Has anyone tried using Emu oil in their hair? either as a conditioning treatment or a leave in?
I have some that I use as a face moisturizer (works great, absorbs quickly & no oily residue as I put my makeup powder on a few min later)
Ive found plenty of info on its use for skin... and emu shampoos online but no real mention of its use as a hair oil...
im going to be doing some experimenting with different things but wanted to find out others experiences if poss. I know a lot of you use Coconut oil in your hair but ive found it leaves my hair "crunchy"
I did a search on here but couldn’t find anything (pos. because emu is to short a word for the search or there’s nothing about it)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Emu oil! Too bad its so expensive. Emu oil is the only oil my DH will use on his head/hair because it does not feel oily. Emu oil is supposed to be a dht inhibitor so he likes using that for his hair loss.
I use it on my face and my ends. My ends LOVE IT! :)

Well I tried it last night, Washed my hair with Rasoul clay and then massaged some emu oil into my hair.. may have used a tad to much though.. LOL.. but probabbly good as we took the dogs to the beach today and it was really windy.. so actully helped protect my hair pretty well.

You are sooo lucky! I pay $21 for 50ml of Emu oil. Its in my local store so I can get it anytime. I should have gone on line and looked for a better deal.

Well ive decided to experiment a bit so figured best to write results here encase its any use for anyone else.
I have fairly thick, very coarse hair, natural (no dyes, don’t use hairdryers/irons, hairspray etc) No idea how to type it as it doesn’t seem to match up with the info I found on here re classifying hair types.
Its been getting kind of dry lately but I always find that if I condition it.. then it gets kinda.. flat..
So normally I wash and then dunk in cold water or use a rinse. still been quite dry on the ends.
So I washed it last Friday night (this is Thursday) with Rassul (sp?) clay and then massaged a fair amount of emu oil into my scalp and ends of hair then a small amount overall.
Result once dry (I wash my hair at night so it can dry naturally overnight) was very shiny wet looking hair that I put up the same way I have in my profile.
Normally I have to wash my hair about every 3 days or I get greasy bits starting at my temples and scalp starts getting "itchy"
No greasy bits this time (then again maybe not noticeable since my hair was oiled already) But ive not noticed any itchiness or feeling of being "dirty" and its been 6 days. when I looked at it on day 3 it looked like the last 16" or so had soaked up all the oil so I applied more to that section of my hair.
his is what it looked like when I took it down/brushed out 3 days ago..

Have just taken my hair down to asses and while its obviously oiled, its all very shiny and soft, lovely feeling :D
I’m away to go wash it although I haven’t decide whether I should re-oil it or wash & rise to see what the actual effect on my hair is.....
TBC (to be continued...)

Emu oil is really good for the scalp. I hear that it helps stimulate hair growth. I probably won't ever use it because I feel bad for the bird. I'll stick to plant oils

Oh Lilmissdirty (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/member.php?u=39151) that's lovely hair! How many days did you say the pic was after washing, 6? Mine would be all limp and unwearable down.
I have to start using it on me too, not only on DH. :)

Emu is my very favorite oil for scalp massage and length, if no one is around ill mix a little neem with it as well. Could have swore i saw more growth when i mixed it with miconazole but maybe it was just a good month.

:p. Eh yeah,...spellings not my strong suit... Exspecialy on the ipad...
The picture above was day 3, it was oily at the top from the emu oil (looked wet more than oily though) I added some more oil to the bottem half and then put it up.
I dont have a picture of it brushed out on day 6 but did take one of it right after i took it down, will post it later once i download it of my camera.
I ended up washing it. With rasoul clay last night(added a bit of emu oil, few drops of lavender, and some orange flower water.. Smelled good anyways :D ) and used a hibiscus rinse after. I dident put any more emu oil in my hair as i wanted to see what the rults were.
Im pretty happy with the results so far, my hair feels much better on the ends, not as dry although i think i might start doing the ends with a few drops daily
Going to get hubby to take a picture of what its like now to post later

Ok this picture is my hair on day 6 right after I unbraided it. once I brushed it it looked pretty close to the one from day 3, maybe a bit more "satiny"

And this was taken tonight (I washed it last night) Brushed out.

You think?
I noticed that to but was thinking it was maybe just cause I washed all the oil out so my hairs more "poofy" once brushed..
I think the last half of my hair still needs some moisturizing treatment but the rest is feeling perticularly nice and silky without being flat now.
Think Ill repeat the oil soak a few more times over the next month..

I love the effect emu oil has on my skin for it's sootheing and reduces redness.
However, I've tried it on my hair and wasn't impressed at all for it didn't moisturise my hair as well as olive oil.

I've never used it, because I don't have money to buy it, but I've heard great things about it! Where can you find cheap, PURE emu oil?

Im in the UK, I found a seller on Ebay that sells Austrilian Emu oil, Ive only gotten the smaller bottles so far but they have 1/2 lt for about £16 incl. shipping. thats what ive been using on my hair.
So update, just been using Rassoul to wash my hair followed by the emu oil (with a drop of Jasmine cause i love the smell.:D
Hairs been feeling sooo much better, feels much more moisturized and not getting oily at the temples as fast so ive been going 4-6 days between washes instead of 3. Oh and it feels thicker to.
So I ran out of Rassoul clay.. crap.. had some on order but not here yet so washed my hair with hubbys shampoo bar (wich by the way smells yummy) and then oiled as normal.. well dont like the results.. its been 2 days and im gonna need to wash my hair tonight cause its already feeling/looking oily & itchy.. no good. Im sure its the shampoo though. My Rassoul clay is now here so think im going to stick with that for washing my hair as it seems to work the best of anythng ive used to date.

I've used it and it is quite good...but I struggle with it on an ethical level. My Jack Russell has terrible itchy skin problems, and I mix it with his shampoo and massage it into his skin while wet, and it's also very helpful for that as it has anti-inflammatory properties.

I've used emu oil as a facial moisturizer and it's not bad, gets the job done. However, I don't really see where it really shines over cheaper, vegetable oils. Plus, my bottle broke and while I was trying to fix it I accidentally got a little bit in my mouth, it had this horrible, salty taste that I can't get out of my mind so I stopped using it lol. I tried massaging it into my hair a few times, but I couldn't really see the difference there either. The brand I used was Emu Gold, I got the 1oz for $16 which had a pretty good amount of product in it, I had been using it for a few months and there's still plenty left.

I just started using Emu Oil two weeks ago and I'm in love. It cured my dry, icky velcro ends- which I was about to cut, again. I've cut off 4-5 inches this year alone and I woulnd't have if I knew about Emu Oil. So so many oils & deep treatments & butters and I've finally found the right one.
It's great as a facial moisturizer too!
