View Full Version : How has LHC Changed your views on Length?

Just as the title says, i wanted to know how LHC has affected everybody's views on others hair as well as their own. I know i've only been using the site for maybe 3 weeks and find that the original goal i had (waist) is not long enough anymore, and when i see anybody with it, i think of that as long, and hip+ as very long. When i see anything above waist i think of it more as medium even though in the "real world" if you can call it that >.> anything past shoulder length is considered long, and anything below breast level is not only seen as unfashionable but also referred to as "very long". Tell me what YOU think!

I agree, I used to think BSL was unfathomably long for me, but now I'm just a couple of inches away. My goal coming here was waist too but now it's at least tailbone! Whenever I tell friends and family about my long hair goals they almost cringe and say it's too long.

For me, long is past classic. Anything above that is either medium or short.
I didn't really have a goal for length before coming here, but now I want to grow it to floor if I can and maybe even longer!
I haven't told anyone IRL about this goal yet though. :D

There are a few threads floating around that addressed this very question. Only, I'm too lazy to go looking for them, so I suppose you get a "create a duplicate thread without a snarky remark from me" free pass :D

I don't think it has changed my general veiw of long hair, the kind of people I know (mostly old fashioned crafty types and re-enactors) often have longer than average hair. I also lived with a long hair (panth) and my DBF has long hair, so I was pretty used to it. I think what the LHC has done is convinced me that I can grow my own fine hair out and that provided I treat it nicely it should be pretty and in reasonable condition.

When I first came here I thought that BSL was long enough & was my goal.
But after hitting BSL my hair didn't feel very long, so I aimed for waist length.
Then getting to waist my hair didn't feel very long, so now my new goal is hip length.
I am doing it slowly though & trimming or dusting the ends of my hair off monthly on the new moon to help thicken up the ends.

Heh heh. Yeah. I actually used to think my hair was long at shoulder length.

I still think so on other people.

Length - well, I see things differently. I think the other day I described someone as having "short" hair and I received a complete WTF? That girl has *long* hair, dude, are you *blind*? Response.

Because it wasn't even APL! Anything above APL counts as short in my head now, and I feel you aren't *really* medium length till you hit BSL+ (which means my hair still feels short to me...:violin:) Medium length lasts until you're past waist and heading to hip, and you have long hair if it's at hip. Superlong starts at knee. :D

But, more than that, I find myself currently amazed at the beauty of natural-coloured, healthy hair (of whatever length). It's so damn rare, I always gasp whenever I see it.

Yup, my views have changed pretty much the same as yours! When I started on LHC I wanted waist length hair, because I saw waist as long! Now I see waist as long but only ho-hum long lol. Now I see hip+ as long hair. BSL to me just looks "medium" length now, and my hair that's nearly waist seems dreadfully short!

My sister was telling me the other day she'd been Googling hairstyles for "medium" length hair, which is what she'd considered her hair, but after looking at the styles, she discovered she had "long" hair by conventional standards, even though it wasn't quite BSL (which both of us think of as medium rather than long!)

To me, you can't have long hair if you can grow it there in a year ;) Long hair is hair that takes some commitment!

I was already at terminal when I found LHC, and I live where there are many many people with long hair (my first high heel length hair (past floor) sighting was before I joined LHC), so my mind was already tuned to hair length qualifiers more like LHC than otherwise.

I started off wanting BSL, but as I stayed here longer my goal got changed to waist then hip and later tailbone before stopping at classic.

But after a length shot taken last night, my DH gave me a reality check. I think my hair is growing too fast for people to adjust to (especially since I have had short hair all my life). Everyone seems to think I should stop here :o I guess my hair growing obsession was getting way out of hand so I will probably take it slow from here and take my time to decide on a final goal length.

