This may be a stupid question but how do I know if a product contains silicone/"cones"? What are some common ingredient names to look for? TIA.

Look for ingredients that end in -cone or -ane.

The most common one I know of is dimethicone.

Also ending in -conol or -xane.

In the newbie section, there is a link somewhere to the list of all the cones so you can get familiar!

It's also worth noting that methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone aren't silicones, they're preservatives; you'll normally find them near the bottom of the ingredients list if they're there. Just to confuse you further, sorry. :o

Can I ask... At risk of sounding like a total newbie..

These 'cones', which I take it are bad for your hair...
Are they bad for everyone's hair?
What do they do to the hair? (have I missed a thread about all this?!)
Does cheap ish shampoo / conditioner without them exist?!

(I've also seem mentioned avoiding alcohol in hair products... ?? What does alcohol do to the hair? )

Thank you =)

No, cones aren't bad for everyone's hair. My hair likes them.

You'll want to read this article (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=13). :)

And yes you can get very cheap shampoo conditioner without them. Check out Superdrug. Tresemme naturals are fairly cheap and cone free.
