I thought about creating a thread with before/after pictures and success stories along the quest for long healthy hair.
Share yours!

Wow. Just...wow. That is truly amazing growth and shine and everything in general you have there.

I'm not really much of a success story (my hair is BSL, but only because I've been too lazy to cut it for quite a while: until I actually measued when I joined this site, I thought it was shoulder length!), but I'm looking forward to seeing these pics.

Thank you! I'd like to see your success stories too!
I haven't trimmed it since November 2007 and am currently not thinking of trimming until my hair needs it (next november maybe). I do the occasional S&D to remove splits. Before that, I went to get a trim every 3 to 6 months. I also got rid of layers, finally!!

mommy, do you have any specific question?

(warning: large photos ahead)

This is what my hair looked like during most of my early years:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v479/othergirl4christ/Hair/post-haircut.jpg

My mom had no idea how to care for curly hair. To a straightie, having nice hair is equivalent to having well-brushed hair.

In addition to this, my dad insisted on long hair on all his girls. This gave me the distinct privilege of having long, messy, thick, curly, tangled red hair for about sixteen years straight.

My solution was to grow it long enough to chop off and then donate that to Locks of Love. I did that three times for a total of about 36" of hair.

Finally, about 4 years ago a friend introduced me to the book "Curly Girl." That opened my eyes to the idea that I had to care for my curly hair differently than my mom and friends cared for their hair. I went from what you see above to the below picture in about a week.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v479/othergirl4christ/Hair/100_1304small.jpg

I always knew my hair was curly, but not that nicely curly! And I'd always had long hair, so I started taking good care of it and growing it long again.

:thud: to both of you!!!

Sam-I-Am my hair is almost the exact same in the wurls/curls as yours as it's getting longer. It even clumps in the same way and looks about the same thickness! Do you love the way your hair looks the longer it gets? I am finding I do. I am going to be watching so I can tell what mine will look like at future lengths hopefully!!! The Curly girl book was what changed it for me too, my whole outlook on my hair! Along with you guys here of course! Can I ask your routine?

Oh and I'll come back and post my changes when I get new curly pic. The one in my avi is sort of out of date.

I don't have any pictures - actually, I very rarely take hair pictures, now that I think about it - but my hair grew from shoulder length to below waist between early 2005 to late 2007. Not sure if that's average or fast or what, but it seems healthy.

Soleluna and Sam-I-Am, I am in awe - congratulations on your beautiful hair!

My success story is not illustrated, but the recent compliments I got from friends who haven't seen me since I stopped brushing my hair made me realize how much my hair has improved. They were surprised to see my curls, and kept telling me how they loved my hair "au naturale"! :cheese:They remembered how I used to brush my hair (we lived together in the same student residence, and I guess that sound was something to remember... :shudder:). So I think I'll just stay curly. Even though it does eat up a lot of length.

My father also told me two days ago that hair like mine shouldn't be kept short... All these compliments have given me a huge lift in hair-esteem! :D

wow, SUPER impressive and inspiring. How on earth did both of you get such LENGTH in such a short time?!?! :thud:

You can see my progress in my sig pic. I went from salon bleached, heavily layered (the cut that was 'in' in NYC in 2004 - didn't look so bad) in the upper left hand corner to home bleached and getting straggly, to LHC and suddenly smoother, wavier hair. Now it is 'almost BSL' as it has been for the past two years, but the thick part is just two inches above BSL.

I went from heavily damaged hair that no one believed would ever grow to mostly healthy wavy messy 'mind of its own' hair. It's not as stunning as most of you, but people don't tell me I need to cut it off anymore. :)

Oh and I'll come back and post my changes when I get new curly pic. The one in my avi is sort of out of date.

Hooray, a hair twin, and one who enjoyed Curly Girl too! Yes, I absolutely love my hair the longer it gets. It doesn't curl all the way to the crown anymore, but that is totally ok because the bottom still curls so well.

My routine, uh, keeps changing. For a while I was water-only, and my hair just loved it. It curled beautifully. But my scalp wasn't very happy suffocating under all that sebum, so I had to find something to make my scalp happy while keeping my hair saturated too. I also battle dandruff.

Things that work well: thick conditioner, protein, oils, aloe.
Things that don't work so well: cones, stretching out washings, harsh shampoos.

Now I wash twice a week like this:
Wet head
Lather up scalp only with generic Head & Shoulders
Rinse
Lather up scalp only with a protein-heavy Chagrin Valley shampoo bar like Honey Beer & Egg
Rinse
Lather up entire length of hair with Honey Butter Chagrin Valley shampoo bar
Let that sit
Rinse
Mix about 2 tbsp white vinegar with my shower cup full of water
Dump that over my head and length
Rinse
Condition with VO5 Passion Fruit Smoothie
Let that sit
Rinse
Wrap hair in t-shirt turbie (it's much softer than a towel and just as absorbent - it really helped cut down frizz)
Make my leave-in: lima-bean sized dollop of JASON Natural Apricot conditioner, the same sized dollop of aloe vera gel, and 2-3 drops of coconut oil. Mix that up in my hand and then stroke it through my wet hair over one shoulder. Repeat for other side.
Maybe smooth some aloe over my scalp hair if it looks like it's ready to stick straight up all day
Scrunch
Done! Finally!

