I have straight hair, hair type is 1b and I always yearned to have curly / permed hair. So, about near 2 years back, I did ceramic perm on my straight hair and the perm itself only lasted for 3 months plus. The caring of permed hair was tedious to me and because it used heat and chemical, my hair turned very dry. At the end, I chopped BSL + hair length to collar bone to regrow my hair all over again.

I've watched different youbube videos on making your hair curl without using heat and one of my favorite video is from Loepsie on "How to curl your hair with a sock! No heat." Unfortunately, I am still not successful of using this method, not too sure if the reason is due to the layers of my hair.

I'm happy to discovered any method to curl my hair, which is similar to using sock :) For the below steps, I am using a bun maker which is for people who will like to have high bun hair style. Example: http://www.google.com.sg/imgres?imgurl=http://img2.timeinc.net/instyle/images/2010/hlotd/010410-jennifer-lopez-400.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.instyle.com/instyle/package/general/photos/0,,20301062_20334486_20721888,00.html&usg=__I_zrl7GtTsCPM0G96VzEza-vtPA=&h=400&w=400&sz=37&hl=en&start=36&zoom=1&tbnid=uiiu3gYzrHa_sM:&tbnh=141&tbnw=135&ei=ccXgTf7vO4vIrQeK8PjyBg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhigh%2Bhair%2Bbun%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DX% 26biw%3D1440%26bih%3D756%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=1182&vpy=243&dur=258&hovh=199&hovw=198&tx=112&ty=147&page=2&ndsp=35&ved=1t:429,r:8,s:36&biw=1440&bih=756 (http://www.google.com.sg/imgres?imgurl=http://img2.timeinc.net/instyle/images/2010/hlotd/010410-jennifer-lopez-400.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.instyle.com/instyle/package/general/photos/0,,20301062_20334486_20721888,00.html&usg=__I_zrl7GtTsCPM0G96VzEza-vtPA=&h=400&w=400&sz=37&hl=en&start=36&zoom=1&tbnid=uiiu3gYzrHa_sM:&tbnh=141&tbnw=135&ei=ccXgTf7vO4vIrQeK8PjyBg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhigh%2Bhair%2Bbun%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DX% 26biw%3D1440%26bih%3D756%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=1182&vpy=243&dur=258&hovh=199&hovw=198&tx=112&ty=147&page=2&ndsp=35&ved=1t:429,r:8,s:36&biw=1440&bih=756)

Here are a few pictures of the bun curls I had

Items you need to make bun curls:
- a comb
- a bun maker, picture as below
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g88/REfusion88/Thebunmaker-1.jpg
Bun maker is a longish flexible bun maker with a hole in the middle.
- any types of hair oils / leave in conditioner / hair serum you preferred (optional)

Here are the following steps with pictures :)

First Step
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g88/REfusion88/1stStep-1.jpg

Tie your hair high up on your head. It can even be higher than the one I did. Lightly wet/sprinkle your hair with water on your pony tail. Hair needs to be slightly damp but not too damp if not the curls will not form. Maybe some hair types will form better with damper hair, you can experience which level of dampness works best for you. Before tying my hair, I will use 1 or 2 drops of camellia hair oil on my hair.

Second Step
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g88/REfusion88/2ndStep-1.jpg

Put all your ponytail hair into the hole of the bun maker. The bun maker should be all the way up leaving only the tail of your hair.

Third Step
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g88/REfusion88/3rdStep-1.jpg

Press the remaining tail of your hair around the bun maker. So when you roll your hair down after words, the remaining hair will not stick up. '

Fourth Step
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g88/REfusion88/4thStep-1.jpg

Roll your hair down by holding the 2 ends of the bun maker.

Fifth Step
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g88/REfusion88/5thStep-1.jpg

Once you can no longer roll your hair down anymore, this is how your hair will look like as shown in the above picture.

Sixth Step
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g88/REfusion88/6thStep-1.jpg

Next, press the 2 ends of the bun maker towards your hair. As the bun maker is flexible, you can press a little harder to ensure it holds your bun.

Seventh Step
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g88/REfusion88/7thStep-1.jpg

This is my favorite step of the moment :) Lightly pull your hair from both sides to cover the bun maker entirely.

Eighth Step
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g88/REfusion88/8thStep-1.jpg

This is how your hair bun will look like after you have wrap the bun maker entirely with your hair.

I will show the results in a few hours later. :)

I usually will use this bun maker to make curls overnight. Sleeping on the bun maker is comfortable as it is soft and flexible.

I have tried using this on my hair for only about 3 to 4 hours and the curls formed well. Though, if you want a more lasting curls for the entire day, sleeping on it for overnight works much longer and better.

Stay tune for the results :)

What a clever idea :) Speaking as someone who is not good at making buns I think this method looks easy enough for anyone to try. I've seen the bun-maker tools for sale on eBay and have wondered if they're worth buying - think I might treat myself to one, having seen your tutorial.

