My DBF doesn't especially like clutter and I had a spare toolbox (I buy them from Lowe's for my classroom and for art materials) so I decided to put together a LHC-oriented hair kit. I gathered up all of my specialty hair care items and put them in the kit.

So, without any further ado, let me take you on a guided tour through my kit.

This is a photo of my kit and all its items.

Trader Joe's honey and aloe gel...for SMTs and whatnot.

Obviously, we have coconut oil, powdered panthenol, and powdered MSM.

This is a pound of cocoa butter.

These are packets of honey that I've saved from fast food places.

I keep my tiny funnels in my kit. They're good for filling bottles.

This is my henna backstock--two boxes of Jamila and a block of Caca Rouge.

Of course, what would a LHC kit be without some cooter cream??:p

These are my hair scissors that I picked up awhile back on ebay.

We have here glycerine, some color depositing shampoo, and a spare satin sleep bonnet.

These are various essential oils and hair oils. I *heart* my Chrome Dome oil!!

I hope you get some inspiration to do your own kit. It wasn't that difficult. I like having everything I need in one place.

Cool kit. How do you mix your powdered panthenol and msm?

Cool kit. How do you mix your powdered panthenol and msm?

I use them in my henna mixes or throw them in my SMTs. They're also good to mix in homemade hair misters.

Thanks! The sticker was something I picked up awhile back. The whole thing says "Gimme that ol' time religion."

Here's a link to a similar toolbox. I actually use this exact model to store my makeup. Again, I like having everything in one handy place.

When I bought the boxes that I use for my hair stuff, it was part of a set, kind of like a set of nesting dolls. There was a big one, a medium one, and a small one. Most of the plastic boxes are around $20.

I have several two toolboxes similar to yours, as well as some other similar kinds of storage boxes - I have a picture of one of them here - this one has four drawers and a larger compartment on top. Very practical!

Very nice !
My only suggestion is to make sure the honey packets are pure honey. The majority of them from restaurants aren't real honey at all. I was rather disturbed to see what was in my "honey".

Those boxes are inspiring. I am now contemplating some of the quite useful tackle boxes my husband lingers over in the shops.

My mom got me a new toolbox and tools for my birthday. She even decorated the toolbox. :) I ended up putting my tools in my older, larger toolbox. Sadly the new and REALLY CUTE toolbox lays empty. I love the idea of using it for hair beautifying stuffs. Will post pics once i get mine set up.

What a brilliant idea! :D My parents and OH are always complaining about my hair stuff being 'everywhere' so I may have to adopt this idea! :)

Lovely! You have nice products and I love the idea to use a toolbox...
:hmm: I think I need to buy more stuff for my hair to be able to fill a toolbox...

I will definitely inspect those honey packets. Did any Trader Joe's fans notice the round canisters? The tea there used to come in these round canisters and when I was a student teacher I started stockpiling them. I use them in my room for math games and for the kids to store their scissors, pencils, etc.

I'm glad so many people liked my idea. I enjoyed putting it together and now that everything is in one space I don't have to dig through clutter to find it.

P.S.
What a nice treat to find that this turned into a multi-page thread. I was afraid it might fade into oblivion.

This is a cute idea! I have a drawer in my desk for my headbands, clips, hair pins, etc (shows how much work I get done, haha) but everything else is scattered around my room/the bathroom. I need to get an organizer for my stuff!

ARGH! :brains: I checked the ingredients list on the honey packets! They contained high fructose corn syrup and various preservatives. Why does HONEY need HFCS?? Isn't it sweet enough as it is?? :justy:

I thought they would be kinda neat because then, when you're traveling, you could do a little SMT in the privacy of your hotel room. Travel size bottles of aloe gel are pretty easy to find.

Thanks for suggesting I check the ingredients, UltraBella.

However, this begs the question: is corn syrup a humectant like honey? :ponder:

Thanks for the tour of your hair travel kit! It was inspiring for me to organize my growing stash of hair treats and goodies. I think the honey packets from restaurants are usually not honey at all. It's just corn syrup with flavor and color added. It was more of a watery consistency than honey has. I learned that honey has no shelf life! I read that some honey was found recently in an Egyptian tomb that was seriously probably still edible. I guess because it's a humectant with natural antibacterial properties?! That's pretty cool!

The tour of your kit was fun! Thanks!

I think so, too. I was just in Walgreens looking at what they had as far as accessory boxes and bags. I've got a growing collection of potions, tools, and accessories scattered in several different locations, and I really want to consolidate it all into one box well-organized box. Nothing at Walgreens seemed quite right--not mention more than I wanted to spend.

Seriously...try Home Depot or Lowes and look at the toolboxes. They aren't exactly pretty to look at (but you can decorate them with stickers) but they'll have tons of room and they're surprisingly inexpensive.

What a great idea. I'm going to have to go pick up a tool box since currently my hair stuff is everywhere I can fit it. I have limited space so I think this would really help!!

This is a great idea- my hair stuff tends to get scattered all over my bedroom and gets hard to find, so I may be borrowing this idea if I can find a decent-sized box.

I plan to. I've noticed the specialized little make-up accessory boxes don't have nearly the space toolboxes have. I have a set of 3-inch magnetic rollers I'd want to keep in there so it needs to be spacious.

However, I won't be keeping my toys in any kind of box. I've decided they need to be on display, otherwise I will probably get into a habit of regularly using just a couple and forgetting about the others. I have a lot of bookshelves in my room and what I've done is push the books back on the shelves closest to my mirror and lay out all my toys on the few inches of space in front of the books. It's a good solution, I think.

Love your kit!
Currently I just have broad toothed plastic detangling combs dotted around the house, car, workbag etc, but then I haven't quite twigged hairtoys yet... Still need to sort a toes-friendly bottle rack for the conditioners. Maybe I could start with a small compartment box for the metal free elastics & bobby pins, and yet leave space for the hair combs to come? Bah! Time to see what the supermarket has before retreating to the hardware store for something more expensive but more adaptable & more robust. That can accomodate everything from honey to hair elastics to the ficcare I'm going to treat myself to when I get to waist...

I should get something like that. Right now my things are sort of....everywhere. I do have my "henna kit" (henna, gloves, application bottles, heat caps, etc.) in one place, but it is a bulk Quaker Oats box from Sam's Club (how unromantic!). My hair styx, Amish hair pins, and elastics are in a small plastic case in my top drawer. My oils are either in a basket on top of my dresser, or in the kitchen (if I forget to bring them upstairs after cookin' up a batch of something for the hair, which I did last week). And then there are all the combs and brushes on top my dresser as well.

I also want to get a hanging shower bag for the health club so I can bring my current favorite shampoo and conditioner with.

I am very unorganized. :blushing:

I'm amazed at how affordable these are! I'm looking forward to checking out what my local hardware store has in stock. I was going to put off making any more hair-related purchases, but at this price, there's really no point.

I always get confused as to where I should store my hair products? A cabinet in the bathroom or a cabinet in the kitchen??????

And If I keep it all in the bathroom should I get another blender to keep in my upstairs bathroom? Then I dont have to do 1/2 my stuff downstairs then bring it up and finish it upstairs???

Damn need a mini microwave also perhaps . . .still have to heat my honey a bit.

Anyways my hubby accompanied me to the grocerystore yesterday and I stopped at the olive oil area because I needed a bottle, my husband said "We dont need that, for some reason I dont know theres a bottle in the bathroom on the counter?!?!?!?"

I had to put it back . . .I havnt came out of the closet yet and wasnt about to in the middle of the baking isle, "Honey that is the olive oil for my hair, what I need is new kitchen olive oil"
