So I get the jist of how this is done, but has anyone ever done one of these hairstyles? Anyone willing to recreate and/or share the steps? What would you use for the "dots", rubber bands? some kind of beads?

There was a thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=68869&highlight=smocking) on this kind of hair smocking recently.

I agree that it's very pretty, and shockingly easy to do.

There is no way that is easy to do, unless it is easy doing it on someone else! :) I have tried and failed to do hair smocking many times. Perhaps it's because I am wrestling with tiny strands of 48" long hair, I don't know. I'm guessing it would be easier on shorter hair.

Well, there's your problem right there....:D

Misstwist, thanks for the link!

Personally, I would only try this with very small claw clips. Pulling hair through rubber bands repeatedly would be very damaging, I think, not to mention taking it out again.

Oh, those kinds of hairstyles are so pretty! There are actually a couple of tutorials on YouTube from LaDollyVita33. I absolutely adore her channel because she has so many beautiful hairstyle tutorials.

I'd love to try a style like this, but I need to find some nice-looking mini-clippies first as I hate those silicone elastics. They do not get along with my fine hair.

I think someone in the other thread mentioned using thread or string. Those seem a bit slippery to me, but I've been wondering if something like artificial sinew or waxed thread might work, then just snip it out (carefully!) later.

It sure turns out pretty. I might have to try it out one day...

I have done a very similar style before. On another person.
Sadly, I cannot do it on my own :(

Thanks Miss Manda for saying such nice things about my channel! I had no idea that this was called "hair smocking!" I've tagged my videos with that now, because I'd been previously calling that style a "hair veil."

Anyway, small clips seem like a WAY better idea! The elastics aren't hard to get in, but honestly they did suck to take out. Actually I haven't worn my hair like that in a while just because the elastics hurt and tear when they come out!

I'm rather liking the artificial sinew idea. That or tiny elastics could be snipped out (carefully, yes).

I think this style is awesome! (at least when the bands dont pose problems)
It can be soooo versatile.
For example, for my brothers Graduation next week, I will be wearing this style as a veil over french milkbraids.
(picture will of course be posted :D )

A long time ago in a high school far away I did something kind of like this to a friend. I would recommend getting a second pair of hands, and lots of time. I used the little rubber bands that my orthodontist used for strapping my jaws together.

We very carefully cut them out when the friend was done with the hair style, but I'm sure you could remove them other ways.

I do this style on my daughter for parties and so on. In fact she recognized it when we watched that episode of merlin.
I got the idea from a thread here a few years ago.
It doesn't take all that long to do and has the advantage of keeping her hair out of her face but, as other people have said, the little elastics are a pain to use, especially to take out. I tried with mini claw clips but they were a bit too big for her very fine hair. I want to try some sort of twist or braid at each join.

I tried it on myself, but gave up in frustration. I'm sure it's possible, but I don't have the patience