Amoretti and Sam-I-Am.. wow!! Amazing!!
I love seeing the difference with pictures. is it just me or otherwise you don't notice the difference as much?

Thanks to everyone for the nice compliments.
My hair has improved tons since I started using organic products. I also started using oils, and doing henna treatments once or twice a year. I use organic laundry softener as conditioner sometimes. the full routine is in my blog, if you wish i can post it here.
I have also started to embrace my waves. I don't use a hair drier except in winter (for my neck problems) and stopped flat ironing except on special occasions (once or twice a year, maybe). I don't brush and just comb. I use a BBB sometimes, though, after deep oiling.

I've always had thick hair, but I have started taking better care of it and it shows, I guess ;)

ETA: Katze, wow, great improvement there!!

On LHC, I learned how to calm my frizzy hair. This remarkable difference is due to nearly 10 months of not using water or anything else on my hair, also known as the Sebum Only method of hair care.

Scritching, massage and preening everyday seem to be all my hair needs. I also make a greater effort to not break hair by rarely using a brush, always wearing it up and sleeping with it loose in a silk scarf in addition to using a silk pillowcase.

Wow all of you have such beautiful hair!! Frizzinator, I can't believe how beautiful your hair looks without any wash or product. I am sorry if this question sounds weird but do you notice any smell or itch from not washing & also what do you do when you go out in dust & pollution? Any special method to clean up?

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=144 This is the link to a thread describing the experiences of several LHC members who tried the No Water method. There were many variations regarding routine and most efforts were abandoned, often due to the problems you mention.

I have never experienced scalp itching or smelly hair. I have been unaffected by pollution. I brush if there is something to remove from my hair.

I would cover my head with a hat, scarf or buff if there was dust.

Thank you very much, Alenka! :blossom: I'm slightly past classic and letting it do its own thing for now. My ends are tapered because I only do micro trims every 2-3 months. I might get a blunt cut trim (a real one) in a few months though.

Wow, you guys have stunning and inspirational hair, every one of you.

Here's mine, nowhere near as impressive I'm afraid, yet it shows growth nonetheless.

This was February 2006 to February 2008. Last month I cut off 3 - 4 inches in the length and also cut in bangs, which I highly regret. I hope to get my bangs grown out in one more year.

ok so this pic is from 2006.. my hair is many different colors.. some of the areas have faded to blonde.. i used to bleach my hair often to dye it with manic panic.. if you look closely you can see the blue/green and the fire engine red fading out..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/kidmol/mecampblurface.jpg
here is me a week or 2 before joining in august.. i couldnt even get a good pony tail.. i had to wear pigtails.

here is a clickable thumbnail of my most recent length shot.. ignore the fly aways it was windy.. for some reason the underside of my hair grows faster than the canopy.. which is annoying because i had just about finished cutting off my layers..

Well, my hair wasn't that much shorter than it is now, when I joined LHC, but I do have a photo of me from 2004, with the shortest my hair has been since I was ... 6, I think. It's from my school ID from that year, which hopefully excuses the 'drivers licence' look (read: hideousness) it has... My friends and I joked that I had 'phantom hair' in that photo...

Sometime in 2005: Here I am growing out a very short haircut (about 2 months into growing it out and bad lighting):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v203/DarkBeauty27/start20051.jpg

Then, after growing out to a little more than shoulder length, I kept it around that length for awhile. I finally decided to grow it out about a year ago. Didn't really start *actually doing it* until maybe last fall. :D

Overall Progress Pic- The one most true to current color is the bottom row center, and far right. You can see the nasty burgundy color I had when I first came here (shortly after finding henna). Burgendy is not nasty, but it is nasty on ME.

First LHC pic (pops)
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f80/SaliceMalkin/th_Hair3-6-06AfterTrimSmall-colorcorre.jpg (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f80/SaliceMalkin/Hair3-6-06AfterTrimSmall-colorcorre.jpg)

My biggest accomplishment isn't getting the length back, it's doing it while growing out and trimming off the damage.

Here's one illustrating the evolution of my color, next stop growing it all out again with my current cassia/henna blend (of which I have about 4-6 inches of at the scalp.

Aw thanks Nightshade. I am still kicking myself over my trim and bangs cut. Never again. I have gained back 2 of the 4 inches I trimmed but still have layers to contend with. I won't even go into the bangs...

