I'm thinking about working overnight oilings into my routine, possibly weekly. I'm just interested to hear your experiences with them - what oils work best for you, how much do you use, how often, how well it washes out, and what are your results?

I've only done one so far. I used half olive and half coconut oil, applied about a tablespoon to my damp hair, wrapped in a plastic shower cap and went to bed. When I showered in the morning I used white rain to CO, twice. My hair seems to have really liked it, it is super shiny and soft. Also washed out just fine - I was a little worried, but it was clean and very happy.

I use coconut or almond and oil it until it feels oily. I then braid it for sleeping. The next morning I just wash and condition as normal and it feels nice and silky.

I use coconut oil to overnight soak because it is not as oily as other oils. Jojoba works best in my hair, but too messy for me to use overnight. The coconut oil works ok... but I like Jojoba much better

LCHer JoJo put me wise to the benefits of EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive oil)! Wow, the results were sublime! I'm still smiling.

Here's how:

1 Buy some extra virgin oil olive (I used Bertolli)

2 Day before, shampoo hair and dry it thoroughly

3 Put a very small amount of the EVOO in a small container
(I used less than 1/4 of a cup for my thick, 42 inch hair)

4 Put your finger tips in the EVOO and apply to the hair.
Do not overload your hair..just put on enough to make the
hair damp (not dripping!)

5 Cover your head with "cling wrap" (i.e. Saran wrap). It took me 3 sheets

6 I left it in overnight. Detangled the EVOO'd hair, then shampooed and rinsed as usual. The EVOO came out and left no after scent

7 My hair was astounding--- so incredibly silky. Such stupendous "slip". I just about turned cartwheels, the effect was so extraordinary.

2 weeks later, hair is still wonderfully soft and has great slip.

EVOO is everything its cracked up to be! And the slip it gives you is a Godsend when dealing with balky braid strands that sometime tangle. Braiding is a breeze now..where before I had issues with the hair sometimes getting tangled at the bottom(and I detangled a lot while braiding too).

Great stuff!

Madora, that sounds lovely! I'll have to try that next. And the results last 2+ weeks? Wow!

I do this weekly, before one of two shampoos. (Some weeks I only shampoo once, it's a bit ick but really enhances the oiling results).

First I pour it on my finger tips and massage my scalp. Then I do a generous coating from the ear down, and a light coating from the ear up. I comb through with a wide comb, then a fine tooth comb. I find the fine tooth glides through easily, and helps distribute better than a wide tooth. I alternate between Jojoba (my favorite, the closest thing out there to our natural sebum), Moroccan, and Olive Oil. I haven't done the heavy oiling with Coconut yet since I just got into it and so far have just used it as a frizz aid.

I do it on a weekend night before bed so I can take my time washing it out the next day. I've been known to let it sit for 24 hours--I just bun it and throw a silk scarf over it to run errands.

Honestly, this is the number one thing that makes my hair happy, soft and shiny, especially at the ends. Highly recommend!!!

Oh, also....I put an extra dose on my nape hair, since it gets a beating from rubbing on clothing when hair is down. I find this has really improved their rough texture--the consistency between my nape hair and visible/top of my head hair is the same.

My scalp needs the attention.

I use a dye applicator bottle to get the oil on my scalp and do a scalp massage with evoo, co and caster oil. I then wide tooth comb it to the length and add more if needed. shower cap it and cover that with a scarf tied well. I coat with conditioner for thirty minutes before washing out.

I overnight oil with coconut oil at least once a week. Sometimes I dampen it first, then apply lots of oil to the length and braid it. If my ends feel really dry, I put castor oil on them, too. I ususally shampoo it out the following day.

