I only found one thread about refined/unrefined oils, but not much was sais. Other threads are about coconut oil, but I'm specifically interested in avocado oil. My hair loves an avocado mask and also like my hairbutter with unrefined avocado oil in it. But oh my, the scent... And apparently it's hard to cover up with EOs.

Does anyone use the refined version?

Is refined really that bad? Will I lose a lot of the good stuff? Will refined oil still work like magic like an avocado does?

The problem is that now, I have read both conclusions. I read on another forum that someone used refined and it worked great. In one of those links you just gave someone said the refined version did nothing for her...

So I am still equally confused :)

There are differences in refining processes. I would start by researching brands and seeing what they say about how their avocado oil is processed and with what. Some use chemicals, while others do not. The same can be said about coconut oil and many others.

Example http://www.spectrumorganics.com/?id=6#j40.

Their expeller pressed coconut oil has been reported to work well.

ETA Example 2 Companies love to tell you how they produce their oil, http://www.olivado.com/studies4.htm.

It would be the refined oil from the Oil & Vinegar shop, but I have no idea how it is made.

edit: and hmm, now I'm doubting if that person was right, because it seems a shop to eat oils, so I would assume it is unrefined

Ask at the shop if you can. They should know about the products they sell, or from the label, contact the company and ask questions. I have done that and gotten replies. Chemically refined oils are sold for food use.

Okay, thanks :) I will ask.

Still hoping someone had experience with both and could give a comparison analysis

Another vote for food grade oil

Food grade oils are safe. Some are just more refined and can contain traces of chemicals.

You could see what food grade oils your local health food stores carry. If you do not like the oil on your hair, you can always cook with it - less waste.
