The part of the directions that finally made it click for me was specifics about weaving strands through your fingers to keep them in the right order.
Mine is an earlier edition of this one http://www.amazon.com/Braids-Bows-Instruction-Anne-Johnson/dp/187825717X
But yeah, the first paragraphs of my book are full of non-LHC type hair care advice like over frequent washing with shampoo.