When I first started growing out my hair, I really thought I was going to have to trim about 2" off my ends because they were so dry; after a couple of months of weekly overnight coconut oilings, my ends were as soft as my roots. :)

I often do an overnight oiling before washing, I use coconut oil to help with protein loss in my ends. It seems to be working (not loosing as much colour), but that can also be because I CO... Anyways, it keeps my dry hair moisturised, but not over-moisturised, as cream/water based treatments such as the SMT can do to my hair if left on long.
What works for me is an overnight oiling, followed by washing my hair with a diluted SMT (more water and conditioner, less honey and aloe vera), that it left to sit on my hair for about 20 minutes.

Every time I've done a heavy oiling (hmm, 3 times now), I've noticed a TON of shedding. I was, ahem, *trying* to give myself a scalp massage (I don't know if I was doing it right or not, but it felt good!) while applying the oil (EVOO the 1st time, coconut oil the 2nd time & a combo of EVOO & CO the 3rd time), but my hands kept coming away with strands of hair wrapped around my fingers. Is this normal?

Or, maybe my fingers were wrapped up with hair as my scalp/hair's way of telling me to stop. If I can't move my fingers, I can't massage, right? ;)

I do about 1-2 castor oilings on my scalp every week. I mix the castor oil w/ either avocado or coconut oil and massage it onto my scalp and then smooth more avocado or coconut oil on my length and then leave it on overnight. I usually braid or bun and don't have to cover it with anything. In the morning, I CO-wash w/ honey added. My hair definitely has benefited :)

I've used Nightblooming Triple Moon Annointing Oil, which comes with it's own eyedropper. I use that to apply 3-4 dropperfuls directly to my scalp from hairline to the nape of my neck and then massage that in well, working any excess down the shaft of my hair. Then I use the flat palms method to oil my ends, gradually getting higher up until I'm mostly slightly damp. I put it up in a high bun on the top of my head and head to bed. I CO wash it out sometime the next day. Results: soft, shiny hair!

I use coconut oil, grapseed oil, and peanut oil

grapeseed is my absolute favorite & coconut oil in 2nd (only bc it gets hard when cold & that is kinda annoying, lol)

I agree with others above the overnight oiling has made my once hard rough ends soft and beautiful

Another vote for coconut oil the night before a washing, here! I almost saturate my hair root to end, braid it, and sleep. The next morning, I go about my chores and take care of my toddler until nap time with oily hair, yuck! Then, come nap time aka me time, I get myself in the shower, CWC, and get ready for my day. I really like someone's comment suggesting saran wrap over an oiled head (bunned hair I am presuming) and might try it soon! I bet it would save my pillowcase from ending up so, um, conditioned. Ha!

I like to do an overngiht oiling with coconut oil and a drop of ginger essential oil for scalp circulation! I literally just scoop some out, rub it into the scalp, and down the length, braid it up and then CO wash out in the morning. Works wonders every time!

I love EVOO and another observation since using EVOO my nape hairs have grown long enough to fit into a bun. For the past 4 years they have never grown any longer than say 5" now they are at least 9"!

I use EVOO also, but no saran wrap. I wet the length, put a small amount of EVOO on my hands (just a sheen if I don't intend to wash the next day or a half teaspoon if I have a forthcoming wash) and then smooth on length, especially the ends.

I then put it in a bun and put the end of a cut up nylon around it to prevent my sheets from getting oily then go to sleep.

I get such silky soft hair from this I love, love, love it:)

I use coconut oil, usually the night before wash day. I slather it on my ends and then braid my hair and go to sleep. In the morning, I wash it out (if I've coated my length really heavily, then I try to get more suds down from the top of my head), and voila, nice-looking hair. :)

ETA: with all of this praise of EVOO, though, I'll have to try it out again! :hmm:

^^ my hair used to really hate EVOO and love coconut but then the coconut got to the point it wasn't absorbing just kinda sitting on the top. I find EVOO works much better on damp hair rather than wet or dry.

I've used Argon oil a couple of times but mostly coconut oil the night before washing. Makes my hair shiny and healthy. I think I might try EVOO though as it's coming into winter where I live and my hair's needs change.

A question for the ladies that use EVOO: Have you tried applying to dry hair and then misting? If so, have you noticed any difference between applying to wet hair vs. dry hair?

