View Full Version : messy hair and mess updos?

Anyone else prefer messy updos as opposed to super neat ones?
I kinda like my little ringlets poking out of my buns and falling out every now and again...at the moment my default is to put my hair in a messy knot like bun and i love it! or i just tye it in a pony and gather or the hair up and pin randomly till the shape looks good, it only takes me a couple of minutes... Not to severe and wayyy more flattering for my round face :) and tbh the only way my perpetually messy hair wants to co-operate!
So anyone else prefer to take a more casual approach and is this more damaging? I add a little oil/conditioner mix to the ends of my hair before bunning so they dont seem to dry out and nothing is rubbing again clothing, touching, going to get caught etc?

I love them too when I'm having a hopeless hair day! I'm not into the neat or elegant buns as well mainly because I think it ages me. How do you ladies do your messy buns? Any pics??

Messy / casual all the way! I hate pretty much anything that looks too formal, be it hair, clothes, house decor... grass...
:-)
Maybe that's why I don't like straight hair, it always looks too "proper" to me.

I love the messy updos on people with curly or really wavy hair. The loose curling tendrils are so pretty. However, straight hair like mine just looks.... well, messy.

The messy and the casual buns are my cup of tea. :) They reflect my somehow bohemian lifestyle at home better than the tight and symmetrical buns. :D I wear formal updos just when I need to look very conservative e.g. job interviews.

I love messy buns my hair is layered so I don't get very neat buns even if I'm trying.

my hair tends to look messy whether i like it or not when its up.
the underneath part of my hair, behind my ears and along the lower hairline, is much more coarse and curly than the rest. the rest of my hair is only slightly wavy, but behind my ears i have ringlets that refuse to be contained. i COULD use clips, but i figure its less damaging to just let it go where it wants.
unfortunately, i LIKE the clean, smoothed back look... i'm just lazy though :/

I can't do messy updos! They never work for me! I have layers, but they don't poke out nicely, they flop out. The uneven tension/weight of a messy updo also won't hold my hair up, if it's messy, it all falls out. :(

If I'm just hanging out or whatever, than messy all the way! :) If I'm at work, neat, sleek and tidy all the way.

Messy is the only way I can do my updos.
Me too! And I prefer them that way anyway, unless it's a french twist. Which is actually my new favorite hairstyle, since I can tuck the curly ends underneath, and it looks soooo elegant!!! And I only know how to do it thanks to LHC! :cheese:

My face is totally round, so I feel a bit of a pumpkin-head when my hair's scraped back and neat. A few messy bits left around my face looks alot better imo!

I like both, messy or not. :) I think if you don't let the ends get dry (which you don't), it won't be a problem. Beware of sun lightening the tips, if you don't want that, you shouldn't expose them all the time.
My hair doesn't tangle in an updo, messy or neat, only when down. I wear updos to avoid tangles, so either way works for me. :)
To achieve a messy bun, I would just make the regular bun and pull some strands out/loosen it overall. Pinning in place with a ponytail base works better for me though. It doesn't have to be just hair pins, you can make a ponytail loop and use hairsticks randomly.

I love elegantly messy buns with little spikes poking out, loose ponytails, etc., as long as they still look stable. Sadly, my hair won't make them :( Instead of a nice soft puffy messy bun, it collapses into a little hard knot. Usually I just give up and go for a sleek updo with a braid or something near my hairline for a bit of softening, and if I'm lucky enough little bits will fall out of the updo and soften it somewhat, too.

I love messy casual hair in general. I'm a huge fan of that sexy bohemian Bardot look even though it has been done to death (badly at times too lol).

I like the wispy lose bits that fall out too .. my face looks too hard with a "neat" do, I do envy those that can pull it off tho

I do messy buns at home on the weekend all the time. Not so much for work or the week though. I prefer a more polished look for my style.
The key to a protective messy bun is to make sure it isn't actually a whole bunch of tangles! As long as you carefully arrange it in that style it's fine. The problem comes when girls just throw shove their hair up in a hurry while it is not tangle free and shove an elastic around it tightly to hold it.

My preferred style right now is a loose high slightly messy cinnabun. The ends are fully tucked in but it still has texture. The effect is that it looks rather elegantly piled atop my head without being at all severe or fussy. It is certainly more youthful and casual this way--more like a dancer than a school marm. I find the looser buns give a softer look that is more flattering to my face. Higher buns are also more flattering on me--I've noticed I look best when you can see some of my bunned hair from the front.

I love messy buns but for some reason I have quite a time trying to achieve them. Any hints are appreciated!