I guess what your view on hair length is all edpendant on what you see around you, if where you live there are lots of long haired people then of course your goign to see it in relation to that and I think that is what LHC does, it makes what those outside of this "community" see as long seem normal as we see a lot more longer lengths than they do. As with everything its relative and has to be seen in context, most men in England will find that even before their hair reaches shoulder length they are considered as longhaired but at the same time most would agree a woman with a shoulder length bob would be seen as short haired.
In my opinion though medium is BSL to waist, above that is short and below is long.

I have started to appreciate long hair that is well taken care of. One of the interesting things I've found about the area I live in is that guys with long hair tend to have healthier hair. Girls seem to have fairly long hair here (BSL-waist in not uncommon), but it tends to be more damaged from what I've seen. Not always the case, though!

Where I live, I rarely see people with hair past BSL, so I considered BSL length hair very long. Since I started lurking here and on other hair sites, I now consider this to be quite short. It's not that I don't like other (shorter) hairdo's but I just prefer longer hairstyles (but it must fit the person also).

I used to think waist was long, but at best, I now think of it as medium long. My goal was waist....but I'm tempted to try hip. That would be cool. I had NO idea how long it would take to get there either. When I first grew to waist, I was pregnant, and it went from shoulder to waist in less than 9 months. (no trims either). Now, it is painfully slow trying to get there again (lots of trims though).

I have noticed the same think Krissykins, mens long hair does generally seem to look healthier, I guess they don't do as many fancy updo's or use as much product as the average female.

Yes, it's most definitely changed. At first my goal was waist, and it still is my goal as of right now, but now I"m aiming for hip. Most girls around WI tend to have shorter ish hair. It's considered long if it's BSL. Which I consider medium length. I talked to a girl with BSL hair yesterday and asked if she'd go longer. "I don't think so. I don't like it rubbing against the chair." lol, to me that's be amazing!

Not really. I was homeschooled and for whatever reason I remember a lot of longhaired, undyed women being around. Including my mom. Maybe homeschooling and long hair both tend to attract religious conservatives and hippies. Or just people too poor to afford a trip to SuperCuts. ;)

Anyway, out in the more mainstream world, I do consider BSL "long," mostly because it's not a length most people can just casually get to after they tire of a short trendy cut.

BSL after a short cut usually takes some thought and commitment, and at least one awkward phase, to reach.

Where I come from BSL is not rare or unfashioned, but it is considered long. I wanted hip length hair before, because I thought it would be long enough and still practical.
Since I joined LHC, I only hope terminal length doesn't get to me before knee.
I still think BSL is the cute, perfect princess length. On other people :D

Let's just say people IRL think my categories of "long" and "very long" hair are a bit... absurd? ;)

When I started growing out my hair, BSL was "long" (which was off-standard to some already, who consider shoulder length "long") and I had no idea you could grow your hair to classic and beyond. Hip length was the longest I had seen.
Then, I started reading about haircare on the internet, and suddenly "long" hair needed to be waist length at minimum :D I don't consider BSL hair "long" anymore, it's more like "starting to look long". Anything longer than mid-butt length is "very long" to me, and hair that's at least thigh-length can only be described as awe-inspiring :)

It's funny, my views of "long" hair have actually changed in the opposite direction: I used to think that everyone who had hair shorter than me (most people) had short hair and used to go through hairstyling magazines for "very long hair" just for laughs, but now seeing all you wonderful people working so hard for waist or TBL and cheering you on, I start to think it's impressive to see Waist Length on someone on the street, thinking how much she(or he) must have worked for that. I'm a lot more charitable with my definition of 'long' now.

I have changed my mind about what kind of hair should be long. Thick, thin, straight, curly...all types can reach amazing lengths and be beautiful. It just depends on how one cares for it.
I hope that when I get my training and certification done in cosmetology, I can help those with long hair care for and maintain their locks. I am not going to be the type of hairdresser that is scissor happy!