I detangle then dampen my hair and then microwave a tablespoon or two of coconut oil for about 20 seconds. I put it in my hair from the ears down, then braid it and wrap a plastic bag around my head (glamorous!) then put on my silk sleeping cap. In the morning I wash it out with conditioner then a sulphate free shampoo.
I really want to try other oils but I don't know which ones! Any suggestions?

I do Oiling every other day(too much?) the night before Co washing and I use Castor, Coconut, Avocado, drops of Argan, Almond... Also stop cones, sls, poo...

Noticed less shedding.

I do a light scalp/length oiling twice a week with a blend of castor, EVOO, Rosemary EO and a little Dabur Amla gold, and a heavier one on weekends when I have time to mess around a little more or do an SMT after. I've never had a noticably dry scalp, but my scalp really, really loves oil and I shed much less. I feel like a little oil protects my ends, too.
For daytime, even though I bun my hair most days, I like to put a teeny bit of oil in, but have recently found that my length loves it if I mix a teeny bit of oil and a teeny bit of Aloe Vera gel, they seem to work really well together for me.

I've only done the overnight oiling with coconut oil and loved it. I then co-washed with Trader Joe's Nourish Spa and conditioned with Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose. This is best my coarse, damaged hair can feel. On dry hair not ready to be washed, I use meadowfoam seed oil because I always get too heavy handed with the coconut oil. I oil as much as one can and not look greasy.

@Aurantia...

I did my first EVOO on completely dry hair and no misting. It stayed in overnight and was washed out the next morning. Fabulous stuff. No oily scent, and left my hair soft, with incredible slip, which is a godsend for braiding tasks! Highly recommended!

My method is similar to other posters' methods.

I apply a little over 1 tsp of EVOO to my hair before bed. On my thin hair, this looks quite damp but not dripping. I then put it up in a very secure bun, usually a rolled sock bun, and sleep with a silk scarf tied over my head. I wear the same bun I wore to bed the entire next day. I then CO the oil out in the evening. The oil stays in my hair 24 hours.

EVOO is hands down the best deep treatment for my hair. On damp hair it is just amazing as a leave in, and on dry hair it makes my hair so soft once I CO wash it out. Sometimes I spray my hair so it is damp, load up on the oil, clig wrap it and wear a beanie. I leave it on for at least a day, sometimes many days. It never fails.

@ Aurantia

If your hair needs moisture I'd say it is better to apply oil to damp hair, as the oil creates a barrier so that the moisture can't leave your strands. I've never applied it to dry hair and then misted however.

Before I wash my hair, I do a scalp massage with jojoba oil + essential oils, and I soak my lengths and ends with a mixture of coconut, avocado and olive oil.

I never sleep overnight with oils in my hair, I just can't do it! I do however a couple days a week when I'm not going out will do a 50/50 mix of coconut oil and olive oil (my hair loves this) and put it up in a bun with a hair band and let it soak for hours while I'm busy doing things at home, then at night I'll go to my gym and sit in the sauna for 10-15 minutes at a time. Olive oil is like a glossing treatment for my hair, I think I may like it as much as I like coconut oil... by the way what is "misting?" I actually don't oil my scalp very often, once I did a scalp massage and oiled my scalp with castor and olive oil and I shed like crazy, will never attempt that again.

I try to overnight oil every time I wash my hair (though sometimes that doesn't work out).
I apply a bit of coconut oil to my hair so it's shiny and just starting to separate into clumps, and no more otherwise my CO won't get it out. I then detangle my hair, band my hair in a banded ponytail, add a teensy bit more oil to the tassel, put it underneath my satin sleep cap, and sleep well. In the morning I detangle and CO as usual. My hair really benefits from this. :)

I use EVOO mixed with some castor oil and some EO's. I massage onto my scalp as well and saturate my hair with the oil (dry hair) and braid and leave overnight then use CO to wash it out. I did it weekly for a month or two before and my hair LOVED it...but then slowly I fazed out of it. I want to start doing it again. It did wonders for my hair.