I will say my loose/messy buns hold best with a long two-prong fork. Part of the reason this has only now become my preferred style is that I just now obtained a two prong fork which will actually hold it securely. As far as how you construct the bun, I start with hair that is still somewhat tangly, disheveled, or kind of piecey (it helps if it's at least a little wavy)--this is where the texture comes from. Then without smoothing or combing it at all, I do any of my usual buns, just much looser and intentionally a little carelessly. It might take a couple tries to get one that looks "careless" in a flattering way. Hope this helps.

This, pretty much. I am totally in love with messy updos and wear them whenever I can, but for work, it's gotta be neat and out of the way.

I don't like to say "messy", but I do like softer, looser styles. However, I personally cannot accomplish a "messy" style (unless you count what I wake up with :eyebrows:), and it sets my teeth on edge to see girls in school put their hair up by bending forward, piling all of their hair together and going at it with a hair band. With half the hair secure and the rest falling out, and without any actual semblence of a style, it just looks like a hot mess to me .

OMGS!!! I figured out a method for an evenly weighted messy bun! OMGZ! You have no idea...this has been like 16 years of inability to make a messy bun...I'm so excited!!

I like to have a nice UPDO- braid, bun, whatever, without any strand sticking out. But I cannot stand a bald look so I always have my bangs loosely pinned somewhere and I need a few strands to frame my face ;)

I love messy buns and messy ponys but it's hard for me to make them look messy AND have them stay in place for more than 1/2 hour. I have slippery hair I think. It works its way out of pins & hairsticks in no time. I usually have better luck with elactics and scrunchies.
If I'm in a hurry, I tend to put it up in a sleek-looking super-neat bun (because I can do it easy, and I know I can make it stay) or braids, which also end up looking really sleek.
I'm thinking about looking for a hair product that gives my hair a little extra texture (with out being sticky, or drying crunchy on my hair) I know it's a tall order. I might start by trying out those "beach-hair" sprays, but I recall some of them might have salt in them.

Thanks C.H. I have the two prong fork. The idea of leaving my hair somewhat uncombed might be the answer.

I love super neat. But 3 inches or so of layers and the general bad attitude of the naughty mess prevent that from ever happening. So my hair is normally a neat nice updo for maybe five minutes and then a wild mess after that.

I don't like messy buns on myself, but that's all I get with my layers

I can't seem to contain it even with pins. The loose strands just slowly unravel and spit the pins out. And since my hair hates damp bunning, I just have to live with buns like this until my layers grow out.
In the meantime, that explains the obvious lack of updo pictures in my albums. Only 1 out of 328472 buns is decent enough to be photographed. The rest make me want to die of embarrassment especially next to LHC picture-perfect updos.

I thought all of those sprays had salt in them, because the salty sea water is the point of "beach hair"...

This is 'do is fairly neat by my standards, but it seems to be messy by LHC's super-fancy-buns standards!

That kind of bun is what I get with my very-textured-haven't-washed-in-3-days hair. In the back of my hair is a barrette from when I was younger that my mom tied pink curling ribbon to. I really liked to back there, but my boyfriend thought it was weird/silly.

I can only tell from do to do what I like on other people. My own hair is too short for proper updos. I can french braid or cornrow it, that's it. Knowing my hair, though, I probably won't be able to do a neat updo for the life of me when I get the length; it just doesn't do neat.

I heart messy buns. :inlove: I also love peacock twists with different length hairs hanging down, kind of (if that makes sense). I know that's not an option for many people with long hair, but it's one of my go-to styles as I'm kind of a shortie.
Love love love me a little mess.

I like messy. I don't really have any other options, as I would have to use tons of products and spend lots of time to get anything looking sleek and smooth. I have to have a little texture or body on updos anyway; my face looks gross with my hair pulled straight back. :(
Sundial, this made me laugh :)

Here's the only messy bun I know how to do so far ... it started out like a ponytail, with a scrunchie, not pulling the final loop completely through. Then I spread the loop with my fingers and put a hairstick through it. I also pinned some pieces with bobby pins to cover up what was visible of the scrunchie.

I used to love messy buns ! I still do, but can't pull them off anymore because they don't distribute weight evenly - either they fell appart pretty fast, or they're atrocely uncomfortable to wear. I need to find a way to do a fake messy bun ... all neat and well balanced underneath, then all messy-looking on the outside. Will have to work seriously on that, I'll post pics if i ever succeed.

I can't really do too many messy things because of my hair...it's fine, straight and very long. But I do like the look. It was much easier to do messy buns and such when i had shorter hair...

Yes that is a problem I have with my straight hair. I would love a tousled casual look especially when I put my hair up.
Can you achieve a tousled look with the help of some bun/braid waves?
