I have never worn a two bun style! But I should try it, I love the show Charmed and Phoebe likes to wear these two buns kind of high on her head - it looks adorable!! I can't find a picture but I'll post it if I do...

ETA: Found a picture! Not the best but you can see what I mean. I think they look adorable on her but I'm not sure I could pull them off....

I love double buns, up high, one on each side.

I have never worn the kind where one is up high and one is down low, one underneath the other... I bet that's comfortable.

I also like the style that comes in the mini-spin-pin box that is three small buns at the nape of the neck. That is comfy and not weighty.

Yo! I have a few shortie hair sticks just for those. My favorites are my 5" Ketylos and my 5" Quattros. I also bought two sets of the spin pin minis for just such a style. My biggest problem is getting them even. I usually start with two ponytails and work from there.

Just tried the double bun style out yesterday. I really like it! My daughter (who is 16) even complimented me on the look. I think I really liked it because it even distributes the weight of the hair.

It certainly is! Not long ago I wore two cinnabuns (1 high, 1 low) for the "A day, a Haistyle" challenge for the first time, and was amazed at how comfy they were.

I have to say that I like all kind of double buns, each placement looks different and that gives a lot of versatility: it's not the same very low two bee-butt buns than two of them very high!

ETA: And double buns leave better bun-curls for me, too!

This is my go to style. Since my hair got to about tail bone length there are just some days when double buns are the only way I can get my hair up quickly and comfortably some mornings.

My go to is double ondango on either side of my head. I'll do double cinnamons, nautilus and figure 8's as well. Up high or low, it just depends on the day. I also stack them in a row sometimes instead of on the sides of my head.

There's a picture in my album somewhere.

How do you hold them? I don't think this would work with the 7" hairsticks I usually use.....?

This thread needs photos! :)

I tried double buns about a year ago and the response I got has not encouraged me to do them again. I got a couple of laughs and then was told I looked like some sort of Anime character :( Was probably true though.

I wore them yesterday! Princess Leia style but tighter. I started with ponytails and used pins to hold them. They were comfortable & stayed put all day- even withstood grappling in a martial arts class (although they were awfully fuzzy afterwards).

I've also worn the one bun above another bun style. It was comfortable for me.

That is so sad!! That's what I worry about. A few times I've tried them out at home but then taken them down because I think I look like I'm from the 1990s or something, haha. Too bad.

Oh I don't have that much hair that I'd use 7 inch hair sticks! 6 and 5 inches work well for me. Even 4 inches work. I have some 4.5 inch usable length sticks from Morgan Reed (http://www.morganreed.net/) I picked up at a Ren Faire that I use for double buns often.

I also use Spin Pins for double buns and wave length pins and even generic claw clips. I have some plastic mini hair forks I like for them too. My favorite toys for them are a pair of four inch Quattro (http://www.etsy.com/shop/quattro) Pins and my favorite-favorite are a pair of Scunci Mini Hair Do Sticks.

To-day on "Charmed" Phoebe had double buns, oldest DD helped me with the part and now I am wearing them, she also braided them and she says I look great
with them, they feel so cool up high as it's really hot outside.

Since reading this thread, I've made double-buns twice now. :D Hubby says he likes it. I like that it's out of the way and so comfortable!

If I don't position them well, they remind me of Teddy-bear ears or Mickey Mouse ears on me, lol. So I have to be careful to make them cute without being juvenile, heehee.

I think I'll be wearing them a lot this summer!

I haven't worn my hair like that in years I think you have inspired me to. Although... I work in a mall and girls are mean in them, there is this girl across from me at T-mobile who always points at me for god knows what reason, she wears them all the time and will probably think I'm copying her. Especially since my hair color is going to be similar to hers soon, I gotta think about that. It's not like I care if I am "copying" her but I just don't want to deal with her pointing and laughing at me all day because it is annoying, not because I care what she thinks.

Once a week or so I use a double bun style of two little buns, fairly high but not all the way at the top of my head, fastened with one large hair fork pushed all the way through both. Feels fresh and cute to me without completely making me look like an anime character, which would probably not be too flattering on my 57-year-old self.

I love double buns. I was so happy when I got a hold of mini spin pins because it makes them so easy to do. My best friend and I call them Koala ears, because she went to Australia and got her picture taken at the zoo with one, and her hair was up in double buns and she matched the Koala! It was such a cute picture!!!

Thank you, elbow_chick (the pins are decorated Amish pins from Ravenslair) and Venefica. To make the buns, I just part my hair where appropriate and do a small cinnabun/BeebuttBun with each half of hair. Pin in place, and voilà! :D

Pink.Sara, those asymmetric double buns look great! :)

I wore my hair in low twisted double buns at the beginning of this month just for a change from the usual single bun. Got a couple of compliments too...mostly from kids :)

Here are a pair I wore a while back. I was cosplaying (chunli-buns on my textured hair. the buns turned out looking more like a cross between princess leia and chun-li but I was happy enough with it. Wish I'd taken a profile pic...

