View Full Version : Stretching washes - can I ignore the few 'itchies' I'm getting?

I seem to remember hearing that if your scalp is a little itchy when you're stretching washes, that you don't have to worry that any damage is occurring to your follicles - that this is something to be expected - just persevere through it. What do you know about this? My scalp is not unbearably itchy, some here and there, and one bump.

Vinegar rinses removes the itchies for me.

My scalp is definitely more itchy when I'm nearing wash day. I always thought it was my psoriasis, but maybe not? Be interesting to see what others say. :) Strangely enough though, using sulphates on my scalp really calms my itchies. (As does an ACV rinse.)

Hmm... I thought it was normal to get an itchy head before wash day.
The night before I wash, I usually get out my horn comb and give my head a good scritching, but I don't really go about "solving" my itchies in any particular way.

Oh yes it does get worse as you get close to wash day but as you strech it out your days between washing time it will move as well. When I first started streching my washes out to a week days 4 5 and 6 were horrible for itching, but now its not until day 6 that the itches start.

I think it might be good to do it slowly, so if you wash every day, first wash every other day, and if that goes well every 3 day's and if that goes well every 4 days.
that way you can see how long you can stretch it without to much itch.
I get itchy the night before washing as well, but I think that is because I oil it quite heavily.

My head itches more when I scratch or play with my hair a lot.
I noticed a very interesting pattern. When I went from washing daily to every other, my scalp would start itching the day before. It would go on for some weeks, and the itching and greasiness would be enough to keep me from stretching the wash another day. Then suddenly one day on wash day my hair would feel okay, not itching or too greasy, and I'd go another day without washing. It's gone on for some months now while stretching washes, now I don't feel the need to wash until day 7 or 8.
When the itch isn't so bad I just ignore it. It seems to be fine so far.

Well i don't stretch between washes the way most people seem to do on here. I tried it a month or two back, and went CO, but although my hair felt and looked great, it really itched, i had extreme build up and i started shedding more than normal and decided to switch back. So now i just go with how my hair feels, if it feels greasy and i cringe when i touch it (because of the oil build up) then i definitely wash it, if it feels normal, or a tad dry, i condition it. I don't wash and condition the way most people do though. I only really wash the top of my head with Sauve's Daily Clarifying (yay for 1 dollar shampoo!) and only use a small amount, and do it under the water. It kind of dilutes it a little i think when i do it that way. I condition it every day with Sauve's Waterfall Mist conditioner (Yay for 1 dollar conditioner :cheese: ) and only condition the length, using any residue on my hands for the top. I don't know if this helps or not but at the very least it gives some insight into how others may do their hair routines :eyebrows:
p.s. i found out that the suave waterfall mist is cone free... who would have thought, cone free all this time and didn't even know it!

Hello
May I suggest maybe making a lavender spray for when your scalp gets itchy. It may just calm it down before your next wash. worth a try if you have some lying around.

Itchiness never bothered me. I brush my hair thoroughly every day. My scalp loves brushies!

My head gets greasy more than itchy; its looking like 3 days is the max I can go between washes but its no biggie!

Reading this thread made my scalp itch. I used the blunt ends of my 2-prong fork over my scalp, particularly the itchy area, like a comb. That's what I do when my scalp is itchy but I'm not ready to wash it yet.
But I don't believe in stretching washes to make your scalp less oily. I read a scientific study awhile back that concluded your scalp produces the same amount of sebum every day whether you wash it or not. I tried for awhile to become a once-per-week washer, but all the hair at my scalp area is so disgusting by the end of a week that I went back to 2-3 times per week.

I'd be interested in reading that study, if you have a link, simply because my personal experience has been that washing my hair more means it needs washed more often.
