My hair is similar length to yours, and I've just learned to do this style. Sometimes I anchor my sock buns with spin pins. There are a couple of sock bun photos in my hairstyle album.

Are you doing a normal sock bun or a fully rolled sock bun?

all the pretty sock buns!!! I was practising mine earlier, but didn't take any pics. It's not particularly good though.. Um, does anybody know of any good guides, or could explain to me how to do a FULLY ROLLED sock bun? I can't do it, but my hair is at a length where I have no choice but to start doing it that way (Boo!/Hooray!)

So THAT'S what those are called! I remember BEGGING my mom to do my hair like that in third grade because another girl in my class wore hers like that all the time... my mom had no idea how to do it. And hey, neither do I! I don't think my hair is long enough yet, though, anyway. :(

You actually don't need very long hair to do a sock bun, and I think you have plenty! I have seen tutorials on youtube where they teach you how to do a sock bun with only shoulder length to APL hair, so you've definitely got enough!

I am no expert though ;) I just experimented with my first sock bun last night lol.

I love sock buns! I find it a lot easier when doing a fully rolled bun to only wrap it around the sock in one spot when I start out and then when I get it rolled up to shoulder length or so I spread out the wrapped hair around the sock so you can't see it. I'm not sure if that made any sense... Anyway, here is mine:

Just yesterday I experimented with a variation of Janis Cortese's "upbraided" (http://www.io.com/%7Ecortese/hair/styling.html#upbraided) updo ending in a sock bun. It was kind of nice because eating up some length with the braid let me do a sock bun without having to do the fully-rolled version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I13J7ArHTkM) and without having long ends to cope with. I liked it. Will try to get a picture the next time I try it.

I just watched the video of the fully-rolled version: OMG, it's beautiful and looks so easy! But there's something I HAVE to ask before I try: is that damaging to the hair? It looks like she's pulling and rubbing at the hair awfully hard... what do you guys think? Am I being a wimp? :o

Teazel, I LOVE yours, that's beautiful. How did you do it?

Thanks! :) That's a kittybun: after you've made the basic sockbun you divide the remaining hair into two sections on either side of the bun and braid them. Then you wrap the braids around the bun and secure with pins.

I'm a little confused by all the comments saying they don't want to do a fully rolled version because of the damage it causes. It really doesn't cause any damage or hurt at all. In fact, it's my favored sleeping style, so I often do it several times a week without any kind of damage (my hair is almost WL, just for reference). Loepsie also has a youtube video about how to get very pretty curls from a fully rolled sock bun, and I do that sometimes, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FV-YO46E8Y&feature=relmfu

I did a fully rolled socked bun using Loepsie's method on youtube when my hair just got passed shoulder at the beginning of the year and loved it! I've never been able to recreate it really and it's harder now with my shorter layers.

This was my hair before the sock bun.

I cant wait till my hair reaches my final goal length and do this one again. I will then either rag curl or braid the excess length.

I'll share my secret with you. I don't use bobby pins for this and my hair is 23", BSL. I use an elastic hair tie, ones without the metal and it holds great. I do the basic pony and put my sock over the pony. I divide the pony into two sections. I lean my head down so the hair stays in place and have my husband tell me if the sock is covered. I then use a elastic hair tie, 3 actually and it holds very well. I hope that helps.

I agree with this. I've been doing a sock bun as a protective style. I live in Cali and the air is often dry and can be breezy. I put my hair up in this style and it really protects the length and ends from the elements. I've just started doing this but I think it is going to be a real hair saver from the elements.

I -LOVE- the one with the bird's nest! How does one do that? I can't for the life of me do a sock bun, even at BSL. There is SO much hair left over and it's layered so I can't figure out how to braid it or what to do with it. I tried the fully rolled one and my hair just slips right out. It's sad cause I reallyreally want a sock bun on my head:(

You just make a pony, put on the doughnut, fold your hair over to cover the doughnut, secure with hair band, then take remaining hair in sections to wrap messily, securing with pins as you go.

How do you all get the fully rolled ones so neat!?! I just tried a few times and I've got hair slipping out all over the place!?

Ok, one more try. I guess it just takes a little practice. I'm going to try the wrapped sock bun tomorrow; my hair was a little damp when I put this one in so I'm going to sleep in it and see what sort of curls I end up with in the morning!

this is my absolute favorite go to style (when I'm not feeling lazy) when I am it's a cinnabun.

Here is a messy bun: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=2842&pictureid=36658

here is a nice neat one, same fork I think:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=2842&pictureid=36661

since I'm ocd (about some things, cleaning ain't one of them) and didn't want the sock to show, I bought some spare hair from Sally's and wrapped the sock with it:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=2842&pictureid=36653

this variation was a half up clipped and then the bun, gives a softer look: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=2842&pictureid=41671

I'll stop now :D

I've never rolled the full length, I pull my hair through the sock bun, then tilt my head forward and wrap the hair around the bun, tucking the ends under, I secure usually with a maximus clip or a hair fork.

Having tried a fully rolled sock bun last night (and sleeping in it), I think I get it. I don't know that it's damaging per se, but it seems like it's somewhat difficult to get the ends to roll nicely and smoothly under the sock. I may have gotten a couple little kinks.
In any case, I unrolled my hair a few minutes ago and brushed it out, and although I had planned on trying dual sock buns today, I really don't feel inclined to roll up my ends again right away.

Also.. I didn't get wonderful curls from the bun, nor will they stay in all day. They were already pretty much on their way out when I decided to brush my hair. :( Oh well.

I've got too much hair for a sock bun and am too fumble fingered to do a rolled bun, so I use an old leg warmer covered with old pantyhose legs. The bun is so big that I can easily stuff the ends under the bun and pin with normal u shaped hairpins. This holds like a rock.
