How often do you oil? I'm thinking I want to start doing an overnight heavy oil treatment before each wash for a while to see what happens. I wash about every 5-6 days; is that too much oil?

I'll probably be experimenting with olive, coconut, sunflower, and/or avocado oils, with a few drops of one or the others as a leave-in after washing. But which oils help with which effects? Or is oil just oil?

Every scalp is different, so which oil you use depends largely on you! I tend to do a heavy oiling once a week. Slather my hair with oil the night before wash day, braid it and go to sleep. Since I shower at night, I just go to work with my hair oiled & braided - it just looks like I have gel in my hair!

I usually do my heavy oiling with coconut oil and use a bit of EVOO on my ends after a wash. Last night, however, I found a mix oil called "Africa's Best Ultimate Herbal Oil" and tried that after my WO shower last night. I woke up this morning and my hair was like silk! I think I'm hooked! LOL

I've tried grapeseed oil, but I really can't get past the smell and how oily/stringy it makes my hair feel. I know others who have great success with grapeseed oil, I'm just not one of them! :)

This article is helpful. MeganE pointed it out in a recent oiling thread.

Also, this thread is really helpful as well.

I'm experimenting with oils myself as coconut oil doesn't seem to be for me. So far, camellia is my front-runner. Henna Sooq often has oil samples which helps if you want to try new things without spending a lot of money on big bottles.
