Why when i do my hair in different hairstyles people think is strange? I get discouraged from listening strange and sometimes mean comments. Hmm i am the only one who ever had this experience? I personally think these hairstyles are unique and beautiful..

I think people are just jealous they can't do what you can with your hair. Don't get discouraged, pity them for their lack of skill or imagination.
Emerson said, "To be GREAT is to be misunderstood."
They're just scared of the power you have to be different. If you think it's beautiful, embrace it, and ignore them.

Thanks for the reply! :D
But especially boys find them strange. For example when i use hairsticks! When i have my hair in a chinese bun even my brother comments: hey what's that stupid wood you 've putted? -_- Oh and i can't forget the meanest comment i once had..: Did you had an accident? (okay it was quite a funny comment...but when i thought about it again...uh....) -_-

Anything unusual is often viewed as bad. ANything against the norm. Anything NOT common to that person. This is the root of many prejudices!
Next time say...So would you prefer I just look like everyone else, because THAT hasn't been done? It doesn't need to be said snotty. But people need to think sometimes instead of just reacting.

Gotta love siblings. I hope he grows out of being such an oaf, ASAP.
As for everybody else - where do they get off making unsolicited, unkind comments? Did their parents not raise them right? Seriously, is there any culture where just walking up to someone and saying something snotty, is considered polite, pro-social behaviour?
Do you live somewhere uniquely reknowned for rude people? Where I live, I'd probably have to sculpt my hair into a life-size chicken statue before anybody would say anything, and even then, most people would just look away uncomfortably.

I was wearing my hair in a bun with hair sticks at the grocery store and as I walked by a "lady" she laughed at me.Nice.People's rudeness still astounds me at times.

I was at work with hairsticks in a bun, a lady I work with just stood there behind me staring. She then said very loudly that it looked like I had breadsticks in my hair. I should have said that not everything is about food to some people!

I was asked once "Why do you wear a wig, do you have cancer?" I do not wear a wig my hair is 100 percent my own, but can you imagine saying that to someone? What if they actually where wearing a wig because they had cancer? That guy had no shame or sense of decency. :O

I'm glad I don't live in a place where people feel free to make snotty remarks about my hair. Honestly, sometimes I spend so long perfecting a style that I wish someone would say something - ANYTHING - to me about it, but most of the time - no. Maybe I'm invisible.

Remind me never to go to these places! Those people sound horrible!
Please take comfort in the fact that you have a whole site of people from all over the world who love creativity in hair! Please dont let those foolish people get you down...

Wow. Some people are just strange..
I once had my hair in a simple braided bun and some lady looked at it oddly and sincerely asked if I were Mennonite. Just because of my hair- I gave no other indication. o_O

It's times like these when I feel very fortunate to be living in a community where most people are able to co-exist with those who do things that are out of the norm.

I think all women turn invisible after they're 50. And it's not all bad.

Obviously the people saying these things 1.) have no social skills and 2.) have no life. I spend a lot of time in the city so my hair is definatly not the strangest thing around but I got a bunch of mean hair comments in middle school. I would always be doing something new with my hair trying to hide the natural texture which I hated back then. Kids would always make fun of my hairdo (or hair don't!) but hey, that's middle school. When grown adults are gossip like middle schooler that's just pathetic.
Hey, where are the pictures of these "strange", new hairstyles you try? The hairstyle challenged like me want good ideas!

Just ignore them. You don't just think your hairstyles are unique and beautiful the truly are and no rude comment changes that.

Oh thank you so much guys! I really love you! The truth is that i live in Grece in a little town....and there is so much prejudice about everything..people just don't stop gossiping. Uh... the only really beautiful comment i 've heard was from my best friend's sister...she told me i have an unusual beautiful hair...red with pale skin. Oh now i want to post some pictures!!! :D

Someday, sometime after you get out of highschool, you will reach a certain age where you won't give a bleep bleep what anyone , snotty brothers included say about your hair, your clothes, ect ect.

I may be wrong, but it seems like in small towns, people are more likely to make comments than in big cities, where you learn to ignore everyone around you (much weirder things out there than hair). =) My sister did a road trip across the US, and found that to be the case. What age are these people who make the comments to you? Kids are cruel to one another, and for adults, they're just plain immature. But as you grow, you learn to tune it out. Do what makes you happy, forget everyone else.

I sort of envy people who make that kind of comments. They must have really easy, stress free lives if they can waste time and energy critizising others for not conforming to their standard. Either that, or they're vicious little people with the emotional maturity of a 10-year old.
Just ignore them. Be happy that you have the courage to do things differently, and pity the others for being so brittle and insecure they have to put others down to make themselves feel better. Don't take it personally. They probably say things like to anyone who doesn't fit their narrow perception of "normality".