It doesn't really have changed the way I look at hair, as in, what I used to think was long, is still long to me now. I still think BSL is really long (TBL, waist etc. is still VERY VERY long), even APL is long to me! But hey, I have a pixie, so basically everything longer than my hair feels long to me :P

But, I do notice hair a lot more now. As in, when someone has waist length hair, for instance, I immediately notice and think 'hey! that's waist/tbl/hip/bsl/whatever'. I do find longer hair faster now, although that sounds odd haha. I notice it faster! And I always think in terms of LHC, like APL/BSL, 1c, f/m etc. :P I just analyze everybody's hair more now! :P

The LHC effect strikes again. :p With so many beautiful, amazingly long heads of hair frequenting the forum, I often find myself thinking my hair's way too short (it's currently two inches from reaching hip). If I spent time on a forum on how to care specifically for buzzcuts, I'd probably think differently about whether my hair was long or not. ;)

I agree with aaall of that. Except I don't have a pixie at the moment. lol.

I also notice gradations of "long." Like waist vs. hip vs. tailbone vs butt-crack-length? before LHC, that all would have murkily been noted as "long" and someone with waist-length hair could have gained or lost four inches overnight without attracting my attention. :p

I think my BSL-to-waist hair is medium-ish, so any hair shorter than mine I think of as being short. Perfect example, at lunch with friends yesterday one had just got a new cut and everyone said that it's "still really long." But it was barely APL.

I still think of waist as long hair. It *is* long hair if you look at the bellcurve of hair lengths.

That said, I've grown to appreciate even longer hair since joining LHC. I used to think anything beyond waist was unseemly and strange, now I think it is beautiful and unique and have revised my goals accordingly. We'll see though. It's entirely likely I may grow it long only to find I don't actually like my hair beyond BSL/MBL.

Time will tell!

I found LHC because the last time my hair hit waist length... I didn't know how to style it... so I cut 6-8" off my hair. Now that I'm back at waist, I have a handful of hairstyles to wear (no longer just a ponytail) and I'm going to see if I can grow my hair to classic.
I've always considered my hair "extra-long," but no more. Here at LHC, my hair seems to be on the shorter side!! Maybe it's because I now know the names of the lengths longer than waist.
Lastly, LHC has given me new tools in which to care for my hair. I love coconut oil, I'm cone-free, and my hair is shiny without any silicones!

I must say that in the week or so since I found this site, I have certainly had my impression of hair (and its capabilities) changed.

A few weeks ago, my sisters were telling me how "long" my hair was getting, and I was starting to agree. I'm APL now, but I've been hip-length before and I remember at the TIME thinking it wasn't THAT long... at least on me. So now APL doesn't seem like anything, and compared to what I see on LHC, it's really nothing. :(

After hanging around here, I have now decided that my previous goal of BSL is entirely too short, and I want to go to tail-bone if I can.

I actually thought about this perception change earlier today when I was at an event and noticing people's hair. The only real hair I remember from today (and I'm in TX so the ladies here like their hair longer than some places) was a lady with waist-length hair. I distinctly remember thinking, "Wow, it's down to her waist... and it doesn't even seem THAT long... I could go longer than THAT..."

I would consider BSL the beginning of "long" and tail-bone or longer would be "very long" etc.

MissManda
May 7th, 2011, 09:08 PM
I think having what our culture deems as having "very long hair" and/or seeing others with said hair lengths can really alter one's definition of "long." I have a friend who cut her butt-length hair to between APL and BSL and she considers her hair to be "medium" length.

My warped mind perceives hair lengths like this:

Very short - Chin and shorter
Short - Chin to APL
Medium - APL to Hip
Long - Hip to Knee
Very long - Longer than knee

IcarusBride
May 7th, 2011, 10:50 PM
I definitely agree! My goal is mid-thigh, but I am pretty sure with my horribly weak and thin/fine hair, I will be lucky if I can get to tailbone without it looking bad. Pre-LHC I would have thought being able to grow tailbone length hair is the most incredible nearly impossible feat, but now I feel that I have been horribly cursed with my hair type LOL!

I do the same thing!!! I look at a girl with maybe a little past bsl or even at bsl and think oh her hair is around medium maybe, and then whoever i am with at the time will look at me like i'm nuts!!

