What is this bun called?

I came upon this bun on my own, by accident, but I know it must have a name. This is what I do:

Gather all the hair in a pony tail (no tie, just in my hand)

Wrap all hair around my hand one wrap.

All hair still hanging down gets wrapped around the base of the pony.

Spread the loop of hair thats around my hand slighty and push all the wrapped hair into the middle of the loop.

So what is this bun?

I have questions! So many questions...and there's so many places for them to be answered here :) I love it. I had some of these in different posts (The "How are you wearing your hair today" (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=134) one), but they seem to deserve to be here, so I cut and pasted...

The "Strange Feral bun"
I know this bun must have a name, too. It's my "strange feral bun" back from my pre-LHC days when I knew nothing about buns and just made up my own so my hair...was out of my HAIR *giggles*" I think it's probably a real hairstyle (parallel evolution), but I haven't found it in the HairStyle Thesaurus yet. It's kind of a crochet thing with two loops...


Ponytail the hair (no ponytail holder required).
Wrap hair up and around right palm, leaving the thumb out.
Twist down and grab tail with the middle finger of the right hand.
Pull tail through about 1"? (until your finger can poke through loop and touch base of pony) while using left hand to grab the left edge of the knot, pulling it left until you can put a finger in the loop and touch the base of pony. So the loop goes right and the left side goes to the left.
Stick left thumb in left loop.
Stick left pointer finger in right loop (so you can hold it in place and do the next step)
Stick hairstick through the right loop first and then the left loop (I guess you should grab some scalp hair? with it).
Then curl the tail under the whole thing, cinnamon roll style and you're done



So what bun is that? I was thinking it was maybe a Celtic Knot earlier on in the month, but now I'm thinking it's not that close...I'm pretty sure it has to be something that's already here.

It's this Hairstyle with hairstick yourself|tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNYTYxqbPTY) I'd really like to know what it's called. It's pretty nice to wear without wrapping the ends, too...as a "shorter ponytail" kind of thing?

Not to derail from Aithne's question, but I have never understood the distinction between these two! I always do what I think is a nautilus, but what others call a LWB. Not to derail from Aithne's question, but I have never understood the distinction between these two! I always do what I think is a nautilus, but what others call a LWB. Nautilus wraps down over the hand and twists the loop at the start, Lazy Wrap wraps the loop up over the hand and no twist.

Wow! You really know your buns :) The Neoma Knot (a user name? It's Greek! My middle name is Greek :) ) is exactly what I've been doing (except it looks much neater on that lady.). The Pha bun (must be someone's name, too? I wonder how all these buns get their name.)

Hehe, you give me far too much credit - I know the Neoma Knot because it's the first stick bun I could get to hold, and recalled the Pha because I've never quite got the hang of it :lol:

Neoma is a member, still posts occasionally. I don't quite know how the Pha bun was named, though it is possible to search the member list to see if anyone has that username.

Thank you again for answering my questions :) It's cool that so many people in this forum make up updos! I'm having a lot of fun learning new ones (thank you, everybody). It's a nice distraction from the mess that's the rest of the world at the moment...

Thank you :) Most of my orchids are that kind. I don't know how to say it (or spell it, either) but I know it means butterfly. I guess most of the buns in the Hairstyle Thesaurus (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=145554)must have been created by members...that's so really cool :) I thought they were all traditional ones or something before this thread.