Am working up to an overnight oiling - my hair loves EVOO at the best of time - just worried about my poor pillowcases - I couldn't sleep with anything rustling on my head, like a shower cap, so maybe a soft turban thingie would help - although then I might get too hot, lol!

IanB - your hair is in fabulous condition. :)

I slather on EVOO or Argan oil, give myself a vigorous massage just to get the blood flowing, bun for the night, wake up, braid, swim, CO hair.

I'm sure it'd have more effect if I didn't swim, but it leaves me with unworkable, slippy hair that is tough to braid. Perfect!

Thanks for that - I put an old towel over my pillow to sleep on when I oil - does the job of keeping the pillowcase an oil free zone :)

I use Ojon oil once a week (expensive but worth it-contains "lipids") and put on dry hair for at least 8 hours. I also use coconut oil (the ONLY oil scientifically proven to penatrate) on dry hair when I run out of Ojon.

After doing much research, I am inclined to now "oil" on wet hair, due to the opinion that oil "locks out/in" moisture....sooooo seems a better idea to oil when wet? Thats going against instructions and the grain tho...

Probably twice a week I will go to bed w/ some coconut oil in my hair and then just CO wash it out the next day. I think it really helps w/ shine and moisture retention. I also massage a tiny drop of coconut oil into the length of my hair to de-poof it a bit since I do get a bit of frizz in the humidity being a wurly. A little goes a long way.

Edit: I have never really tried oiling my hair wet....I will have to give it a try.

I'm currently rethinking my routine.

I think with my hair it is best not too oil it too much. I think I'm gonna cut back on the oiling to once every two weeks. But I'd be willing to try Camelia Oil as a leave in once I have the money.

Yesterday I claridyed with Klorane Chamomille shampoo. Then used suave natural as a conditionner (I usually use something WAY heavier) and did a final rinse with chamomille tea, honey and lemon. Today, my hair looks amazing and not limpy at all. So I guess I'm out with the CWC as well.

I put jojoba oil on my face every night and I run my ends in my hair afterwards, there barely any oil left on my ends and that seems to be enough.

I'm not gonna stop the overnight heavy oiling but wait until my hair feels thirsty.

I keep I simple--half a teaspoon or less of EVOO on my hair, focusing on the ends, the night before a shampoo. It's enough so that it's visibly oiled and clumping, but nowhere near dripping. Scrunchy bun on the top of my head, go to sleep, wake up, wash the oil out with a shampoo bar. it makes it so silky and shiny. I try to do this every time I wash with a shampoo bar.

Just last night I coated my hair down with a good bit of Ojon treatment (mostly palm oil) and braided it before going to sleep. I CO'ed it out today with Suave Clarifying conditioner and used 3 drops of argan oil as a leave in. My hair feels AMAZING and looks great. I thought I may hate CO and oil and giving up my cones, but it may turn out to be awesome.

Once every two weeks I do a mix of Night Bloomings hair oil, castor oil, and camellia oil. I apply that with the dropper from Night Blooming's oil, and then I finish it off with an application of Jojoba oil. I then braid my hair, and put an old satin cap on and go to sleep. Sometime later the next day, I take a shower. I totally see new growth with castor oil especially, my hair is finally nearing tailbone!!!! :D:cheese:

I appply a mix of rosemary and lavender oil to my scalp using almond oil as my carrier, then use plain almond oil on the rest of my length. After this I do just a few drops of castor oil on my scalp along with the EO mix. I don't do much of a scalp massage with this, because it makes me shed like crazy if I rub too much. But once it's all in, pretty heavily at that, I braid it and put it under a silk wrap for the night. In the morning I wash it out, and everything seems to come out fine. My braid is also usually pretty soft and shiny the next morning, so I could probably get away with wearing the oiled braid for a day before actually washing out, and might try this on a day when I'm not teaching.

My hair loves all these oils, and it's so silky and shiny. I do have low porrosity hair though, so olive and coconut really don't work well for me. Olive does leave my hair soft, but it also flattens it out real bad. Thus the above mix.

I tried this for the first time, having let my hair get horribly tangled and solved it with a gallon of oil... When I was ready after 6 hours' work and having many oily braids hanging, I thought why not have an overnight oil treatment in same time..

After I washed this away next morning and got it dry, my strands were so easy to solve... They just glided apart from each other (I mean also later same day). I felt how the oil had penetrated so much deeper into my hair when i had kept it in my hair so long. I must make this a habit for my ends (the last 15 cm/6 inches -i don't want oil to my scalp or even close to it, i don't need it there).

Oil-shampoo-method is great but doesn't get the oil as deep as this overnight treatment, I think.

Day before a wash I oil with EVOO until my hair is "damp" with oil, I put mine in an old soap pump and pump it into my hands, applying ends up. I massage a few drops of castor oil with rosemary into my scalp. Bundle everything into my bonnet over night. Before wash I do an EVOO + conditioner deep treatment with a shower cap and foil cap under my bonnet or hoodie and wash as usual in the afternoon/early evening.

I use a rosemary oil blend from The Innate Life 2x/week. I apply it mainly to my scalp, and massage it in for a few minutes, then put my hair in a loose braid under a satin bonnet and go to sleep. I’ve only been doing this for a few months (November-February) but my new growth looks super shiny, I have lots of baby hairs, and my scalp seems to be coping a bit better with the dry winter air.

I try to remember to oil before shampooing. When I do, it's a heavy application of cooking oil (often olive + whatever lighter thing I have in the house) all over the lengths from the shoulders down, braid it off, stuff in a bonnet, and deal with it the next day. I'm open to suggestions on how to not get the shoulders of my pajamas covered in oil while doing this ( ;

One result... I made overnight hot coconut oil treatment and next day i had my hair down all day and even in the evening i had no overpowered tangles but brushed my hair through pretty easily!
I know hair down is not a protective hairstyle, but i like to keep my hair open also because there is no hairs anyhow pulling or wrongly placed in a crunchy or any hair tool.

My scalp is super picky with oils, especially thick oils. When I use something like castor oil or coconut oil overnight (even when diluted with lighter oils) it gets mad at me and gets super itchy, then proceeds to fall out of my head. I can only really do at max 2 hours if I'm oiling my scalp.

My lengths on the other hand, are drier than a desert and need frequent oiling to look presentable. So I think if I were to do an overnight soak, it'd only be on the lengths. I'll have to do an experiment with that soon.

I already use a small amount of EVOO as a pre-poo. I think I will try applying a goodly amount (but not overdoing it) on clean, dry hair, covering with plastic wrap, sleeping with a towel on my pillow and then washing it out the next morning.

Mine is not overnight, more like over-month oil treatment.
I use two drops of oil every day (one drop to my scalp and one drop to my ends, it’s my DIY black seed oil) and massage and fingercomb for a bit. I braid and wear a satin/silk bonnet at night. I bun in my waking hours. This builds up to weekend water-only rinses and monthly (4-6 weeks) shampoo for clarifying when my hair is super greasy. My scalp is just chill and I almost never find split ends. But the closer to my shampoo day, the more shed I experience. I will probably not extend my shampoo that long in warmer months now that spring has arrived.

FWIW last year I looked up oils, and try to use only those which studies say have small enough molecules to penetrate into the hair. I mix 1/3 each coconut, EVOO, and avocado (I can't afford argan), apply fairly heavily from about SL down to the ends, and leave it on for several days. My hair is as "long" as it's ever been (longer in back, shorter on front & sides due to the way I mis-trimmed it). I almost never see breakage or splits. For my hair, masking is for life, since it runs dry and will start breaking maybe within a month if I neglect it. I don't bother with the scalp, as I seem to have enough natural oils there. I'm a coarse 1c-2a. I do the usual no heat/sulfates/cones, though I'm thinking of adding curling & flat iron if I can find a heat shield. I have good beach hair, but I don't live near the beach.

An additional thing my hair seems to love is Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter. Makes it nicely soft. Anyone with my hair type might also want to try it.

How do you make this? 🙂

I read a nice thread about shea butter here and now i'm waiting for my wash day to try it mixed in my conditioner...

Or was the sheabutter readily mixed in the conditioner?...

This has been on my list of things to try and I finally did last night. I used olive oil (I don't think it's EV, just a cheap supermarket one) that I applied with my fingers. I massaged my scalp and coated all the rest of it too. My hair seemed to be able to take in a lot more than I expected, took awhile until it felt properly damp. While applying it, my waves sprung up pretty quickly, it looked more like sea water/rain damp, than oil damp and I actually quite liked the look  I then french braided my hair and went to sleep, didn't cover it with anything, just put an old tshirt on my pillow.
I washed it today, I didn't need any more shampoo than usual, it was pretty easy to get out. Now I'm air drying and can't wait to see if my hair feels any different afterwards.

Ok, so I had a bit of leftover olive oil in the little bowl I used yesterday and I made the mistake of using it as a leave in oil instead of the one I usually use. Now my hair is no longer wet but it sure looks like it still is
I’ll do my best to not wash it sooner than my usual 5 day interval, but I might just have to.
The parts that escaped the over-oiling are feeling nice and soft though.

When I over-oil my hair, I find that saturating it in a silicone-free conditioner for a bit and then rinsing gets rid of extra oil without drying my hair out (The I can wash just my scalp hair without worrying about not getting all the oil out of my lengths). I almost always mix up too much pre-poo oil and end up mixing the left over with my conditioner for my next wash. This way, I am usually able to avoid after-wash oil patches and my extra oils don't totally go to waste

When my hair gets too oily maybe from adding too much oil as leave-in conditioner, i usually just braid my hair and keep shiny braids until next wash and think that now i'm having really long prepoo soak 😁

I think from braids nobody can see the greasiness (and i don't oil my scalp).

Also i might try to brush some cornstarch to my greasy hair, the reduces the greasiness.

What do you put in your blackseed oil? What are the special benefits of blackseed?
I happen to have some blackseed oil..

Oop, sorry for the ambiguity. It's a manufacturer's ingredient already mixed in; the product name is "Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter".

I wonder if you can just buy shea butter.... affordably....

Yes you can. Lots of places online sell tubs of the stuff. Can't remember seeing raw Shea Butter in any normal brick-and-mortar stores though...

Thank you, I followed the conditioner advice and it worked like a charm :) Also that's a great tip for the left over oil, if I have any next time, I'll do that :flower:

Thanks. I will check into it just in case it's the shea butter ingredient in the Maui Moisture which my hair loves so much.

Yes, you can! At least where I live, you can buy it from The Body Shop. I also love the Maui mask, maybe I should give the real stuff a try?

Thanks. I haven't had spare $ for shea butter yet, but it's somewhere on the list.

I ordered mine from bettersheabutter and it was a pretty reasonable price. I melted and mixed with the EVOO I already use and whipped it myself.

Noted. Thanks. Normally I mask with 1/3 each of coconut/evoo/avocado, and sometimes mask with Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter. When $ permits I'll mask with just shea butter at least once to see what it does. My hair really loves something in the Maui mask, and since everything I fall in love with gets discontinued, I'm starting to focus on ingredients rather than just pre-mixes.

Thank you for this formulation! I like that idea, that you get oil out of your hair without drying it and losing all the conditioning effect from oil treatment! I guess i have not understood this before... This issue means a lot to me because my hair is so demanding and i know that oil treatments can be so good for my hair, but for some reason it doesn't always succeed, and it feels like... so close but so far! But now i might have found the right technique and it's same with your technique 🙂