Oh, my-my! Thank you so very much manderly, jojo, ajoifulnoise, katiana, dontcallmejessi, and Tessa! I just wonder what I was thinking when I look at that picture from 3 years ago. I LOVED my hair that way, and took many photos that day to get one that really showed it at it best, and now all I see is a tiny little face peeking out from hair that's had its natural waves blow-fried and steamed out of it, and its natural silvers hidden away under layers and layers of dye. I never could have made that transformation without the wonderful encouragement I get here from my LHC buddies.

Cinnamon Hair, thank you for posting this! My hair is only around waist length, but I haven't trimmed in about 9 months and I'm starting to notice fairytaling and thin ends. Polyhex, when I saw your pictures I thought I was looking at the back of my inspirational friend, Beth. You two could be hair twins. Simply gorgeous.

Wavestogrow, just...wow. I love your hair!

holy maroli there is some awesome photos here, I am hesitant to post mine!

Fell off the wagon for awhile, had a couple of cuts here & there-but benign negligence worked wonders for me getting back to where I need to get serious again if Im going to get to waist.

Haven't been here for awhile, but I'm ready to get back to growing

These pics are about a year apart

Wavestogrow, your hair has gotten so very long since I last saw it! Very impressive and absolutely beautiful! :happydance:

Sorry, I just saw this. Thank you so much Siava and Arctic! :D
Arctic you know that I love your shiny, strong red hair! Your hair has probably grown tons since we've last seen it, you should post your pic too.
Siava, I just saw your pictures in your album, impressive curls! Your hair will be at great lengths before you know it.

This thread is amazing, I can't even begin to mention everyone. I see so much beauty unfolding - the hair seems like some suppressed inner beauty bursting forth (and you all looked well enough to begin with). I'm really moved by this thread. I'll have to find a picture of my hair before.

After 1 year. I grew my hair this long at one other point in my life, but ended up cutting it all off for a girl.

Misshair-
How in the world did you grow your hair so long and fast. You don't even look like you have any split ends & your ends are as thick as the rest of your hair which is beautiful by the way. :-) Do you ever trim it ? If so, how often & how much do you take off each time? Do you use any type of oil ( like coconut or jojoba )? If you don't mind me asking, what was / is your hair routine to get to this length? Thanks so much for your time.

Whats S&D? You have gorgeous hair!!! What do you use in your hair to keep the frizzies away?

S&D stands for "search and destroy". It involves looking through the hair for individual spits and cutting them off just above the start of the split. This is done because for many splits don't occur only at the hemline so aren't trimmed off. This way you remove the splits and keep the length. Many people with fairytale ends (instead of blunt cut ends) do this.

As to the frizzies, depends on the person. Some let sebum do it's natural work, others use aloe gel or similar things. I use oil or shea butter. It's rarely possible to be completely without frizz, especially in certain climates, so developing some tolerance for it helps.

Yup, 7 inches of growth in 1 year. :)

I don't have any secrets really, I don't do anything to it aside from being as gentle as I can on it. And thank you for the nice compliments, I never plan to cut my hair for anyone ever again....in fact, I don't plan on cutting my hair ever again (maybe a trim soon, but that's it).

there's some great improvements here! well done everybody :D

Here's my hair from august 2006 it's above BSL I have a very long torso so growing takes aaaages, Here it was being blowfried and straigtened and I wondered why it wasn't growing lol -

And here it is in June 2008 it's also my sig pic but it's my best one :D -

Here's another angle, I think it's mid back/waist it looks shorter in the 2nd picture, but it's a bit longer now! :cheese:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff22/dolly_goth/DSC00416.jpg

It's definately shinier, and that's without straigteners, and just using oils to smooth it :D

The early stages when growing out from short are the toughest (if you're anything like me, you expect it to be long overnight, LOL!) but then it gets so much easier. It's also really fun to be able to see the growth from day 1. Now my hair is longer, it's much harder to monitor its progress.

 Thank you! But the hair...awww come on seriously :D:D That was pre-LHC days, and emergency hair to boot. hahaha we'd planned on me having Dutch braids. Hubby made my circlet with room for my hair to be braided, but didn't think to make it large enough for the inside metal work/reinforcements...so we lost the room for my braids. I had to have as compact hair as possible so I washed it and blow dried it straight :D

Such beautiful pictures on this thread! And I have nothing much to show. But I do have a success story :) :

I joined this forum on November 4th, 2007. My hair was just growing out from being chemically abused for 10 years! I did my last chemical hair dye in september 2007. So I got a year of hair without chemicals (only henna) and in that year the dyed part grew out quite a bit. The (black) hair dye has completely faded, so finally it's not visible anymore. I think that's a success for me :). In January this year I lost a lot of hair, but that has grown back quite good, another success. The only thing is, I don't have pictures from that time. I didn't want a picture of that mess ;). So no before and after pictures