I think health of hair aside from being important can also be a factor of how long we perceive their hair to be. I saw a gorgeous columbian girl the other day with hair that was maybe three at most away from waist but it didn't look very healthy and i think made it look shorter, but when a girl with the same length of hair came in, only hers was taken care of, i couldn't help but think that hers was so amazing and wonderful

I used to think waist was long, but at best, I now think of it as medium long. My goal was waist....but I'm tempted to try hip. That would be cool. I have heard that pregnancies can make your hair grow like a weed, especially when prenatal vitamins are taken because it pushes all the hairs into the anagen phase, and some people take pre-natals to help their hair grow even if they aren't pregnant. But after the baby has been delivered the hair returns to normal, but seems to be slowed down a bit more while it's trying to find it's equilibrium

Yes, it's most definitely changed. At first my goal was waist, and it still is my goal as of right now, but now I"m aiming for hip. Most girls around WI tend to have shorter ish hair. Oh i love the feeling of accidentally leaning back on my hair. It makes me feel like i've accomplished something, to have been able to grow it out that long i guess? When i was little i could sit on it! haha

Grow that hair to classic! And post pics when you do ;) One of my favorite things about LHC Is all the advice you can find on taking care of your hair, and the wonderful updo's! It is almost inspiring enough to make me play with my own and see if i can come up with any original updo's!

When my hair was an inch above BSL my senior year of high school, i cut it into a chin length angled bob. During the bob's grow out phase (i NEVER EVER get my hair cut and kinda just let it grow out and do it's thing) when it grew to maybe shoulder length i was complaining to my friend about my hair being so short still and that i didn't think it looked good on me, and i missed my hair.. she said "Yeah i don't like it medium like that, i think you look better with either really short or really long".. I was in shock that she thought my hair was really long before i cut it! I never considered that length to be really long. I guess because i knew what really long was since i had it as a child.

Up until my junior year of high school my hair was bsl and I thought it was long. Then I cut it to chin and it felt really short. Its felt short since. Even though I'm (juuuuust barely) hitting waist, it feels just as short to me as the chin length bob, I never regained that feeling of "long hair" that I had my entire life. Now my scale is is something like this (although I'm more critical of my own length than others):

VERY short: buzz to pixie
short: chin to APL
medium: BSL to waist
long: hip to classic
VERY long: thigh +

Around here (a little liberal artsy eco-friendly hippie college) bsl-waist is the norm for women.

Years before LHC I thought waist length hair was "very long". When I joined I realized that I was actually tow inches past waist. :) However, I still didn't feel long. I wanted to reach tbl. Then I started to check profiles on LHC. I used to think that knee-length and beyond only existed in fairy tales (seriously). I realized that it was wrong. And now, my ultimate goal is classic, and long hair for me is longer than tbl. Which means, that I am still not a longhair... :p

Hasn't really changed my views but I've always had a pretty warped view of hair length compared to other people. At the moment my hair is somewhere between APL and BSL which I still consider 'short'. Once past BSL I'll probably start thinking of it as mid length and then when I pass waist I'll finally allow myself to think of it as 'long'.

Oddly I don't necessarily apply these guidelines to other people - I have one friend who I always think of as having long hair but the other day I realised that she's not much past BSL. Maybe it's because she's not very tall so it looks longer on her :p

I used to feel like anything above chin length = short, anything between chin and APL = medium, BSL+ = long

Now it's more like, anything above APL = short, APL to Waist - medium and Hip + = long xD

Before joining LHC MY target was to get my hair length back i had when I was a teenager (between BSL and WL) but now I thikn i'd like to go as far as Hip or even classic (as long as the condition of the hair was good). I also notice a lot of people in my area have past waist length hair and i've seen several walk past or into the shop i work who have knee/ankle length hair.

