View Full Version : BF growing out hair, help?

By the title it looks like I'm trying to stop him, but not at all: I'm thrilled!
It's a long story, so I'll just explain the basics: I think he's growing it out for me. And I say "think" because he hasn't directly told me "Look, I'll let my hair grow", just stopped trimming and cutting it. Of course I could see it was growing, and when somebody told him "Whoah, you should cut your hair soon" he just looks at me and says "Sometime."
Yesterday he asked me what he should do next: cut the sides and the back? buzz them and go for a "mushroom" style? I could only say that I think he should something, and trimming the sides and back seemed a good idea. But, really? I don't know. I've grown a pixie twice, but I just let it grow and forgot about it until it was shoulder-length: I had no job to keep, and I had always been the weird one at school, so why bother?
I'm quite sure he's a 3a, at least 2c/3a, with fine hair (probably also iii but I have no way of being sure of this except that it looks a whole lot of hair compared to mine!). He's at a weird growing stage, like a long pixie, that seems to be turning into a strange and still short mullet. Something like that (http://www.onlinehairstylestips.com/wp-content/themes/digg-3-col/images/men-hairstyles.jpg) or that (http://us.123rf.com/400wm/400/400/konstantynov/konstantynov1003/konstantynov100300060/6595153-portrait-of-young-man-with-displeased-hair-in-shirt.jpg) but wavier than the first photo and with more than hair than the second: lots of hair going in all directions (I'm sorry I can't post any photos of it, but he doesn't know I'm posting this and I don't want to share photos of him without permission). Surely, he needs to do something with it, mostly because of his jobs. But I don't know exactly what.
I know there's people here growing/that has grown a pixie out. How did you deal with that stage? What can he do? Is there really a way to make it look decent (for a job) or we may just give up now?
Any help will be appreciated.
(sorry for the long post :S)

My BF is also growing and he has wurly indian type of hair (his mother is singhalese from Skri Lanka). I cut the mullet when the hair was about chin lenght, now it's getting longer he's probably gonna go see a stylist to even the rest out. That's what I would suggest you cut the mullet and wait for the rest.

I just went for length immediately and let it grow. I sucked it up at the lengths in between. But some of the comments I got were indeed hateful and spiteful.

Thanks for the suggestion! I was this close to telling him to go to a stylist, but I'm sure if he has to he'll just go to the barber shop and buzz it all up. I'll have to learn how to trim somebody else's hair if he persists in this journey! :D

I'm sorry you got bad comments, Belisarius :(. I'm sure he would just let if grow if he was at a different job where they wouldn't complain about it, but right now... Well, maybe I can find a job so he can stay home growing it! ;)
So advice me ladies
As you can see, I can't advice you! lol. Good luck in your growing journey, and welcome to LHC!

Would styling it make it look better? Aloe vera gel is a gentle fixing gel which he could use to creat a style and disguise the funky cut. When I was growing out a pixie, I just kinda let it grow...my wurls just made it look, er, wurly, in a mostly intentional way. I'm pretty sure that as soon as his hair gets long enough to curl properly, it'll suddenly look much more intentional.

Although I'm not a man, when I grew out my pixie I just kept trimming up the mullet until I had a bob. A guy though, particularly with wavy/curly hair, would probably want to keep a little more length in the back. Layered cuts look great on guys when they're growing out to shoulder length. So, I think I'd suggest trimming up the back just a bit to get rid of the worst of the mullet, but leave a bit so he doesn't end up with triangle hair! Good luck to the both of you!

Wow. That's got to be hard growing out curly hair. As for me, I just keep trimming the back and try to be creative styling the front. Best of luck.

Thank you! I'm sure it'll be difficult for him, that's why I want to help him as much as possible: don't want him to cut it off so soon!

No need to be a man lol. Thank you for your suggestions! It would be easier if he was a girl, though: I could suggest pins without earning a deathly glare! :p

In fact, today he used some of my mousse and it looked way better than yesterday: less volume, more defined curls. That's a thing to remember!

That's what I was going to say, some gel or mousse to keep it controlled while he is at work. Good luck keeping it on him! :)

How long you 2 want it to be eventually? :)
I like 'longish' styles on men, some cute locks... and there is some really nice styles for this look, really manly even.
It wouldn't look feminine on a girl growing out a crop....but on men it's kinda nice, so maybe you shouldn't bother too much with making it all even/one length?
Im not sure how good that would even look on short lenghts...
Perhaps just trim parts that bother him/you? sometimes bangs, sometimes a bit on sides, or if it gets too long down the neck?
Another thing to definitely worry about is...barbershop...and well stylists for men...
In my experience with DBF...it was so hard to find a good one, who'd know how to make a nice 'longish' style...they are used to just buzzing, in my opinion..
So would be great if you could do it yourself...
DBF now has a ...well decent stylist, but I still trim his bangs and sides a bit time to time..
It's important to cut just tiny bits at first, so there is room for fixing :)
Good luck! It's so sweet that he's growing it!

With thick and curly hair, I think it will look best if he leaves it layered but gets little trims to keep the ends neat. Gel can be very handy in keeping a growing-out cut looking neat. I used to use a generous squeeze - about half a small cotton ball size - rub it between palm and fingers, then finger-comb it through my hair, directing my hair away from my face. It looked best if I then let it do its thing and not touch it. It would have kind of a crunchy texture, but nobody knew that but me.

Like you said, i think the easiest way is to let it grow until it hits shoulder and then trim a bit to even out.
Maybe use some hairbands to get the hair out of the way(im thinking like a football-style), until it gets long enough to put in a pony or a bun at the nape.

If I was him, I'd definitely let it grow: when it's styled, I really like it (more than once in my life I've thought about cutting to that length, also!), but it doesn't look he's feeling this way. And I don't trust the barber he goes to: too buzzing-machine happy, in my opinion. I'll have to learn to trim it, sure!
Thanks for your comment!

That's why I offered him to use my mousse, and if I had gel I'd give it to him, too. Gel generally holds stronger than mousse, doesn't it? Maybe I'll have to buy him some.
Thank you for the tips!

We're looking forward to be able to use some hairbands! I'd say we're still a month or two away if we want to go "Beckham" style: right now I can do multiple mini pigtails all around his head, but nothing he'd ever wear lol. Thank you anyway! :D
I also offered to do some cornrows on him, and he declined: it's a pity, though, because that would make everything easier. His hair is giving me more trouble than mine! lol:D

hello! I'm growing a short pixie cut too! An now i hope that i've passed the "strange mullet style" and the back reaches my shoulders... It's a realy anoying stage, and people often look at me and say:" your haircut is awful! you should go to an hairdresser and cut short again!" thats is, obviously, the oposite of my goal....I use to wear headbands and pull it all back, in hope it doesnt look so weird...but since he is a boy i can only whish good luck!:pegasus:
