i started using manic panic and i was wondering if using it every ...let us say...every 10 days can cause build up, or if in generally manic panic, or any similar semi-permanent hair dye, is automatically causing a build up due to the color ingredients that stick to the hair in order to produce the color.

Do you mean a build-up of colour? Because it will eventually darken the colour with excessive use, especially if you are topping up The colour when it isn't completely faded. This will take many weeks though.

Or if you mean a product build-up then no. At least I've never experienced it and I think it's because of the type of dye it is and ingredients. Veggie dyes only stain hair rather than penetrating it and replacing colour molecules. As they are only semi and only stain hair then there is not much product build-up because they are designed to eventually wash out/fade away.

I could be wrong though, someone else may know better. Or it may just be down to an individuals hair since I've never experienced it but someone else may have. In all my years of veggie dyes though I've only ever noticed a conditioning effect.

It seems to me that it might build up, the way conditioner would, if you're not ever using sulfates. But I expect it would take quite a while.

yep, i mean like a conditioner build up, the color always fades quite fast, in doesn´t get darker ( i mean not on my hair ) .
so i should do once in a while a cleaning wash ? isn´t enough if i do vinegar rinse after every wash to avoid the build up ? do i really have to do a serious sulfate cleasing ?

I think it depends on the color of your hair. For halloween/an anime convention this year I wanted BLUE hair and my hairstylist had been playing around with kool aide so she used a mixture of 10 vol peroxide and various colors for highlights to test/use as a hair model and it turned out fantastic... for about 5 days, then faded. So then she tried using 15 vol and the blue kool aid for the con and it was gorgeous again, but I wanted to make sure it'd stay that way so I started coing and mixed the kool aide into the conditioner so I was kind of coloring it and then after the weekend I figured that it would fade back to a greenish blonde that I could tone a week later... A month later it was still green and I ended up having to do a shampoo cap with a bit of bleach mixed in to get it out of there for good because the chiropractor that I worked for said he felt a bit self conscious introducing me to new clients.

So I guess what I'm saying is be careful what you wish for, but if you're committed to your funky color and don't have anything coming up that you'll need to look professional for I highly recommend mixing it with your conditioner (or find a corresponding kool aid color). And for reference, grape doesn't seem to turn your hair purple, just tones it.

haha, what a great story with your chiropractor. really funny. i make a mix out of mandarin from directions and falmingo pink from manic panic. i wouldn´t want to try that often bleaching it, i also considered adding the color to the conditioner , i just didn´t want to create build up from the color.
green it´s a hard color, especially with that high volume of peroxide. mines washes out pretty easily from water, after 2 washes kinda fades away and my hair looks not nice anymore.
it´s weird , because i thought that semi-permanent colors do the most build up , as they add color and stuff that "attaches" to your hair, in order for the color to stay on it.

You definitely do NOT have to use sulfates to clarify you hair and remove buildup.
There are alternatives: No poo clarifying (http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Go-No-Poo/) and sulfate free clarifying shampoo (http://www.google.com/search?aq=f&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=sulfate+free+clarifying+shampoo#q=sulfate+free+c larifying+shampoo&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbo=u&tbm=shop&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wf&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=71d5c48b7cefe72f&biw=1004&bih=964). If you want to remove mineral buildup as well you can use a sulfate-free chelating shampoo, this (http://www.amazon.com/Itely-Chelating-Treatment-Shampoo-Sulfate/dp/B003BKQY8I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=beauty&qid=1306941518&sr=8-1) is the one I use.

ETA: If you want to reduce fading you can try CO washes (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=18) or sulfate free shampoo (http://archive.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=34009). If you want to avoid conditioner buildup try going cone free (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=2216).

Good luck! :D

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it too much unless there's some reason you absolutely can't clarify. Unless you're allergic to all sulfates and to baking soda, just add it to your conditioner, CO wash or whatever you normally do to prevent fading, and if your hair starts behaving really badly after a few weeks, shampoo it.

I think the very fact that the colour eventually washes out of the hair is a good indicator that it does not build up. If it were truly building up on the hair, one would expect the colour to remain as well, no? (^(oo)^)v

hmm. good question. on the other hand, it will bring us back to my question - because if the "color" is made out of ingredients who cause build up, it means that re-applying it will cause build up by the simple exitence of the "color-ingredients" on the hair.
