Hello all,

I am wearing a pillbox hat from the 50s I think to a ladies meeting this Tuesday ( we are all supposed to wear funny hats and while it's not that funny- it's mt great-grandmothers and the only hat I have besides a baseball cap). I want to pull the look off. See my profile for pics of my hair- it's curly and close to waist length.

Help me style my hair for the hat!

Hi Atira! I love vintage hats, clothes and handbags, especially from the 1950's (and the 30s). From old pictures and fashion plates I've seen, I think a french twist positioned at the back of your head would work really well. Then the hat can sit on top of your head without being thrown out of balance by your hair. Hope that makes since. You could also do a low chignon down near the nape of your neck. Please post pics! I'd love to see your hat and your hair.

Were your hair down. Try the old hollywood waves (veronica lake's waves). I think you can do the waves without heat with bobby pins. You will look very retro chic. Please post pics.

Please post pictures and instructions of the styles you are mentioning! I don't really know how to do a chignon (what is that?). And no idea how to turn curls into waves...

Hi! I wear dressy hats regularly to church services. I have a couple of pics with hats in my updos album, but my favorite is a snail bun (which is the third pic in that album but without a hat...the link to the thread on the snail bun is in the photo description). I can do that bun low enough for just about any hat, or it can sit higher if the hat sits higher.

HTH!

I agree a low chignon would be pretty, especially with your length--there's a great youtube video by "Isaeto" (I think that's how she spelled it)--she might even be a member here, but I haven't looked yet.

If you want to go reeeaal vintage (I'm a vintage addict, lol, but I understand if you aren't) I think you could do fingerwaves and then pull into a low chignon and it would look oooh so lovely with a pillbox hat. I've got a photo in my album of fingerwaves if you want an idea of what they look like, but since they work with the natural wave/curl pattern of the wearer's hair, your's would likely be much tighter waves. I can give you directions if you decide you like them, just let me know!

Another option would be rag curls; they're comfty and hair friendly, and you could pin them into whatever style you want when dry since they're really resilent. This blog has a great tutorial on them: http://vixenvintage.blogspot.com/ . Love her blog.

And yes; pleasepleaseplease post pics! Like I said, vintage addict.

I would also go with a low chignon. There is an entire thread here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=51019) dedicated to them. Also, I would take it a step further and bag it in a bun net, to keep it neat. Perhaps in a color that is the same as the hat itself.

This is the only way I can wear my hair with a hat. I just can't seem to make it work for me otherwise. I am curious to see what you will decide on. Please post pics !!!
