View Full Version : Heat free curls all day from dry hair

Hi everyone,

I have been trying to find a way to have heat free curls that last all day and have experimented with lots of different techniques over the months/years. Most have included going from wet to dry overnight using curlers, rags, paper etc etc. 99% of the time I look like Shirley Temple with weird sticky outy ends and I end up having to wash it out.

So yesterday I tried something new. I waited until my hair was totally airdried and that night I put in these curlers which I bought from ebay. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/6X-SOFT-BENDY-HAIR-ROLLERS-Foam-Curlers-NEW-easy-use-/330555718046?pt=AU_Hair_Care&hash=item4cf6a7f99e

I rolled them into my dry hair in five of the rollers (I've lost one already!!!) and stopped at my chin. I rolled them pretty much like in the picture only I rolled them outways rather than under.

I had to leave really early this morning so I just took them out of the rollers, threw my hair up into a half up and went to work (hadn't even checked the back until I got to work).

When I got home this afternoon it was all still intact and had dropped a little which I like (hate the bouncy look as it all bounces up and down when I walk).

I wanted to see how it looked when I brushed it so I brushed it out using my wooden quill brush and smoothed in a little Nightblooming Panacea ( which I am loving by the way. I discovered when I put it in dry hair it soaks in and makes it wonderfully soft). This is the result - all day curls which I really like and no heat. It's a different curl to my normal pattern and I'm pretty sure it's going to hang around until my next wash, to a small degree. If I hadn't brushed through them I think the curl would be start up a little higher but I'm happy with this look too.

Wow! Great results! I've seen those curlers online before but they look complicated to put in. My hair isn't just coarse, it is coarse to the power of 2 so I have the same issue with the weight of my hair not holding a curl well.

Hey Christine1989, I just took a peek at your album and honestly your texture looks alot like mine on the second day when my natural curl is more of a wave. These are honestly not difficult to put in and I was surprised that they stayed in all night, I slept fine even though I toss and turn constantly all night. So far they are the only thing that has worked for my hair other than hot rollers.

Such beautiful hair OMG :D

Curls really really lasted all day?
I do get such curls on dry hair with similar soft curling thingies, it's just that they fall apart within 2 hours.

I took the curlers out at 7am this morning. Those photos were taken at around 4pm this afternoon and just for kicks, here's one in my fuzzy robe at 8:45pm - not very glamorous attire!! Dropping further but I am sitting on the couch with my hair squished up against the back of the seat and it is over 12 hours later. I should point out that I have naturally wavy/curly hair so curl does hold pretty well unless it's with heat. Heat creates nice curls but they normally completely drop out in about 2 hours and looks almost straight. This is way better for my hair and the results are better.

ETA - OMG I just posted a picture of myself in my fuzzy robe ARGHHHH!!!

Wow truly goregous curls. I'm looking for something simple and cheap to give my hair a different curl pattern in a heat free method. Your hair is pretty wurly/curly in its natural state, did you comb/brush it out before putting it into the rollers or as it was?

I airdried it, and then later that evening (around 10pm) I brushed it and put it into the rollers. I think I used the Nightblooming Panacea on it before I rolled it but I can't remember exactly. I certainly put it on before I took the photos at the beginning of the thread.

Hopefully this isn't one of those things that happens right only once for me. My avatar is one of those moments - never had that happen again.

Your hair is beautiful! We have the same hair type, but mine never looks as nice as yours. Now I have to try those rollers, too.

Want. Says it ships from Hong Kong and takes 3 weeks... I am so not patient.

Mine arrived today. I'm debating dampening my hair first as I doubt my hair will do anything if I start with dry hair.

Love the results!

I totally just ordered 2 packs of these on ebay. Free shipping, 12 rollers for $3.72. Can't imagine I'd need 12, but I may give the second pack to my little sister.

