View Full Version : Why do so many shampoo users lather twice?

Just starting on my shampoo bar journey. I've noticed that very many lather up twice. Are there specific reasons for this? I'm guessing that one application does not do the job?

So that you waste the bottle/bar and buy more more more! :D

To get that squeaky clean feeling?

The bottle said to. Bars for me need at least 3 lathers to get clean. I only do 1 lather unless my hair is REALLY gross.

I always thought it was to get you to use it up faster too - like the toothpaste ads that show more toothpaste than toothbrush. I've only ever needed one lather.

I do it when I use medicated shampoo, the first time is to get crud off the scalp (so that the medication has an easier time working) and the second you leave on for a few minutes to let the meds do their thing. When I am just using my beloved Chagrin Valley bar, I only lather once.

When I used a Lush shampoo bar before I went SLS free, I had to lather twice, which I've never had to do with bottled shampoo. But with the bar, the first time I washed, it just didn't want to lather. I don't know if my hair being super oily had anything to do with it or what. But when I went to lather up a second time, it worked just fine. If I ever went without that second lather, my hair didn't feel clean. But doing it twice was too drying over time. There was really no winning with it. :p

I think it's to sell more shampoo!

A hairdresser told me that the first wash was to get rid of the dirt/oil, and the second wash was to allow the shampoo to do it's good - he told me that shampoo has good stuff in it and the second wash allowed that stuff to get it and do what it needs to do. I don't believe it myself but I do find myself washing twice as well.

It smells really good :P I lather twice with SLS free shampoo. But I'm trying to prevént the squeaky clean feeling ... makes me cringe because it gives me the idea my hair can just break off

I have heard there is no need to lather twice unless your hair is really dirty. And have also heard the first lather helps loosen everything and the second lather gets it squeaky clean.

With SLS shampoo or every shampoo? Because I rarely get it with the organic rhassoul/henna/coconut stuff I use now, but I have experienced this with normal shampoo's!

I might consider lathering twice with a poo bar, because with those much of the cleansing is mechanical rather than chemical; as well, they are gentle and moisturising, so I see no harm.
With SLS poo...I've heard lots of excuses, but I think it's just to do with the modern taste for completely oil-free hair. Why this trend exists, I have no idea - surely oil-free hair is asking for frizz, dryness (surprise surprise) and breakage? But anyway, I think that's why people do it.
Given that my hair got adequately clean when I used only a pea-sized drop of SLS poo diluted in water and squirted over my scalp, I can only imagine the extra dryness and stripping caused by doing a full shampoo twice (I only ever did it once, even back in the dark ages before I found hair forums).

Most of the time i only lather once, unless i use pre oil hair treatment before shampooing

I shampoo my hair only once, no matter if I use a SLS shampoo or a sulfate free one. I think they just want to sell more shampoo.

Some shampoos don't always lather properly the first time (im not sure why). They feel watery and useless first time, but go all frothy and lathered second time. The rest are just to get you to use up the bottle faster xD

I shampoo twice, but that's only if my hair has oil in it and I want to make sure I get it all out. Aside from that, I say shampoo once, just because you don't want to get rid of all your natural oils.

I shampoo my hair twice when washing. I do this because I go so long between washes that one round do not get the job done.

My hair is still gross after one lather of shampoo. I go into the shower to get it clean, not less gross.
I also wash twice while COing, lol. At the price of my current shampoo/conditioner (0.38 and 0.35) I don't see any reason not to. :p

I only lather once. It seems to get my hair clean enough!

I'm just thinking it might be necessary when your hair's oily, gotten too oily, when you've oiled up with an oil that won't wash out as easily, when you're spreading washes, can't wash as often, ... the list probably goes on.

I lather twice with diluted shampoo, which probably amounts to one wash due to the little shampoo used!

For me, I need 2 lathers--I think it's because the first--if you've ever noticed, doesn't quite get all the stuff out. on the second lather, I get a TON more lather on very little shampoo. I figure it has to do with how you work the shampoo into your hair. Meaning, you could spend 10 minute on 1 later or 5 minutes on 2. Probably about saturation of water and shampoo and how it cleans the hair. Most bottles say 'repeat if desired'.
If I didn't repeat, it's disgusting. I made that mistake once and ewwww. The roots were still gross and oily. Had to re-wash.

I've been using a CV bar shampoo and I only lather once.

I used to lather twice but found that my hair picked up so much junk when "squeaky clean". My scalp does not seem to take kindly to being stripped down that much, so I only lather once.

I read that the first time is to get your scalp to shed its built up dirt/flakes/etc., and the second is to get it all out of your hair.
However, I only ever follow those directions with natural shampoos as my hair is fine - and normal shampoos strip so much that after a shower i'm terrified to touch it (even when dry) because its so fragile. The strands just snap.:wail:

I do it when it doesn't lather well enough the first time! Sometimes that happens, don't really know why (hair not wet enough, not enough shampoo? etc.), otherwise I just lather once..

Yes I get that a lot of well, specially how it lathers so much better the second time, while you use way less shampoo!

I agree, I always lather twice for the same reason.

I get these weird flakes on my scalp (not dandruff, it's like, oily crud on my scalp!), so I always shampoo twice. I'm sure some people don't need it, but my scalp certainly does! I try to make sure the shampoo doesn't touch my hair the second time around though :)

I always lather up twice. The first time gets rid of most of the grit and grime. The second lathering finishes the cleansing process. My scalp doesn't feel clean if I don't lather twice.

I used to lather twice to get literally squeaky clean, but I know that that's actually bad (for my hair anyway). I actually really shouldn't be using shampoo, so one lather is good enough for me.

Lather is associated with cleanliness. In reality, all that lather is stripping away any sebum produced which naturally lubricates the hair shafts.
Avoid too much lather and always apply to scalp and not length of shaft.
