Anyone know any history on women and hair cutting habits before the 20th century. Im thinking women starting wearing short hair cuts around the early 1930's and 40's .
So before that Im wondering how often women cut there hair, what was the norm ? it seems to me in older time periods women tended to just let their hair grow and seldom trimmed. Since it was put up most of the time in buns and braids.
It must have been way easier to have long healthy hair before we started frying it with curling and flat irons.

Not sure if this helps but there is a chapter in The Tale of Genji about a girl getting her hair trimmed to even it out and clean the ends. The Tale of Genji is considered by many to be the world's first novel and was written by a woman named Murasaki Shikibu in Heian period Japan (11th century).

EDIT: Not sure how often was the norm but the story implied that they just went by necessity. When it started to look less than polished.
