View Full Version : Should I go lighter....?

I've been dying my hair black since I was a young teen, my natural hair colour is very dark brown. I currently have synth dreadlocks in so ignore that, just pretend it is normal black hair! :P
I was on a 'makeover' website earlier to try different hair colours on a photo of myself I uploaded, and realised for the first time ever that light hair actually suits me.. (in my opinion).

(Ignore that you can see my real hair on this :p)

So, what do you think? I'm unsure about it. I'd love to lighten it.. but am worried about the damage. I'd definitely do it as slowly and with as much care as possible. (Intense conditioning, not lightening too often etc.) I'm not expecting to lighten it all at once.
Which colour is better? Thanks!
EDIT: I tried another colour too. Blonde but not so bright.

I love the blonde on you. But your siggy pic looks beautiful too. I agree that lighter than black hair would suit you perfectly. Maybe try lighting to a medium brown first off and see how you like it :) it may take a long time to get to blondeblonde and could be very damaging but I think brown would be a lovely change. By the way I love your hair and think the dreads are very cool. :D

with that face colouring you would be able to rock all hair colour!
i mean you can get away with the light blonde but personally i would go for a slightly darker blonde! what condition is your hair in at the moment? because you dont want too cause too much damage that your hair starts to break off! Just be careful!!!

I think the blonde is pretty, but I absolutely ADORE the black hair on you. It is so rare to find someone who is pale with pure black hair and have it not look strange! You pull it off wonderfully and it really looks wonderful with your warm eyes and flawless skin. I would go black in a minute if I could pull it off (does not look so great with rosy cheeks and tons of freckles lol). I say keep the black; not many people have black hair and its wonderful :) There are tons of blondes, black is probably less damaging to dye and it is the prettier color IMHO

You know, I don't think you can go wrong either way, but I do have a slight preference for the dark brown/black.:)

^This :)
You have BEAUTIFUL skin and the black hair really showcases it.
Blonde is all fine but the black looks very exotic on you. I totally understand your need/want to change but IMHO, I like the black on you best.

I like the light blonde on you too, but I can imagine the amount of damage your hair has to go through to get from black to light blonde

A vote for the dark brown here. Black looks great also.
The dark blonde is OK but maybe could do with a softer lipstick colour.

The current black is my favorite, but if you decide to go through with the blonde you could definitely pull it off.

Agreed, you'd be able to pull off most shades. :) My favourite on you is the black though.

I think you shouldn't go lighter than dark brown. Dark hair gives you an exotic look. If you go blonde from such a dark color it will look yellow for while.

I really like the darker blonde color. It suits you wonderfully!!
I like the black too though. I think you can pull off pretty much any color.
Honestly though, I think a nice dark chocolate brown would be beautiful!
If you decide to lighten, you can try honey lightening. It natural and safe, you can do multiple treatments with no harmful effects. It actually conditions your hair! And that way you can see your hair different colors, starting through browns and going to blonde.
Here is the honey lightening thread, you may find it interesting!

I vote for staying with darker shades.

I vote to stay darker too. Personally am more partial to natural colors like dark brown. The blong photo looks awesome though! BUT, and this is a big but, the likelihood you can get your hair to that color without making it look pretty ratty and unhealthy is EXTREMELY unlikely. Trust me, I have done it and not even all the way and it was a disaster show. I had long BSL+ blackest of black hair for years. I got sick of the roots and wanted something more natural back. I went to a salon to get it stripped out and colored back to a light brown. THe result was orangey, not particularly even, frizzy, breaking hair.
It took them a day and two subsequent toning visits to get it looking decent. Ultimately it looked ok, but I will say, I had to cut to SL+ and it also was no longer anything close to healthy hair and required heat to look like it was healthy (which of course perpetuated the damage).

Both blonde and black look great on you, but taking out the black would mean IMMENSE damage-I'd say lighten up to a very warm chestnut, perhaps with red undertones-there are so many delicious brown-hues it's impossible you won't find one you love as much as the light blonde, and it will be a breeze to maintain those roots, as it will be similar to the rest of your hair. Good luck, and let us know what you've decided!

I prefer the dark hair on you, it makes you look sultry and exotic.
The blonde doesn't look too bad but imagine the root upkeep......mmm I think you'd be sorry.

I like both, but you know what I think would suit you? Like a rich chocolate-mahogany brown. You're sooo pretty by the way!

Thanks everyone!
I'm still undecided.
I know that going from black to light brown/blonde will take a long time, and I'm willing to stretch long times between bleach treatments etc and to condition it to death for a while.
I'd still really like some more opinions, and also, I tried another colour, similar to the second pic. I think I prefer this.

I'm a bit weary of the blond. Not only because of the damage, but also because you wouldn't look unique anymore. Your picture with dark hair is striking, the picture with blond hair looks nice (and you can definitely pull it off) but also a bit average (in the sense that million of people look like that - a bleached blonde).

Could you do a photo with dark brown hair? I think that would look FABULOUS! But I wouldn't go any lighter than medium brown.

I think the hair colour you have now is absolutely stunning! It sets off your ivory skin in a very flattering way. :) I'd say stay black, but if you were looking for a change a darker brown!

With your light complexion you could easily be a blonde, but with black
dreads you are a long why from blondie-ville. You would get lots of damage
just from combing out the dreads and then bleaching and color-fixing your
hair to Kingdom Come. If you decide on blonde it will likely be a two to four
year odyssey. So just don't expect instant gratification.

I like the last picture, the dark blonde.
Don't forget about your coconut oil for bleaching!

The black really suits you, bottle blonde can be (not always) a bit generic on account of the chavs and celebrities: I'd like to see you with a chocolate brown or rich red. LOVE your cat, he has the most knowing eyes! :D

Nah, I'm still rooting for the black! You look so magical with black hair, but the blonde looks very natural? It depends on what you think your looks should be.

You come across more powerful in the dark, i prefer the second post you have with the one pic of you. I don't recommend stripping it with bleach to get lighter...i did this once and lost alot of my length then, i only went from black to close to my dark brown natural colour...never again. Sometime's it's nice to have a change, what about one of those lace front wigs if you want to go light, afraid I have'nt tried them though.

I think the dark colour of your hair brings out and shows off your really nice skin. Blond looks good too but I agree with others that I'd worry about the damage of going from dark to light.

The blonde really does suit you but I'm partial to the black. Maybe you could go halfway and just do the top portion blonde, leaving the underside black :D

You're so pretty I think you could wear either and still look gorgeous :) I am leaning towards a preference for the black myself, but I am biased - pale dark-haired beauties are such a rare find around here, so I really adore that look!