I love stacked double buns! So comfortable and I think they're really interesting looking. I always think my hair looks best when some of the hair is pulled high from the earline and some is in the other direction, and double buns totally accomplish that. Double half-up clips achieve a similar look. Plus it's easy to let the bottom one down and switch to a half-up. Haven't taken any pictures yet, though I've worn them a few times now. I'm basically in pain because I want Grah-toe micro minis for them so badly, I just can't afford them right now!!

I wear double buns about once a week or so. I do them side by side, but I have also tried one on top of the other - which works fabulously with Spidermom's buns.

What I've noticed is that when my hair is in a more "childish" style such as double buns, double braids, or Heidi braids, I get a whole lot of compliments on my hair. Any other style, no one ever says anything. But when I have one of these styles, people randomly stop me when I am out to compliment me.

My theory is that, as I am quite pudgy, these styles give a a kind of cute squishy look that somehow appeals to people? Like the stereotypical large German lady in TV shows who is always trying to hug you? Or Swiss... I've been told I look like a little Swiss girl many times when I wear the Heidi braids. Of course, being told that I look like a "little" anything is pretty laughable!

I adore double buns! I've never done them with sticks...I just use the tiny claw clips. I wear them once or twice a week. They're so comfortable and I think they're cute. I wish mine were bigger, but I have found that wrapping half clockwise and the other half counter-clockwise gives more volume.

Okay, I'm a fan but I've never worn them before because I didn't have the tools (I can never get a whole hairstyle to hold with hairpins). I like them lower or mid-level, and I don't think I could pull off high. BUT, inspired by this thread and by Foxface's hairstyle in the Hunger Games, I went out and got some claw clips and gave it a shot. (This was the only screenshot I could find of Foxface's double buns; sadly it's blurry: http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m1f1ax1Mxg1qhn9yuo1_400.jpg).

http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n120/Paisley_Love/doublebuns.jpg

I don't know if you can tell from that atrocious mirror picture, but they're held with two claw clips each. Mine are also bulkier than I expected them to be. I think with some tweaking I could get the Foxface type look. ;) Thanks for the motivation!

Foxface! Are you a Hunger Games lover!? Please PM me about it! I actually think Foxface's double buns are held with a hairtie each, the ends play out like they would using a hairtie. Your attempt is lovely too!

Random strangers say odd things sometimes...

I don't know if I like double buns. When I was a kid my mom did a bun on each side of my head, and I yelled and screamed because I thought it looked awful and didn't want to be seen like that. Whether it did look awful, or it was just me freaking out because I wasn't used to it, I really couldn't say, I was just a kid and don't really remember. I haven't tried any other double bun styles as of yet.

Oh, how cute. what inspiration, too.
Maybe I will try this.
My problem will be, though, that I can't part my curly hair evenly at all. I hate fighting against my curl pattern, which I have to fight to do it..don't know if you all will know what I'm talking about exactly. Anyway, I end up with this wierd zigzaggy line instead of a proper part.
but it would solve some problems. 1. could vary my buns. I end up doing one on top of my head all the time, so that I can lean my head back , bun in the same place all the time, no good
2. thick hair problems. I can do a lazy wrap or nautilus now, but not easily. To do one with half my hair though would be no problem at all..
I'm not worried about the part where I look silly because I usually do.

Ooooh! I forgot that I wore them to my Saturday job (this same day, so same outfit exactly) and one of the ladies working there laughed out loud at me but didn't say anything really about why she did so. Like, not in a cruel way, it seemed, more like the sight of the hairstyle tickled her.

The other day I put my hair up in two lazy wrap buns, perfectly even on both sides... and then I remembered I forgot to pull my sweatshirt on beforehand, so I had to take them out and redo them. ^ So gorgeous! :crush:

I love this style so much. :D And all the photos posted here look so beautiful. I'm quite impressed by how uniform you guys manage to make them - it's no small feat to try and make them mirrored - I know I can't. I sometimes do double buns with a section (about a third) of my hair left out so that I can braid it and pin it between and around the two buns to "gel" the look together and make it more like one big figure-8-like updo and less like Leia buns (I always get those comments irl ).

Duchess Fuzzy Buns
February 3rd, 2016, 08:34 PM
Thanks meteor! Yeah, I tried this yesterday also and the bottom bun ended up a lot looser and hence bigger looking than the top one. It is a little tricky to get things even. When I do side by side buns they are rarely perfectly even, but I'm all for "close enough." :o
ETA: Where do you take the section from to do the braid in the style you were describing? From between the two buns?

meteor
February 4th, 2016, 09:45 AM
^ Oh yes, they do look perfectly even, so beautifully done, lauren_alia!
Yes, I just take some hair from nape hairline area (in the middle, between the two sections that will be turned into 2 side-by-side buns) and pin it around the two buns any way that looks nice, but usually in figure-8 fashion. As for vertical bun positioning, I still take nape hair for that third section, but it looks uneven on me when I pin it vertically, because the braid/twist comes out from either left or right (using 2 braids/twists instead of one to come out from each side would solve this problem). It might be worth experimenting with hair sections taken from different areas to create different looks. :)

Double magic knot buns. I made top one first, then used the ends as part of the hair for the bottom bun. Instead of wrapping the bottom buns's excess length underneath, I rope braided it and then wrapped it around both buns.