Looking forwardto seeing the results :)

Thanks :) The bun maker turns our to be useful. I bought it to make high bun and only when I took out the maker, I realized it can make overnight curls too.

WOW, that looks easy enough. Makes me want to buy one. Looks like it would be comfortable to sleep on also.

Thank you for the tutorial.

Hi Ladies and Gentlemen,

here are the results :)

Fresh Curls
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g88/REfusion88/FreshCurls-1.jpg

I didn't take pictures of removing the bun maker. Just need to unwrap the bun maker slowly and unroll all the way up gently and remove the hair band. The curls will look messy just like the picture shown as above.

You can then tame the curls by using your fingers to gently separate the curls and comb/brush gently.

You may wish to use hair serum or oil to tame the frizz.

I don't really use hair spray and the perm can last at least a day.

After taming the curls, (Not using any hair serum or oil)

Thanks :)

If your hair is heavy and long, I will suggest putting it up longer.

I feel that as my hair grows longer and heavier, the lasting effect is not so great anymore.

Love your hair! I do this same thing! But I use some frizz taming cream (Dove), a little water mixed with coconut oil (if my hair isn't damp already), and some spray gel. I put the pony tail way high up on my head and use a scrunci, so I don't have a definite line. I use a black sock instead of the bun maker, but I do have that too.

This seems like this would work a bit better b/c sometimes that sock is hard to use and my hair gets stuck a bit and won't go through all the way and it gets really frizzy. I do sleep with it overnight to make sure the curls last for (at least) half the day. My hair does not hold curl well!

Nessarose: Using a scrunchie sounds like a brilliant idea. Have to tie hair hair up to tie a little looser to avoid the definite line. Usually if i had the line, I will wet the top part and comb.

I'm still trying the sock bun curls too, my hair always end up in the messy bun. :(

Fufu,

You've had a nice idea, the sock bun method is something I cannot do but I think I can manage a bun maker :).

Suggestion: As your hair gets heavier and longer, just get a second bun maker and make the same ponytail and just divide it into two sections. Use a bun maker on each section. You would only have the one ponytail at the top of your head, but it's split into two sections so your hair curls better around the bun maker and the curls last longer.

Thank you! I can't wait to try this out, as my hair is straight and I prefer it has more body.

awesome tips!! thanks for being so discriptive. The sock bun wasnt working for me either.. I think I just have too much hair or maybe it doesnt have enough time in.. even overnight only the bottom 5 inches are curly.. Well I might try this.

I do the sock bun overnight a lot, maybe 3 times a week. My hair is about waist with long layers - it definitely took some practice at first, but now I have it pretty much down.

I always take the elastic or scrunchie out entirely once I have the bun in (just before I roll it down the last turn or 2) to avoid the dreaded "line" which we all hate, and just roll it down nice and tight. I am sure this would work with the bunmaker too.

On me at least, the bun is looser this way, but still stays in while I sleep - if I am wearing it around the house or out anywhere, I jam a hair stick in to keep it in place. Sometimes I will put it in my hair one morning and leave it in till the next morning, then have curls on day 2.

Fufu, your hair is so pretty! I love the red streak :)

I really want to try this! I usually just have a messy bun with a regular Goodie hairband and it leaves some waves (though very messy), but because of the band it has dents/lines in it. Gotta find a bun maker! :D

DorothyAtForty: I love it as adding body to my fine and limp hair too. Suddenly I have BIG HAIR..

dragonchickx: My hair is fine and sock bun is not working for my hair type too. Perhaps, I wasn't doing it right or I'm not using a right sock hehe.

spigette: That's a good idea, I wonder if I could take out the elastic band before I finish the last step of the bun maker. Should try this tomorrow night or so.

agoddess2die4: Hope you enjoy the outcome of the bun maker. Do tie up your hair higher than the picture I shown on first page to avoid definite line. I had to wet and comb mine to make the line disappear.

Fufu or if you find elastic hard to remove after you roll up the sock, I suggest using your Flexi 8 to ponytail first and removing the Flexi 8 just as you are about to roll up to the ponytail :p

I tried this last night with the bun maker and a pony tail high on my head. I rolled it forward like you did in the pictures and it was pulling on my hair so much that it was really uncomfortable. So I rolled it backwards and that helped it feel a little better, but when I took it down this morning, I didn't have any curls just (sort of) a wave. But my hair was still kinda wet, too. I might have to try this again. Have you tried it with rolling your hair backward instead of forwards?

Fufu
May 31st, 2011, 07:24 AM
I have not tried rolling it backwards, sounds like a good idea too :)

Perhaps your hair is a little too wet. I realized for my hair type if my hair is too damp, the curls doesn't form and my hair will still feel damp.

I am doing the hair bunning with the bun maker without the hair band. Will try the rolling backwards tomorrow night :)

Very cute. I don't think I can reach my ends in such a way as to put in a bunmaker, though.
