View Full Version : Waist close to hip?

I am really confused about what is considered waist and what is hip. The smallest part of my waist is actually at the bottom of my rib cage, but whenever I see people showing waist, they have their hands at the natural curve above their hips. For me, my waist is smallest at the very top of that area. To add to the confusion, my hip bones are right at the bottom of that area, so my hip point and waist are only one inch apart? Can this be correct? I am 5'8" with long legs and a short waist. It seems for me to reach where everyone else is calling waist, I'd need three more inches, and waist would also be hip. Hmmm...not too sure I have this right. What do you think?

For me waist is simply the smallest part of your torso, be it close to your hips or far off, just where the measuring tape gives me the smallest number ;) For me that's about 2 inches from my hipbones, but I don't know if people measure hip from the hipbones

Hehe this hair measuring sure is complicated at times. Thank goodness it's all in good fun!

I've always used a picture like this to figure it out.

Honestly, I'd just ignore the hip and tailbone lengths, because (as you note) the LHC versions of hip and tailbone aren't terribly useful. The spot where your hip bones start is usually called "high hip" in fashion design and sewing patterns, and it usually is quite close to your waist. And to most people if your hair is out and hits high hip, it will still get called waist length. There's no way I'd call hair that just brushes my high hip "hip length". My hips are the fullest part of my body and a solid 8" below my waist, not a mere 2"!
Tailbone doesn't make a lot of sense either, since feeling the end of your tailbone is going to be rather tricky. "Butt crack length" gets used a fair bit and I quite dislike it. If I use the ordinary full hip measurement for a milestone marker, that'd be solidly a LHC style tailbone.
So basically if my hair gets that long, I'll just ignore the LHC markers and use hip in the more usual sense. Won't be relevant anyway, since once I'm past high hip if I'm bothering to keep growing it'd be all the way down to classic.

I totally understand what you're talking about because I have a short waist too and the smallest part is right under the ribcage as well. I think we're just high-waisted, and personally, I just call that part the waist, since the waist is suppose to be where the body dips in. When I was at waist, I used to get so puzzled when I'd look at pictures of other people's waist length hair, and it looks much longer than my own.
Another way people determine where the waist is is by the belly button (though this method seems to be used more often for tailoring clothing). But if I used that method, then like you, I'd only get an inch between "waist" and hip.

I'm a little confused about it too. I'm 5'-3" and I have a short torso. Where my ribs end and my waist is smallest, is only about an inch from the top of my hip bone. If I bend to the side, my rib bones rest on my hip bone. When I sew, I use the graphic Kyandii posted. But then according to the graphic, waist and tailbone is basically the same thing then. Or tailbone and classic are almost the same?

Waist is where your body folds if you keep your legs still and bend toward the right or left.

Wikipedia has a good image of a human skeleton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_skeleton) that will help. LHC tailbone means that your hair comes *past* the end of your coccyc/tailbone (same body part, just one is in Latin). LHC hip means your hair is just touching your pelvis. LHC classic means your hair completely covers your pelvis.
So, the graphic kyandii posted shows a regular hip line (like you'd use for sewing patterns or for tailoring clothing). The line goes through the fullest part of the woman's body. That's usually between 7" and 10" below the waist. LHC style tailbone is roughly equivalent to this marker, as you can see from our friendly skeleton chart. Get a friend to help hold the tape measure, and you can check! Just make sure it's someone where you won't get embarrassed if they watch you feeling up your own butt for bones.

If I go by where I bend, then I am exactly one inch from fully at waist, and three to four inches from hip. That actually sounds about right on my frame. :)

Great info too, thanks!

This might help. It's an image with all the markers:

OP, I know what you mean. Going by those measurements, on me it means there's an inch to 2 inches between BSL & HL.

If you bend to the side, the bit that bends is the waist. My hips are 4.5" beneath waist.
