View Full Version : Dyeing my hair purple - advice!

I am considering dyeing parts of my hair purple, which I have done previously. I have bought a tub of Manic Panic dye, but I can’t decide how best to apply it. Previously I dyed the bottom couple of inches of my hair (see sig pic), but my fiancé reckons that wasn’t very obvious, and I should do something more visible. I don’t want to dye all my hair, as I like my natural colour – I just want some sections to be purple. I don’t know whether streaks would be really hard to do myself, or whether they would work very well, as I suspect the colour will be quite dark.
Ideally I want something that is easy to do and that will look good in updos or loose. Any suggestions?

I use manic panic and other funky dyes. I found an awesome forum specifically for this type of dye:

http://www.hairdyeforum.com/index.php

The LHC is great for hair health, etc. but the above forum really is a wealth of info regarding alternative colors. HTH!

You could do the entire lower half of your hair? That way, when you move it will be seen, and when you wear your hair up it will be visible, and have swirls of purple in your up-do? :)

Start collecting hair from your shower plughole and brush, the do some strand tests. Once you know how vibrant the colour is likely to be, it will be easier to decide how much hair you want to dye. Maybe dye the bottom half of your hair this time? Could you get a friend to help with the streaks?

I'm a member here and it's really friendly and offers great advice. We're a lot smaller than LHC though. You can look at thier gallery for inspiration on where to put yoyr colour. A popular thing is flashes which are just fat streaks just under the top layer of hair that can be seen in updos and when hair is down if you have layers.

Thanks for the link! Hadn't occurred to me there might be a forum somewhere for dyeing hair :-)

Ooh, that might work - will think about that one, thanks.

Strand test is a good idea - and I am sure I can rope my fiance into helping me, if I need a spare pair of hands.

The first time I did it, I separated my hair into 8 horizontal panels (from ear to ear basically) and dyed every other panel. My daughter helped me.

The most recent time, I made small braids going down the center back of my head. I left the braid nearest my forehead and the one at my nape alone, and my daughter painted the dye onto all the other braids.

I didn't want all my hair one solid color, either. I wanted ribbons of color. I like the results from both my methods. You can view them in my "fantasy color" album.

You can do random streaks. Around the temples just under the top layer of hair. They will be slightly visable and provide just a pop of color!

You can section off the desired portion of hair, secure the rest. Put saran wrap under that section of hair and put the dye on, wrap saran wrap up and roll it and secure with a hair tie/elastic.

Just a little hint, with strong colours on blonde, bear in mind when you wash a manic panic or other vibrant colour a certain amount washes out... So with a dark purple streak on blonde hair you need to separate it to wash or you will get colour transfer on your blonde.
Not such a big thing when dying your underneath purple, or dying the very ends, but if you dye a fringe streak it would gradually tint the top of your whole head if you washed it all together!

Good luck with your purple!
(I may be biased as mine has been purple pretty much continuously for a year now and it's fab!)

Your hair looks lovely (and that plait photo you have posted in another thread is stunning). Thanks for the info. love the description of "ribbons of color", that is exactly what I want.

Streaks is looking like the way to go, thanks for advice on how to!

Hoping to dye my hair this weekend!

Check out Dementia1013's LHC page. She used to frequent the forums but I haven't seen her in awhile but her public profile is still up. She had the most amazingly beautiful purple hair I've ever seen. She also has a YouTube page, I think under the same name, of her doing some hairstyles with it purple.

I had my hair purple a few times. first started with streaks then did mostly purple but kept black sections in the front (which I liked the most) and then more purple streaks. This may be too much purple for you but you might like it

or you can go with a face framing purple and leave the rest your natural color like the opposite of what I had

Those colors are really inspiring, and now I find myself thinking about doing some streaks that would come out nicely in an updo (thanks for enabling:D)

Maybe this is a silly question since I get the overall impression that it will wash out, but I would really like confirmation that it really does wash out please?

My hair is currently hot pink. And I use Pravana Colorsilk Vivids, which is an amazzzzing dye range! They're vibrant and long-lasting. I think it would work well with non-bleached hair.

They really do. Especially on virgin hair. Depending on your wash routine, it might take pretty long or not so long :)

For the streaks. This time my friend put the streaks into little plastic bags we secured with rubber bands. That made it a bit easier. See the ugly picture (http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww203/quallest/ca51ca01.jpg) we took of it.

Look at my album for how I have my hair streaked with purple. I got my temples done and a chunk of my under layer. When I braid, twist or flip, I end up with very pretty purple swirls. It is quite classy and understated in a very fashionable way to the point I never got in trouble for it at work.... and they have a 'no unnatural hair color' clause in the dress code.

On the contrary, I've been complimented over it by supervisors.

I can't wait to see it! I LOVE crazy colored hair. :p I am planning on experimenting with some manic panic very soon myself. I want blue but i am not sure it would show up very good on my hair color. I am gonna try it tho! Pics when you do it please!

Well, the dyeing is done! Took me and my fiance a while to work out the best way to do it: clipping the hair I didn't want to dye out of the way and covering it in conditioner, then dyeing the rest in sections before wrapping them up in clingfilm and foil.
We did streaks, mostly in the underneath part of my hair or towards the back. That means it is not very visible from the front, if my hair is up, so hopefully my workplace won't mind it!

The colour looks different under natural light, artificial light and flash - it is intriguing.

This is just after the hair was dyed. Taken indoors, with flash.

This one was taken today, under more natural light (and without flash). My hair was up in a cinnabun, as we were heading out. Sadly I didn't have time to take a photo of my hair down under natural light today - hopefully I will manage to tomorrow!

You can always do peeka boo highlights.
I bleached in some last summer.
I did 7 in total. 3 in the back, 2 on each side in the front.
Here is a pic of them last year.

Or if you have bangs, you could just dye those.

EDIT: Whoops, I guess I should have read past the first page. I love the way it turned out.

Sorry for some reason I couldn't get the quotes right. Thank you for the info! My hair is not virgin but has henna and henndigo in it, and part of it still has (invisible) chemical dye but my hair is quite dark. If I can get my hands on this stuff I'm gonna try it out.;)

I currently have a blue panel on the front, in my my bangs. Streaks are terribly difficult if you can pin back the rest of your hair, but the further back it will be more difficult. I am not a big fan of Manic Panic, seems to bleed A LOT--but the colors are lovely. I have had better luck with color saturation and longevity with Special Effects.

:agape: Wow. That is absolutely gorgeous. For the first time in my entire life (despite much urging, especially in my teenage years!) you've actually made me consider dying my hair!

Please do keep us updated with how well it washes and how long it takes to fade. :flower:

Well, it has been almost a month now (3 and a half weeks), so I thought an update was in order. The purple has faded somewhat, but it is still there. It has gone a little more pink, and much lighter. The first couple of times I washed my hair some dye did come out (although I only shampoo the scalp, so it didn't affect the length of the hair). I wash my hair every 2-3 days, so it has been around 8 washes.

I have put more pictures in my album of how it is doing, but this is how it was today (sorry, picture is slightly overexposed and bun is very messy!)