Well I joined LHC in April and until then, I was one of those ppl who though below shoulder qualified as really long. My dear sister-in-law was always like "you call your hair long?! that's not long" and I was like "you're such a hick" cuz she'd never go above or below APL. Now, I'm not even telling her how long I want my hair cuz her jaw would just drop!

Just a month ago, my goal was APL, now it's BSL cuz that's still so far away for me. But ultimately, I would love hip or even tailbone. I think those lengths are beautiful and very figure/silhouette flattering. Just really sexy. I think (and always have thought) that between shoulder and APL doesn't really change a person's look that much. And I generally don't love those lengths. You can't quite do anything with them, and at the same time, they may not be as "stylish" as shorter, chin length bobs and pixies. Which is why I'd always get bored and cut at APL.

Mind you, and plz plz don't be offended anyone, I'm just answering the thread question, I still find hair that covers your butt and beyond is a little ... what's the word ... discomforting. Think Samara from The Ring...

But hey I've already gone from APL as my goal to TBL, in less than 2 months. So I'm obviously easily influenced!

Oh and a funny related remark: yesterday I was at the Body Shop and the sales girl was trying to sell me this hair oil and she said she used it all the time and her hair was really healthy. It was BSL put up in a bun. And she goes, "I can take it down and show it to you, if you're not creeped out by ppl's long hair" ... so yeah, I guess a lot of mainstream ppl find super-long hair to be not so hot.

I used to think BSL was long! Even APL was still long! But now after closely looking and comparing, i feel long for me is at hip on down and it gets better after that :D So when my hair hit BSL once in November i was so surprised and it felt long all of a sudden. I guess it's because i'm not used to seeing such lengths.

I joined LHC because I was looking for ways to keep my destroyed hair in fairly good shape before chopping it off. My hair is currently almost waist length, with new growth to my shoulders. I am preparing myself mentally for a cut - off with the damage! :D I plan however on growing my new hair long, at least to BSL. Before LHC I planned on keeping it short (a bob). Now that I've learned how hassle-free long hair is, I'll probably never consider going short again.

I use to think Updos were lazy and simple
I use to think long hair (classic) was lazy and simple for those that did not want to cut their hair

Boy was I beyond wrong, I was plain ignorant. LHC has taught me so much about the efforts put into long hair and updos.

Everything shorter than Waist length is short in my opinion
Before I thought BSL or MBL were long now I consider them average to short

When I see someone with long hair, I really notice it, and I appreciate it more because I understand the time and effort it takes.

I've also started to notice how little people have hair even at bsl length.

It changed my perception of what is truly "long" and made me realize that it is possible to have tailbone+ healthy hair, even if it isn't very common.

I remember being proud of my "long hair" and having people compliment me on it. I even got some, "wow, your hair is long" comments from strangers. It wasn't quite waist at its longest! lol
I did think I had long hair back then, but I have always known people with longer hair, so I never got too cocky :)

Fairlight63, I know what you mean about long. My goal (from pixie) was the unbelievably long BSL. I got there - then had the "thing" with DH & cut back to APL. Well, now I'm not sure, but if it's "longish" I'm thinking it might as well be long! So growing again. I always tie it back & up somehow so what does it matter how long it is. And the longer it is the better bun, etc. it makes. Of course, shorter hair is easier to wash. But there is a great pleasure in seeing & feeling it down.

My own hair goals has not changed much, exept for that I am actually Considering waist lenght now, not "just" BSL. That seemed like waay to long for me before (both getting it there healthily and maintaining it styled), but now I know better ;)

I have also learned to appreciate long, healthy and also natural hair. I think very long hair is beautiful =)

Absolutely. For example, I remember watching A Walk to Remember years ago and thinking, "wow Mandy Moore's hair is looong!"- think the scene where she sings a special in the school play. I giggled while watching the movie yesterday because her hair is shorter than mine is currently!

Well my views on length haven't changed THAT much, because I never thought that APL was long, for example... or even BSL for that matter. To me it had to be waist to be long. But I've sort of changed my perception on "really long" and I've changed my hair goals from waist (which now doesn't feel very long to me) to hip... although that will probably change when I'm closer to hip. I'm really not far from waist now (probably only 1" when my hair's stretched) but yeah... even growing 1" my hair will not be anywhere near long enough!