Very pretty, Wildcat Diva!

I tried a double nautilus bun (side-by-side) the other day. I thought it was cute, but not sure I'd go out in public (my idea of cute doesn't often match up with others'). It also didn't hold very long, but I think that was possibly because my hair isn't quite long enough and extrememly slippery. (Please excuse the greasiness of my hair, it was getting washed the next morning.)

I like how they look on other people, but when done on myself I feel I look a bit silly, or at least not comfortable enough as to leave the house with this style... perhaps I should challenge myself one day and give it a go.

Everyone's double buns look great (I kind of really want a set of little forks to hold doubles with now); I ended up wearing doubles today I felt so inspired. I originally tried two on top of each other but I couldn't figure out the right balance, so I re-did them side by side. They were a little better matched when I wore them out; I mussed them changing shirts after I finished my errands for the day.

So many gorgeous hairstyles! I didn't know that double buns would be so varied :0
I have traction alopecia at the top of my hairline that I'm trying to baby as well as a lot of volume and disobedient curls, so I've taken to making a high loose bun and a lower one when my hair gets in my way too often- so double buns are a lifesaver for me.

I especially love the way you've woven the scarves into your hair @ Calypso! Very creative and looks lovely.

Calypso, I like this style on you and the scarves are beautiful!

Listen, how did you like securing the scarf buns? I ask because I have tried a scarf bun few times and almost ruined a gauzy scarf with bobby pins. You know, because they get stuck in the fabric. So a) securing is difficult and b) scarf seems to easily take some beating. I see you used sticks but I also think I see at least one pin. Did you have any problems with the securing and do you have any tricks you could share? I'd love to use scarf more often but have been hesitating since the time I almost put holes in one.

Calypso
August 7th, 2016, 03:06 PM
Thanks so much, everyone! Arctic, these scarves are a bit old and flimsy anyway (plus I stole them from my mum :P) and had at least one hole, so I wasn't too worried about damaging them. But the sticks actually held them pretty well, I only needed one pin to secure the end of one of the scarves. I probably could have pinned them more to make them neater, but I quite like the messy look. :) It probably depends on the material of the scarves, too; these ones are quite silky feeling and so the pin slid easily on and off without damaging them, but other scarves might break more easily.

WD I love that look!

I last posted on this thread in 2012, perhaps I care less about what other people think now than I did then (likely) because I have no qualms about double buns anymore, even the more unusual versions. I would wear them every day if I weren't so lazy. I like accessorizing with little scrunchies too (for extra goofiness?). I think I posted this on the bun thread but here are some messy ones placed low:

https://i.imgur.com/xgLRj1Il.jpg

I also spent a good long time experimenting with doing Sailor Moon style buns without any hair ties and felt so freaking kawaii when I finally got it to work. I haven't worn them out but my inner child is busy convincing me. (Spotty mirror pic for the win.)

https://i.imgur.com/Q3haBW1l.jpg

(I also felt very accomplished because the method is rather length-shortening and the tails are still so long!)

I like them-- both low and high-- but they don't always work so well for me. They end up too large, and instead of being cute, they just look like two big cinnamon rolls on my head (my head is also small, so the buns nearly touch). The only way to make the circumference smaller is to let them bee-butt, but then they stick out and look silly, like weird antennae. :(

Those are looking good.

I’m not the biggest bun fan in the world, but just stuck my double braids into side by side centre-held buns. I love the idea of holding them with antlers, if I can get them in the right length. The pins are a little short and I wouldn’t trust them to hold for much.

Elodea

I like double buns, but obviously they take a bit longer to do than single buns. If I want them to look a little less whimsical, I place them lower on the head rather than right at the top like ears. Usually I don't pay too much attention to making them perfectly even or even parting my hair with a comb, I just separate it into two approximately equal sections by hand and then bun. So they probably come out looking a bit wonky at least some of the time. I attempt to get them symmetrically positioned on my head, but that doesn't always turn out perfecty.

I've only tried double buns with nautilus buns or cinnabuns, though currently I think nautilus buns work better. Usually I do them side by side, but once I did them lined up vertically. I want more pairs of short(er) hair sticks so that I can use them for double buns. Or maybe even a set of three so I could try triple buns?

I do find that sometimes the ends of my hair seem to poke at my scalp a bit uncomfortably with this style (around the center part), or at least I think that's what's happening.

Thanks! They are actually large U pins I found on Amazon. They have a bunch of colors to try and match hair colors. They really come in handy for working like a tiny fork for smaller buns like this, or pinning up a braided bun while mostly hiding. But I find them more secure than normal sized U pins, and I don't need so many.
