I need a hair style to go with a mischievous forest fairy costume. I've looked around, but everything I can find is either for short hair or really elegant and dressed up. Does anyone have suggestions for a fairy-ish style that will work for tailbone-length, very slippery hair, and that's more Puck than Galadriel?

If these types of styles from this thread, Elven hair styles...for the Tolkienites (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=54335&highlight=elvish) are too elegant, maybe one or two of them could be modified to be a little more mischievious "sprite" like by the accessories or a few faux hair streaks in wild colors.
The dance scene from "A Knight's Tale" has some pretty cool looking long hairstyles you could grab some ideas from too.
Bantu knots would be a really good option too. They'd probably stick out really far with your length.
Sikozu, a character from Farscape, wore these a lot when her hair wasn't loose.

I really want to avoid anything Tolkien-esque or too serene or gentle looking.
I'll have to experiment the bandu knots. Any thoughts on how to secure them? All the tutorials I'm finding suggest just elastic ties, but I don't know that those would be secure with as long as my hair is.
Also, yay Farscape! :D

I've never had TB length hair, so I don't know if this would work for you, but the last time I was feeling mischievous, I did an equilibrium bun on each side of my head about where a high ponytail might go. I wasn't going anywhere that day so I just secured them with two short hairsticks (one in each) so it looked a little wacky...but that might be a good thing. It might work with spin pins, I haven't tried that. Maybe partial buns...let part hang out in a ponytail, so you'd have some length but not all of it to deal with? Just brainstorming a few ideas.

I have also never had TB length hair but this^^?
I like the idea of partial buns - and you could leave the pony part out - or do small braids and secure them back up at the bun if you really wanted to eat up the length? Might look crazy - might look cool? :)

How about a series of braids?
Take small feathers (colour coded to your costume) and braid them "into" a series of face - framing braids, add some ribbons into the braids of varying lengths and maybe tie a few bells to the ends of your braids??

I was thinking of small accent braids in loose hair, maybe woven with ribbons or vines or flowers. Did you take a look at the links posted in the thread Gabriel recommended? Those are actually similar to what I had in mind and they don't look particularly elven, and definitely not strictly elegant. (and btw Galadriel's hair is just loose with some over her shoulders...it's not very distinctive)
The question is whether you want loose hair or updos or something in between? (all your hair in lots of tiny braids, for example, could look really cool with TB length hair)
If you want your hair out of the way, I really like chenille's idea, it sounds super cute and Puck-ish.

I found this site (http://www.rainbowhaircolour.com/blog/how-to-do-ribbon-braids/) a few days ago...... it seems very Fairy/Punky-ish
Another style you could do is a loose/messy crown braid with some free curly strands around your face. To me, that seems very forest fairy...

Braidwaves, with random small braids and stuff woven in. Don't forget the glitter!

Hm.... What about a high ponytail atop the head with a band that has flowers, with some hair from say... ear to forehead hanging down over the shoulders?

I LOVE FARSCAPE! haha
okay for fairy styles.. what i imagine is loose and curly, maybe half up.. accent braids throughout with some flowers or leaves maybe... an updo perhaps could be lace braid or french/dutch braids following the hairline back into a rose bun?

In my mind I have a hard time differentiating between elven and fairy hairstyles. I guess fairy is going for a bit more youthful, playful feel, right? Since mostly elves are portrayed with strait hair, I'm thinking the first step away from it would be wild-looking waves or curls. So maybe sock bun curls? The only fairies I can think of at the moment all had pixie cuts or shoulder length layers. I definitely think flowers somehow woven in might look really nice! Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I can't wait to see what you go with. Please share pictures if you can!

The fairytale braid is really lovely. I can't figure out how to do one yet but Torrin Paige (http://www.youtube.com/user/torrinpaige#p/search/6/-VtZ2ps-yrg) has a how to.

Yay Farscape! :D
I always mean to try the bantu knots but I never get around to it. Myabe a hair pin with an ouchless small hair band? I would probably leave the ends out an inch or two and spike them all around though.
What about double odango knots with some short fake hair stuck in the knots and fanned out?
That ribbon hairstyle from the blog linked is great!

Yeah but John nicknamed her Sputnik because of that; might not be the look she was going for! ;) j/k
OP, I remember a while back seeing a picture Nightshade had in her album of a "mermaid" hairstyle. It was a simple half up bun or twist (can't remember) held up with a piece of driftwood with strings of shells draped around the crown. It looked SO cool and fairy-ish, IMO.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I'm going to play with some of them and see what I come up with.
To be more specific about the type of thing I'm looking for in case anyone has further suggestions, anything with significant loose and flowing hair codes as elegant and serene to me, which doesn't fit the character at all.

Hm, may be a bit radical but have you consideredf holding bantu knots in with thread? (Comes from reading the "Russian" hait care tip of using a horse mane & tail shampoo - well, pony folk braid then stitch plaits in.) This may be a bit too radical [as in, stupid], but if you really don't trust elastics it's one possible way to go!
Oh & yeay Farscape! Storming hair on strong women - what's not to love?!
Crown braid with lots of foliage braided in the full length, so you wear both the length up & loads of decorative vegetation? (Maybe best to use artifical leaves, or herbs your scalp gets along with?)
Please show pics?!

I have no idea if you would consider this playful, but what about knot buns on either side of your head? There are pictures of them here: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showpost.php?p=1408991&postcount=5.

Big messy braid full of flowers. Or leave it down and clip in flowers and leaves to your hearts desire.
When I put together my work appropriate fairy costume I made a wreath of flowers that matched the wings and wore only that for hair adornment.

I would suggest a loose "angel braid" (http://1.static.wix.com/media/8d179a3132cc56ad845040656c050752.wix_mp) which I used for a friend's prom. The braid itself didn't take long, but my sister added curls which did add on some time. I'm new to long hair updo's, but maybe if you did rag-tie curlers overnight beforehand, that would make the curling part easier.
Here are a couple pictures from when I had my hair done with an "angel braid". At the time, my hair was about BSL I think, but I'm sure it'll be fine with longer hair. :)

oh yes, and my sister braided in ribbon as well. I think it gave the updo a little extra oomph. Actually, she might have also braided the sections pulled from the sides before joining them into the one big braid. I'll ask her if she has the pictures from it :)

I ended up putting my fringe in badu knots, and then for the rest, I've got a braided celtic knot bun in the center, with the ends hanging loose instead of wrapped, and then two equilibrium knot buns to either side, also with some ends hanging out. And then I've got some fabric flowers and sticks tucked in all over.
Thank you all so much for your suggestions!

I like a lot of the hairstyles from the Stargate movie. There's a relatively simple one where the hair is braided in four braids, two in front of the ear and two behind. I did it on myself and my friend said I looked like a Viking, though. I can't find a picture of it.
Here's another Stargate style that might be adaptable:

I happen to think my curly hair is very fairy-ish already, since it's wild-looking and fun. I just pinned some pieces from the front back with bobby pins, and I pinned in fake leaves in with the bobby pins as well. I also used elastics to attach the leaves to the bottom parts of my hair, holding them up by the stem. My mom got the leaves from michaels, and she sewed some on my dress too!!
I think now that my hair is longer, I would look much more impressively fairy-ish. Cascading curls + tons of leaves = yes, please!!
also, if I ever did it again, I would take a hint from this hairstyle. It just breathes "midsummer night's dream" to me.