One thing I realised LHC has done, is it's made me study ponytail circs more lol. I mean... I never really noticed them before, but now I see people's hair in ponytails and try and estimate how thick it is! I saw one lady today with probably APL hair in a ponytail and though "hmm I think she might even be an i" and another I was speculating on whether she was a ii or a iii. LOL.

LHC has made me realize that it isn't about your age, hair color, or if it is strait or curly, thick or thin. If long hair makes you happy and feel beautiful, then who cares what anyone else thinks!

When I see someone with long hair, I really notice it, and I appreciate it more because I understand the time and effort it takes.

My experience is exactly the opposite. I have wavy hair that gets curly when short. When my hair was short, it took me a lot more time and effort to make it look decent (meaning not make me resemble a poodle) :D Why it never before occurred to me to just let it grow long is beyond me.

Now that it's long, all i do is wash/condition, air dry and use some nice sticks or a slide barrette.

The LHC effect strikes again. :p With so many beautiful, amazingly long heads of hair frequenting the forum, I often find myself thinking my hair's way too short (it's currently two inches from reaching hip). If I spent time on a forum on how to care specifically for buzzcuts, I'd probably think differently about whether my hair was long or not. ;)

I am RIGHT with you, pepperminttea. I'm Classic as of 2 in the morning the night between Nov 26 and 27 (I sat on the tips of my hair for the first time ever while browsing the Tailbone to Classic thread, ironically enough, and that's what I'm counting as my first Classic experience. I attribute the last few microlengths to the forum's incredibly strong combined "let's grow our hair together!" vibe) and after looking at all the gorgeous, and very long, hair on LHC, I feel my hair won't be anywhere near long enough until it's fingertip length.

That's awkward for me, because I'm having a hard time fitting my hair into the 40's styles I have to assume for WWII reenacting (my hair adapts itself admirably to all the other periods I reenact, but Classic is starting to put a strain on my Victory Rolls!) It's turning into a fight of priorities.

I have never really thought about my length too much.. I have just known that I like having long hair. I tend to get a little jealous of my BFF because each time I think, "Oh! My hair has really gotten long!".. I Skype with her and see how long HER hair has gotten. LOL.

Oh, right. How has LHC changed my views? Well.. I was never really interested in growing my hair to my butt or anything, but now I am getting curious to see how long my hair will grow!
And I'm paying more attention to other people's hair (and their hair toys).

It has definitely change my perception of long hair. It takes waist length hair to really make me stand up and take notice. Anything shorter than that is not really truly long hair. Call it medium length but not long hair. As a result I have been increasing my goal length. I started with shoulder length but then realize you can't do a whole lot with shoulder length hair. Now my goal is waist and if I like it go even longer.

Pre LHC, I considered long hair to start at BSL, waist was long, hip was really long, classic was "WTH?" long!

Within a few days/weeks of joining, I realized my initial goal of waist length hair was really not *that* long, and I want hair longer than I've ever had it before in my life, so I'm aiming for either hip or tailbone! I'll grow to tailbone and see if I feel that is too long for me, then cut back to hip or keep it at tailbone.

And pre and post LHC, I considered any hair APL and up to be short, and from a bit beyond APL to just before BSL medium-ish.

I finally reached my goal and I thought about trimming off an inch. I absentmindedly was talking to the naughty mess about how it would feel if I trimmed an inch off of it, at work and one of my co-workers (whom is bald) told me to shave my head or that he'll happily cut it all off for me.

