View Full Version : I found my secret to getting good bun waves! (pics incl.!)

A lot of days I just throw my hair up in a particular type of bun and don't even comb or brush my hair!! I took my hair down the other evening and got my husband to take a pic of my hair cause we got a new camera. I was curious to see what my hair looked liked cause I hadn't made much attention to it at all for a while. Well, I was quite surprised by the lovely waves! I have a very slight S wave to my hair normally and if I curl my hair with foam rollers or some other way it generally does not look good on me.

Now the bun I do to get those waves is REALLY easy to do. I just have to try and explain how to do it!
1. Hmmmm well first of all pull your hair up like you are going to do a pony tail.
2. Start twisting it clockwise a couple of times then make a kind of loop with the the hair closest to your head.
3. Then wrap the rest of the hair at the loops base which will tighten the bottom of it.
4. Keep wrapping hair around bottom of loop. You will have a bun that is narrow and sticking out. It isn't supposed to coil nicely close to your head.
5. When all hair is coiled around bottom of loop you should have something that kinda looks like a sausage. It will be fatter closer to your head though.
6. I then just grab the 'sausage' and bend it so it is going up ways and lay it against my head and secure it with a large claw clip. You can use a fork, hair stick or flexi-8 to secure it. You can lay the 'sausage' down ways if you like but it seems to sit nicely going up ways.

I feel bad that I don't have pics to explain. I hope this kind of makes sense?? If you try it let me know.

A camera flash makes ones hair look heaps nicer than in reality!!

I do this too! It is sort of a log roll for thinnies and it does give very nice waves (but mine fall out rather fast).

Hey! That's my quick-do, too! Sometimes I pull the loop down over the sausage for a roundish bun.

Your hair is lovely.

I can't understand a single part in the instructions, however "grab the sausage" sure made me laugh. I think the instructional handicapped people like me need step by step photos.

I'm so sorry my instructions aren't clear. I would love to post pics of how I do it but I need my assistant (hubby) to help and take piccies unfortunately he isn't able to right now. Sorry:(

Thank you for the lovely replies everyone. I was pleasantly surprised to hear it is one bun other people use as well:)

Happy hair growing to you all xo

Oh no Lisa, it's not your instructions. I can't follow any instructions on buns/hair, lol. Luckily I noticed that there are others here that need step by step pics too. I am totally inept at following instructions of any kind. I hid at the back of the aerobics class for a whole year before I could do any of the steps.
No matter, lovely bun waves you have. :D

Love your waves and your shine, woooow. Unfortunately I didn't get the instructions (another visual here). But the result is great. How long your waves last?

Ok - I'm going to try and get my assistant to take pics step by step of how to do it!! He's busy today but hopefully sometime this week I can get him to do it then I'll post pics!

I couldn't honestly say how long the waves stay in. I actually haven't left my hair down long enough to see. Ooops! I just took my hair down for a few mins to get the pic then I put it back up! My hair generally annoys me when it's down so I usually where it up all the time. My poor hubby wishes I would wear it down more often but I'm a busy mum and my hair is fragile so I don't:)

Those are great curls! I never seem to get curls or waves from a bun when I am trying for them, but it is good to have a camera handy for when the do appear.

Oh, dear. I am glad it wasn't just my brain that went there.

I'm excited because your hair looks about the same length as mine so I can try this. Thanks.

BTW your hair look very healthy and shiney.

Sounds like a figure 8 bun to me... that's how I do mine. They always give me nice curls, too. :D

I have now been able to take some pics of how I do my bun. I will post the pics very soon.

Here are the step-by-step pic instructions for the bun wave pics I posted recently.

Note: I think for the bun waves I got, my hair was freshly washed that morning, semi-air dried then put up in this particular bun all day.

Excuse the oily gappy hair. I've got it heavily oiled with coconut.

Pretty hair, but mine would not fit in a clip once I had twisted it like that.

Pretty hair, but mine would not fit in a clip once I had twisted it like that.

You could use two clips, one on each side.

Or you could use hairpins or a fork to secure the bun.

looks pretty, but make sure you dont twist too tight with wettish hair.

Oooh! I want to try that. Right now I think I'd need to divide my hair in four sections to make it work even sort of. Methinks I need more hair clips.

Now THAT was an excellent tutorial! My hair is annoyingly layered and thick and not sure it would work for me but for everyone with finer, similar hair to yours, I see it working very nicely.
It's a perfect way to get nice waves and body without using any heat styling.

I'm glad the pic tutorial has been helpful to some! I'm sorry to all you thick haired folk who wouldn't be able to do it. I wouldn't mind a bit of your extra hair please!!:)

By the way, my hair generally doesn't look that nice! It was a fluke day when everything was just working right. Plus the flash on a camera does wonders!!
