I don't really have enough hair to do a proper one. But I am trying it today. Using my new spin pins. It's up there nice and secure. Great for my planned afternoon of gardening.

I wanted to try this one but I don't care for how my hair looks in most buns because I don't have the length to give it the fullness I like. Once I reach waist perhaps I shall give this one a try. Ya'll all did such a lovely job!!

Ooh, I like this bun! This will have to be added to my repertoire. Now if I can just find another place that has Goody spin pins...I bought one box and I haven't been able to find them since.

Hah, I just tried this. Let's just say it wasn't a huge success, and I'm not about to post pictures :p

I've never been able to get the hang of the cinnabun. It just turns into an extreme beebutt bun, no matter what tricks I try to get it to lie flat. But I really like how this bun looks, so I will have to try a few more times :)

Have you tried to pin the bun as you go along? It is easier to get it flat and properly "spiraly" then. :)

Haha, that was a disaster! :D I've never done a cinnamon bun before, so that might be part of the problem, and I think I wrapped the braid too tight in addition to not having it anchored in the correct place. I'll report back on this one after a couple more practice runs.

darklion
July 3rd, 2011, 11:06 PM
wow girls... the cameo buns look great!
My first attempt was more bee-butt than cinnabun,
I think I'm not used to dealing with the thinner quantity for bunning.
the braid part was pretty simple.

I will try the pinning as I go along technique.

This is a pretty short hair friendly style. I'm a pretty solid ii thickness, and I'd easily get a bun the size of my fist. Might manage a bit more, since coiling only half my ponytail should get me rather a lot more scalp coverage. Might even be doable for some folks who are lamenting having a pony-stub instead of a ponytail.

Here's mine - my first time posting a photo in the Hairstyle of the Month!

I just barely have enough length for my thickness to pull this one off:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=8115&pictureid=107022

My bun always pops out more than I would like as well, but I don't mind that so much. My braid really wasn't long enough to go all the way around, so I just tucked the end under the loose roots at my nape and pinned them around.

I have a couple more angles of this in my album.

I always have trouble with posing pics. I can never seem to get them embedded in the post. Sorry about that!

I colored the bottom layers of my hair with Manic Panic a few days ago. I did not bleach, so the color is deeper (less bright) but it is still quite clear that it has been colored.

Well, at least I tried:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=1729&pictureid=107199

Something went very, very wrong with the braid, to say the least, lol. I think it's partially that I started the braid too close to my nape, and partially that my braid tapers quite a lot. Still, I really wanted to try something new, since I only ever do cinnamon buns and English braids.

CrystalStar
July 6th, 2011, 01:22 AM
I attempted this yesterday but the thinner section for cinnabunning made it turn into more of a bee-butt bun! I liked the look of having something different to wear though, so I will attempt it again before the month is out. :p

twilight_faerie I also had the problem with the braid! I did mine right up to my nape, so you could see it joining my cinnabun!

Thank you. I think next time I will try just with pins and no scrunchie at all. And I will TRY my hardest to make my braid neater.
Anyone have any tips as how to start a braid that doesn't make one side be all loopy?

I tried this bun yesterday but it didn't come out quite right. I guess I had the "bee butt" problem.

I'll try again later this week and post pictures. Hopefully, I can figure out how to fix it. I want to blame my not-quite-APL length hair but... instead I'm just going to try it again.

I don't think this one works as well for those with thinner hair. I struggled with covering up the bottom braid part start. Here's my attempt. Please ignore the wispies. I intended to only practice it. I doubt this is one that will be come a go-to bun.

I tried this bun again and the results were mixed. From the right side, it looks like I did it well, but from the left side it looks like a regular bun. I think I need a few more inches of length to get this one to look nice and neat. But it's a great bun to have in my repertoire!

Here's the photo from the left:

I think I need a little more hair for this one - it looks big in the picture because the camera was too close, the bun is not eating my head at all. I wish
It's also not the best style for slippery-straight-freshly-washed hair. The fuzz! :thud:

Had to change the brightness a bit, this was taken at night.

I've done something very close to the one from Age of Innocence.

You make a Dutch braid and continue braiding down to the end of your hair. Take the hanging braid and wrap it around the center Dutch braid; secure.

Really makes a coooooool braid!!!

I'm going to try this cameo bun. I don't do many buns, for I'm always wearing hair combs any more, and they seem to work better for me if they're in a wrapped/longer stretched-out style. Yeah, I'm sure you can envision this real well, right?!

I'll try this one tomorrow and see if it will be worth battling Photobucket to get a pic posted!

I agree. I just tried it today (will post pics when I get the cinnabun part down). It is so easy to do, and looks extremely elegant. I really like it because my hair is so thick that it is too heavy for one bun at this length, but not quite long enough for anything fancy yet.

I love the hairstlye of the month section because it gives me so many ideas (and for the pictures, of course ;))

Oh, what a pathetic, sad, and totally awful cameo bun I wove on my head!

There's no way, with the two inches of thick hair going into the cinnamon bun part, leaving the tiny, tiny, tiny mile-long braided strand, that I have anything that will show as a braid wrapping around the cinnamon bun.

I was pretty sure this was going to be the case, but it looked so nice on everyone else - was a bun that looked like it would be easy enough even *I* could figure it out - so it's disappointing that it can't be done on me.

I'll just look at all the gorgeous ones pictured here and sob quietly into my coffee....

I think I just got lucky. After realizing I had to have some way to hold the center bun, I contemplated the tools at hand and settled on two bobby pins. After adding the braid I secured it all with my newly acquired twist pins. Loving those!:cheese:

I like the way the cameo bun looks with the braid visibly starting at the nape, but I liked et--cetera's bun with the braid coming from the front, so when the first bun became uncomfortable (I haven't worn my hair up much in the past few years, and my scalp protests the change in orientation after a few hours) I redid it with the braid in the front, but I used a wider section of the front than she did and the result was that you could hardly tell where the braid originated and I thought I recalled someone trying to obscure the braid coming from the nape so I thought I'd post as a suggestion for achieving that effect.

Yay, Cameo bun! I've always intended to try this one but never got around to it.

Having read all your comments, I made a couple of modifications. First, after dividing my hair in half I pinned the top part out of the way on my crown, and plaited the bottom half as high as I could before coiling the first part of the bun. Secondly, I foresaw that a cinnabun would be pretty skinny and snaky, due to length and lack of thickness. So I made an equilibrium bun instead.

Unfortunately, equilibrium bun + freshly washed hair = frizz, but oh well. :D

Lovely buns everybody!

I did this bun the first of July as soon as I saw this thread, but forgot to take a pic. It was so comfortable and stayed put so well that I decided to give it a go again today, but english braids were uncooperative (tried twice) so I went for a rope braid. That's just as I finished it:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=5085&pictureid=108003

And that's right now after 10 hours without pulling at all, not giving me headache, and looking decent!

I didn't quite hide the start of my braid, but managed to do a passable one with my not-quite-BSL hair, so I was pretty pleased. Actually, this is probably the most intricate style I've pulled off to date. And the braid just managed to go all the way around. It was less than half my hair (made the cinnabun bit more than half because otherwise it looked pathetic), but still made it. I'll try to photograph once I can requisition a camera from someone...

I had no idea this style had a name! It was one of my go-to styles when I had long hair as a teenager. Although today's try ended up a bit messy. I have obviously lost the knack for it in a decade of being a shorthair.

Clearly means I need to practise more, now that I'm nearing BSL again.

So this was my first attempt done with bobby pins since those are the only kind I own. I'm showing you the good side. On the other side I had a huge bald looking spot where I parted funny plus a spot where my hair is sticking up because I did this in front of the computer instead of the mirror. Next time I'll definitely have to make the braid further away from the nape, but I really like the look of it and will have to get proper pins so I can wear this out when I get it down a bit better. :)

I need to split the hair a bit more evenly for it to work properly (the braid didn't quite make it around the bun. It got maybe about 4/5ths of the way around. I call my version 'The Inquisitive Bun' as it makes a large ? around the center part. lol)

Since the image isn't showing for me, here you go.

Finally got the image thing to work.

I know I'm late, but here's mine. This is the third try, I wasn't sure I'd ever get it. All my baby hairs tend to stick out when I do any variation of a half-up... annoying. I'm excited to have finally gotten this style to look halfway decent though. :D

You can see my braid getting thinner, but I like the style. :D

Slightly off-kilter (both the bun and the picture) and a little blurry. I was having trouble getting a good shot. But I still like it.

Here's mine! I did actually take this picture in July, I just didn't get around to getting it off my camera until now. I apologize for the messiness--I wore it to dance class before I took the picture.

The braid along the side of my head is just an accent braid that I twisted into the center bun, it doesn't join the braid around the edge. It doesn't show in the picture, but the braid around the center bun doesn't wrap all the way around... my hair is not long enough :( I'll have to revisit this style once I hit waist length!

I know, I'm late!

Here is my first attempt (still not quite long enough to do this properly, I think):

Mine is only semi-successful - my braid did not want to stay properly on the perimeter of the coil - but what can you expect from newly-washed hair, anyway?

Here is my attempt:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?pictureid=110517&albumid=1268&dl=1313629861&thumb=1

The pic isn't very big. I hate doing the intermediate step of posting first to a photo site so this is the pic from my album. I guess it might not be visible to some.

ETA: second pic:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=1268&pictureid=110516 For some reason it won't post as a photo, so maybe the link will work.

Although I really like the look of it, it was more labour intensive than I would like for a bun that that "mundanes" won't notice. Maybe it's cuz my elbow is still sore, so this was harder to do than it should have been.

Does anyone have a link to a tutorial on this? None of the links or photos in this thread work for me. I know it's old but I'm working my way through all the buns in the hairstyle of the month list. :)

That's weird, I can't find one either. I know neko_kawaii is making a hairstyle directory she might have a link to one.

If it helps my super quick text based tutorial is: a cameo bun is a cinnamon bun with a braided section wrapped around the outside like the frame on a cameo pin, so you braid a section of hair where you're going to make the base of the bun, make a cinnamon bun without the braid, pin into place and then wrap the braid around the outside, tuck any extra tail, and then pin that into place.

Thank you sumidha, that helps!
Is there a trick to making the braid? How do you know where to start it or which hair to make it from?

I don't know if there's any hard fast rules about it, personally I think when I do it I use the front section of my hair, and start the braid where I'm making the base of the bun, so the 'start' of the braid is hidden by the bun. But you could also do a ponytail with an elastic, separate out a section to braid and then bun the rest if that's easier.