For some odd reason the mess decided and informed me through our telepathic hair bond that it wants to be sat on so I am going to tailbone and reevaluating hair length goals there. Of course LHC has made the longer I go seem less strange to me, I don't care so much when people tell me to cut it because in my side of universe they are the minority. I also have no issues any more talking to, about or personifying my hair, and I know I'm NOT alone!! <3

I don't think the naughty mess likes scissors. Or even the mention of. What a silly mess. ;)

Before coming to LHC, I thought tailbone and longer lengths were gross. I saw so many women with those lengths with hair that wasn't well taken care of, and I mistakenly assumed that it wasn't possible to have beautiful hair that long.

Since being here, I've seen that it is possible to have hair that long and for it to be beautiful and well taken care of. Maybe I won't stop at waist length as my goal!

My mom's family has beautiful hair, from thick to thin, fine to coarse. When I was really young, I got the impression that long hair was for young women, because every single woman in my mom's family has a picture with knee length hair when she was a teen or in her 20s, but when I got to meet them they all had a bob or a perm.

So I didn't think long hair was impossible, just that it was ridiculously hard to take care of and impractical. In fact, that was the only reason I liked having curly hair when I was little. I knew it could get ridiculously long and still be super short in a pony.

So I like reading LHC and seeing how different long hairs are not letting their hair take over their life. I especially LOVE seeing older women with long hair. I want to be a grandma with super long curls with grey streaks running through it. It's at least 25+ years from now, but with curly hair, I gotta start growing NOW. Hee hee. :D

I like long hair and my view points about hair care has changed due to the fact I've been on here. I know that the real world view points get to me. I know I can look at peoples hair and tell if its healthy or not. I know what it takes to keep my hair healthy and what products seem to work. I know if you want anything in life you have to work at it. Bsl hair is short in comparison to the people I've met on here. Before joining I thought bsl was long and thought no one grew hair beyond that point.

When I got here, I wanted waist length. Soon after, my goal changed to tailbone. I've been eyeballing classic, but now that I'm getting the wet hair on upper back feeling.. I'm not really sure how far I'll make it.

I feel like APL and past will be long on me, and waist+ is long on anyone else. That hasn't really changed.

I actually have never had long hair until now and I don't really call it long. My hair is currently between APL and BSL after growing out a pixie cut from two years ago. Past breast length is definitly considered fashionable in younger women. It is really what is most fashionable in fashionable circles, if that makes sense lol. Before I came here I thought my terminal length was probably above my breast, because to me waist was amazingly long and only the genetically gifted got there. My goal is tailbone, and thanks to this website it actually feels attainable.

I've learned about new products and techniques on LHC, but being here has not affected my thinking on what constitutes long hair in any way. One can wear various lengths of long, but long is still long to me.

I've never felt competitive or insecure due to someone else's longer-than-my-hair. Neither do I think my length is in any way better or more 'worthy' of being called long than someone else's shorter-than-my-long-hair. I don't really understand that type of thinking. It seems counterproductive to my own happiness as well as to supporting the happiness of others concerning their hair.

I guess it's made me realize how long I really want my hair to be. People have alway told me that chin-pixie lengths would be best for me, but I've never really liked them. Now I know that it's not that odd to want waist-hip length hair. I've also gotten better at analyzing other people's hair.

It seems counterproductive to my own happiness as well as to supporting the happiness of others concerning their hair.

Sometimes when I see a person with drop-dead long hair and I see her around the neighborhood or store I frequent for some time, she eventually gets around to cutting it, and I often wonder what made her do it. I usually think it is because someone suggested it to her. I hate that I stare at women who I am used to seeing with long hair once they cut their hair. I know it doesn't do them any good, but I usually commend them privately for experimenting.

So, really, the envy thing I occasionally feel comes around to smack me in the face every now and then because everything changes. The happy thing is that during my forties I conquered my fear of getting a drastic hairstyle change, so now I know that these envious feelings can disappear at will and I can let it go.

I definitely have a wider range of hair lengths in mind, which means that my definition of long is longer than the average non-LHCer ("long hair" to me means hip/tailbone or longer, while to other people it might mean APL/BSL). My own hair also doesn't seem very long, though I often get surprised remarks about how long it is.