Well yeah i am a high school student. But i do get comments from older people who think that hairsticks and other hair accesories are strange. I would love so much to wear jewerly in my hair...the kind of ones that give you a fairy look..such as these here for example: http://www.dressytresses.com/store/circlets.asp
But i think i am never going to wear them :(

You wear them if you want to. What's important is YOU like them.

People are often scared of things that they do not understand and it is their defense mechanism to make fun of it. High school is tough because you have so many kids that have no clue about life yet they think they do and they're all put together in one place. Oh, how I don't miss it! Just be yourself and once you get to college you will be greatly appreciated for the same things people make fun of right now.

a couple of days ago I was on the bus and I heard a girl talking to her boyfriend:
"- no, I don't like those thingies the girl is wearing in her hair.."
I was sitting right in front of them, with my hair wrapped in the most normal bun, with a wooden hairstick.
I don't even think that was rude, she didn't wanted me to hear.. it's just that you don't see anyone in the streets using buns, or hairsticks where I live.. the max they do is using claw clips, very messy, just to take their hair out of the face.
I think it's a cultural thing, I live in a big city, but most people here have serious prejudices with anything "strange". When I wore my hair pink, people stared me a lot, it was terrible! Some girl even pulled my hair to see if it was real! And I didn't even knew her :P

I think that a lot of older people have the attitude of "Kids these days! So ridiculous!" and it doesn't matter what you do, they will still have those views. Don't let it get you down.

Fortunately I have never had bad comments about my hair (not to my face anyways) but I wouldn't care about them either.
My school mates are fascinated by my hairstick/pencil updos, though :D

Its not easy to be a trend setter, but hold your ground proudly and one day you will start to see others start to come around. If you need any encouragement just look at the celebrities! Updos are incredible.

Something I've learned in the past few years is that for every person who said something rude or looked at my hair with disgust, at least four more people were admiring it and just not saying anything.
I attended a reunion on sorts and I had so many ladies say how much they loved the fun styles I would do in school, and that they wished they weren't so scared to try them themselves.

High school is tough. In my experience, the jerks aren't jerky because there's something they don't like about you; they're just jerks and they find something to be mean about. But even though it's hard, it will be over eventually, and then your whole amazing life can really begin.
Totally agree with JuliaDancer about cities vs. small towns. It's much easier to look different in a crowd. I live in a small-medium size city; about 500,000 people in the city proper, but it's busy enough that most people don't look twice unless you have fluorescent strobe lights in your hair or something.

You get these comments because you succeed at something ;-) that's what I think. People think they're witty when they these words but it makes them look silly. So nevermind... Some dislike it but some really like (us, for example). Think about people who like what you're doing, it gives you better energy and maybe encouragement too.

You will graduate soon enough, and then you can do what pleases you and just don't associate with people who don't appreciate you. At University, you very likely won't draw a second glance unless it's an admiring one. Universities are places where people develop much broader views of the world and can put things like hairstyles in a proper perspective.
Small toen people sometimes don't have enough experiecnes to develop past being small minded -- but that's not your problem, it's the problem of the people with the tiny little world view.

I remember one time I was walking through town with my husband and this man who looked to be in his sixties walked past us, looked directly at me and said (in one of those very audible whispers that is obviously meant to be heard) "disgusting". To this day I'm not entirely sure what he was referring to, whether it was my hair, the fact I have 2 facial piercings, my clothes and makeup (I generally dress pretty goth) or something else.
Very unfortunately I thought of a good response much too late - "my parents taught me that rudeness is disgusting". I will not miss the chance to use that phrase if such a thing happens again!

I just recently started using hair sticks, and DBF has said some funny things... He calls them "hair spikes" for one. XD Near the beginning he just reached over and pulled one out of my hair (much to my dismay) and looked at it like it was from another planet.
My grandmother also has made comments when she saw my hair braided... she asked "who plaited my hair." As if I have someone else around who would do it for me.

I completely agree. Usually the people who are thinking nice things don't want to be impolite or are shy. Rude folks will be rude--whether they are talking about hair, the weather, or politics.
I used to have a lot of comments made about my hair when I was younger. Now, the comments I get from people who knew me back then are along the lines of, "You've always had gorgeous hair and can do so much with it." I never knew they felt that way.

You're definitely not alone. While I get great compliments when I try our different braids, It's a whole different story when I use hairsticks. Girls usually say it's cute, but guys generally stare and make comments. Some even try to pull one out when they walk by!

Wow awesome! I haven't met personally boys with this kind of style..only with long hair. But it would be fascinating! What made you want to grow your hair long? Is it that you like it and it expresses you or you have mentally reasons...or do you support a style ? I 'd really like to hear!
