A girl my age always wore her hair in a bun, and one day I saw her wear it down. I was shocked to see it hung to her butt. I wasn't part of LHC at the time so I can't remember if it was classic length because I didn't know what classic length was....actually...yes, it was at classic length. She wore it very straight (and I remember it being where her thighs meet her butt), but even with braid waves it was still below tailbone. She cut back to somewhere between waist and hip, but it's still stunning. She doesn't know it, but she's my IRL hair-spiration!

And she's African American. :)

It all depends on hair type and terminal length really. I am sure you are just as able as anyone to grow your hair that long, as long as you take very good care of it and treat it like the fragile thing it is.

I think it's completely possible!! I mean, hair grows no matter what you do :p
I have heard from another woman of an Ethiopian girl with thigh or knee length natural hair, not straightened when the girl moved to the USA. I have also read of tribes in Africa who require their woman to grow their hair to really long lengths, and i am not talking about BSL, i saw one picture if i recall, it TB or so.
My friend who's african american had hair to her waist, but she cut it short. Her mother had even longer, to her bum :p Natural! No weaves or anything!
So i really believe it's possible with the right care of the natural hair :D
Happy growing!

In school i have knew an African American girl who had really looong hair, around BCL? I had asked her if she had ever cutt it and she said no which is hard to believe so i guess it's possible for you too.

I'm African American with butt length hair. It was around classic before my trim in April.

Here's how my hair looks straightened as of April/May of this year:

I don't think you can see my album yet, but I've been maintaining my hair at tailbone length (wet) for about a year now. This year I've been trimming an inch off the bottom every two months, and at the end of the year I'll either keep that trimming schedule to maintain the length, grow on to classic, or cut to hip (dry)

I am a curly 3 - when my hair was apl it was 3c, but at this length the curl is looser. Ther was another woman here a few years ago who is surely at classic if she cared to grow it that long, and her curl didn't pull out as it grew - gorgeous 3c tight curls.

and of course there's Teri LaFlesh at tightlycurly.com - her hair is quite long.

YES it is 100% possible. Race has nothing to do with it. The reason you see many African American women with short lengths is because of the hair styles many of them wear. To maintain a sleeker style, harmful things have to be done to the hair. Relaxing and flat ironing are hair killers. Natural hair(free of relaxers and heat) is able to grow the same way Asians, Caucasians and Hispanics do. Natural hair is also gorgeous and I'm so sick of African Americans being told their hair is ugly. Sick of it!

I'm assuming by African American you are referring to Americans, as well as West, Central and South Africans. Type 4 hair. North and North East Africans don't fit under that texture.

By the way, there is a Kinky 4's thread somewhere in the first few pages.

If you're on fotki check out loveya4eva's albums. Her hair was definitely past classic last time I checked, but I think she cut back to either hip/waist. You still might be able to see the pictures though. She's a texlaxed type 4 I believe.

http://www.fotki.com/redhotlala

I don't know how long this girl's 4b hair is stretched because she does not straighten much at all but judging from the sheer magnitude of hair she's got I'd say she's got some serious length hidden in there (she's the one on the left):

http://www.youtube.com/user/UrbanBushBabes#p/u/7/GWMMqGKvBDU

she's been featured on bglh twice and for good reason - her structural updos are awesome (off topic I love her style sense too - it's so different).

was also going to mention celinastarr but I see she's posted already :) Epic hair she has.

there's longhairdontcare2011 on youtube she's about tailbone now which isn't that much of a stretch from classic. I can give you several ladies who are hovering above classic but choose not to grow it that long out of preference. Their hair is still growing they just trim every month or so to maintain it at the lengths they prefer so...Yes it is possible.

If you want that CL hair then just do what you've got to do to get it.

Sera2544 on youtube has hip-length hair. She recently flat ironed it.

I know one of the people on my friend list at hairlista had hair to the backs of her knees - curly. I think she's since trimmed it to mid-thigh.

I think it's important to ask if anyone's gotten to these types of lengths while still chemically relaxing their hair. I know i didn't start seriously growing until i stopped relaxing it, and I seriously doubt I could have gotten past say BSL at the most while relaxing. When you see pictures of my hair straight, I've done it with a combination of tensioning the hair near my scalp while air-drying and then pressing it straight with heat, but these days i don't heat straighten often. I went three years without pressing it once, and I think I've done it three times since the one picture in my album from september 2010.

besides not relaxing, the most important thing I've done to grow my hair long is to wear buns.

Keepitgrowing: This probably isn't what you had in mind, but TBL dreds are amazing. I've seen more than one person on Maui with them, including a couple Caucasian ladies.

These guys are Steel Pulse, the reggae band. My DD is in the middle. Amlak (right) was so awesome with her. Met her on my prompting (crazy lady that I am, I walked up and said "Excuse me, are you in a reggae band?") He gave her such a positive message about self direction, met her friends at the stage, took her backstage (with her father). Didn't mean to hijack, but when you come across good people, you want to share it.

I'm not really a fan of free form locs on myself but I do think they're an interesting look and can look great. I think I'll stick with growing out my hair loose for now though but everytime I see this womans locs I think it may be an option for me later on. She's too adorable and has some of the best loc tutorials on youtube IMO:

wouldn't mind tbl locs that look like these.

I haven't seen classic length, probably because it's pretty rare where I am. I have seen African-Americans with hp-length hair, though. As long as you take care of it and are patient, I'm sure you can get to classic. Happy growing :)

Keepitgrowing29, classic length is one of my goals right now too! I'm hoping to reach it within a year from now. I'm your hair will grow that long with proper care. I also hope that my terminal length is classic too! :)