But the best thing that LHC has done for me is help me deal with my own hair as it gets longer, and help me realize that I personally can grow long if I want to. Before, I thought my hair would never get as long as tailbone, but now I see it as totally possible.

It hasn't, really... It has opened my mind up to other lengths, previously I thought hair past hip (or even waist) if it wasn't straightened or curled or blowdried was 'gross' and 'ugly', now I think "Ooh she/he must take good care of it... Wonder if she/he is on LHC?" Haha :)

I've had hair down to classic once, so for me, so I already had a longer than normal perception of long hair. However, I rarely saw someone with hair longer than mine, and almost never saw anyone else wearing hairsticks. LHC just made it seem more normal. Although before LHC, knee length and longer seemed like something that only happened in the Little House on the Prairie series.

Apart from my lovely friend in elementary school, who had a long thick braid down to her thighs (it was beautiful, but she's equally beautiful with her waist length) I had never seen anyone, heaven forbid CURLY with beyond waist length hair that was beautifully kept. LHC has definitely changed my views on length. When I was younger, I had hair down to my waist... well, that is the length i thought it was, but looking back on it now, it was actually almost tailbone length and I really want to be back there again. I have a long way to go. My original goal was waist length but now that just doesn't seem long enough! I want more! I want it to be longer. I never felt that it was possible until now! It really helps when you read others' trials and errors and to have support to go on when you really want to give up and cut it all!

I used to think APL was long hair. Waist was super long.
I now think BSL is moderately long and anything betwixt waist and hip is just long to me now. Classic+ is super long.

When I had BSL hair (the longest I've been) it didn't feel long at all. Weird! Probably because it was so heavily layered that there were only 10 or so hairs that were actually BSL. LOL.

This is my first post. I came in looking for hair toys. I was stuck with a boring french roll and have found several great alternatives. My face shape is not good for wearing 'down' hair, plus I am old and my hair is mostly gray. And I don't like hair in my eyes, hair in my mouth, etc. My last grow out I went 7 years to TB. This grow out is just over 2 years and I am about mid back now. If I were to have a goal it would be to have a figure 8 bun. I can barely make one now but it is pretty skimpy looking. Maybe next year. First thing I did was make a bun holder out of part of my old 20" pony tail I had saved. Then I sent the rest of it to Locks of Love. having fun reading posts.

I think my views on what's too long for me actually hasn't changed at all. I've been able to see alot of different hair types and how they look at different lengths which has been wonderful. I think what may have changed for me is how I can have my hair best compliment my shape. APL makes me look broad in the shoulders, mid-back to waist draws attention to my waist which is my best feature, where hip covers it over and makes me look square.

I had BSL+ hair when I first got here and it felt long. Now I'm a bit past waist, and while I constantly hear from people how long it is (I don't know anybody with hair longer than mine), I don't get that 'long' feeling anymore, the feeling I had before LHC:p.
Ofcourse, rationally I know waist+ hair is long (especially since I'm tall) but when I wasn't on here yet (even though I had SHORTER hair) I felt like I had long hair, and now it just feels okay. When I tell people I want a few more inches and be hiplenght, they all think it's crazylong haha.

I'm not sure that LHC has changed my view on what long is, but it's made me see that there are a LOT of people of all ages, hair textures, etc. who are able to grow long hair beautifully. The thing that has changed mostly for me is the idea that there are so many people my age (over 40) who are all for growing hair long, which is so different from the usual society. This makes me feel happy and encouraged. I also love how encouraging people are about texture. Having fine hair on the thinner side, I love how the general idea here is that anyone can wear long, beautiful hair if you take good care of it and it is healthy, not just people with thick or coarse hair. THis makes me feel good about my choice to grow my hair long, not only after the age of 40 but with fine hair! (*gasp*).

Anyway, as for actual length, I wouldn't say my perception of what is long to me has changed, even seeing so many people here with hair lengths that I rarely see in real life. I would still say that chin and shorter = short, chin to APL = medium, APL to waist = long, everything else is very long. :)