I've actually been looking at different kinds of rollers to wear overnight or before events. These just may do it for me, and even if I have to wait a month to get them, they're worth the price! :)

Please post your results here. I'm currently trying out different curling options. I tried massive bendy rollers and got waves as opposed to curl. The curlers I used here are the only ones that gave me sausage curls and give me a good result every time. I have to say that the Nightblooming panacea is making my hair sit really nice and helps me separate the curls beautifully and keep my hair moisturised. I cannot rave about this product enough. It seems I can put it on my hair night and day and it never looks oily or overloaded with product.

Too sleepy yesterday. Maybe today.

I have these! But I used 3 packs (18 curlers) so the curls I got were much tighter. Too tight, actually. And it's uncomfortable to sleep in like that, so I've still been preferring to use a hot curling iron. Maybe I should try it with only 6 curlers and see what happens.

o0o0o I love how the curl turned out and the shine of your hair is so pretty.. I'll have to consider these curlers

I used mine the other day. I used 7 curlers and it did work to give me curls overnight on dry hair, and they were comfortable. But, I didn't like the curls b/c my hair actually showed the square shape of the rollers at the bottom of the curls. The curls were also tighter at the bottom, which isn't really natural. I think when I use them again, I will use fewer curlers, larger sections of hair, and perhaps start rolling in the middle of my hair and roll in a spiral motion to make them more natural-seeming.

I will have to consider buying these curlers also. I am selling my curling iron and trying to stay away from heat as much as possible but I miss my curls so bad. I use sponge rollers in my hair but I like the big sausage curls that you have in your picture. I can't seem to get those kind of curls with the sponge rollers.

I just noticed that they are not in US if anyone has some they would like to sell from here I would be glad to buy them.

I am also experimenting with another way of curling it, from another YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYxS1ohz4Ao&feature=player_embedded.

I didn't like the way she brushed her poor hair, but I did find the method to be pretty neat. I tried it last night, but my hair was too wet and the curls fell out pretty soon (still damp when I got up and I don't use hair spray/mousse/gel or anything like that any more). So, I am trying it again. It's pretty comfortable to sleep in and actually kind of cute; certainly better than wearing curlers/rollers/Curlformers. I have 3 skinny little headbands that I can use for it, not too loose or too tight, but I wish I had a reddish-brown one that would hide in my hair. Also, I don't leave it on the forehead but just inside the hairline.

Rolled up for the night:

The following morning (immediately after taking the headband out) and just a little finger-combed:

Yeah, Eirelin, that actually is cute. If you had a headband the color of your hair and maybe some cute accessories, I could see that being a nice hairstyle all by itself. :D And the curls and waves you got from it are not bad either.

I'm looking for heat-free ways to curl my hair, too. I think I'll try rags first since they're the cheapest (:p). I once had a friend curl my hair with a curling iron for an event, and I got so many compliments, and I loved the look (I've always felt like a curly girl on the inside lol). If rags don't work I might try these. :)

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I got these in, but I cannot get them to stay in my hair. My hair just rolls right out of them. Is it because my hair is layered? Even still, I took a huge chunk of hair and it's still not staying put. I feel like a bit of an idiot.

This happens to me when I put too much hair into the curler. Try doing it with smaller sections and see if it'll stay closed like that. If it stays put, then you need to use more curlers and put less hair in each one.

(edit) maybe I misunderstood... Is this the hair falling out rather than the curler being unable to be closed? and if so, are you starting with dry or damp hair? The Japanese directions on mine say you're supposed to use them on slightly damp hair, and it's definitely a lot easier for me to get the layered parts of my hair rolled up when it's a little damp.

Yeah, the hair is slipping right out. I used dry hair, so maybe that's the problem. I will definitely try using damp hair. :)

Thanks so much.

So I gave them a try today - I used them on hair that had a bit of coconut oil on it, and spritzed each section with watered down conditioner. I used 6 rollers.

Thanks. It's a thumbnail, if you click on it, it should take you to a much, much larger image in photobucket.
