What does one mean by box braids? I've seen two entirely different definitions for them on the internet.

Boxbraid Tutorial (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=114) by Phalaenopsis :) it's a round four strand braid.

ahhh... I get it. It's a 3d 4-stranded braid!!!

Ahhh... Once I figured these out they became a strong argument for growing my hair long. I love to confuse people with these.:D
My hair is not long enough to do a box braid justice, but here it goes anyway:

I'll have fun this month! I mastered this braid earlier this year and I love it!
So here is the picture I posted in February to celebrate this accomplishment.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=7013&pictureid=96740

And here is a braided bun where I used a 4-strand box braid.

And I'll no doubt add more! :D

Here's mine. I actually found this great to try. I do like to follow visual charts so the link was perfect for me - thanks!

I can not get this one to work. I keep ending up with the third strand not braided in somehow. I followed the picture post and did a google search and didn't find a tutorial. What am I doing wrong?

Ahahaha, I got it!
I found a tutorial from the archives that helped.

didn't realize it was a weaving type pattern.

I still cant master this braid in a single, but I can do a halfway decent version when split into twin braids...

I hadn't tried this one for some time so I just did it again. I used the over two, under one pattern. I think there is another pattern that produces a dimensional braid that looks a little different.

The braid looks cool but it eats up a lot of length and I have a looong un-braided end because the front of my hair is tapered.

I'm sick in bed so you don't get pics right now. I'll try again later in the month and post pics then.

Ahh, this is such a cool braid! The consept is very easy, but in practice it's more difficult.. :p I have layers + not long enough hair to do just one braid, so I did pigtails. You'll only get picture of the good looking side, though. ;) This was my second try.

http://www.longhaircommunity.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=7777&pictureid=101927

I can't imagien how I'm going to manage this on the back of my head when my hair gets long enough! It was difficult enough when I could see my fingers. I guess practice makes perfect!

Looking good, bunzfan!

I used to do a 2-D version of this braid (4 stranded, but flat instead of boxy) which looks pretty similar to yours. :)
Then one day I wasn't paying as close attention and braided a bit tighter, and I got the "proper" box braid in all it's glory. :p

I'll try to post a photo later.

I've only ever tried this braid on my Barbie dolls. :D Never tried on my own hair. I think maybe I'll try it next time I oil my hair, then it's less slippery and easier to manage.

Another box-braid bun - a cinnabunned box braid, and two small box braids from a half up that are first looped like a bow and fastened with a small Flexi-8 and then looped around the cinnabun.:D

Here's what I've got. I can do the braid if I keep the fourth strand in my mouth or under my chin. but transitioning to finish it off over my shoulder is less than successful so I have a bit of a tassel.

@Alvrodul please post a pic of your accomplishment.

@julliams very well done. You have made me want to attempt. I will do so tomorrow. If I am successful, I too will post a photo.

The directions seem simple enough, I just hope I can do it without having the slack I tend to have with braids due to needing to pull up over my head to finish them.

@Alvrodul...beautifully done!

I think the "trick" to using box braids in an updo is to do the braiding slightly loose, so they have more "give" when you style them.

It hasn't been long since I mastered this braid and I just love it, especially as a half-up either left down or as a bun. I think it holds very well as bun and is more comfortable than a normal braid, maybe it's the roundness...

I love this braid! I tend to do it more often than and english braid. On a bus ride I did this braid and all the girls in my class were sitting there talking about my hair and how 'I don't even know how she does a 4 strand braid'

However I don't have my camera on me right now. So it might be awhile before you see a picture of mine.

AlleyKitten

You really need three or four hands to start this braid. Once I got down to the last eight inches or so, I was able to keep all the strands in my fingers and do it fairly efficiently, but the beginning was murderous! Let's all pretend that this picture is in some kind of beautiful setting, and was in no way taken by me in the bathroom mirror ;)

Garnett, I also tried it multiple times and gave up because it was messy. Too many extra hairs sticking out all over. I think it looks good on people who look good in braids (not me).

It seems to, usually my English braids reach a bit longer than my box braid did. But I haven't actually measured.

I like doing the box braid with a scarf. Strand 1: one end of scarf, strands 2 and 3: one half of hair each, strand 4: other end of scarf. Braiding is easier, and the result is a beautiful pattern and a much thicker braid.

Note to self: take a photo next time.

I'd say so, at least for me. Also, I've always been under the impression that more strands = using up more length. I may be wrong with the general assumption, but my french boxbraid is shorter than a regular french braid.

dfotw, that is so clever and pretty! What are the dimensions of your scarf?

Thanks, Idun! All credit to Blandine, I sometimes do this with English braids, but I hadn't thought of box-braiding with scarves...

That particular scarf is 1,80 meters long and 50 cms wide (a common neck scarf from H&M), but the material is very thin and 'squishy'. I made a ponytail, slipped one end of the scarf through the elastic and pulled until the two halves were more of less the same.

I haven't tried dutch braiding the box braid - it looks like it would be something I ought to try, judging from your pictures, arc691. And I really wish my hair were long enough that I could do what you did - wrap them round and round and round my head!

What an interesting braid! and so pretty on everyone's hair.

Here's my third attempt and the only one that made it to the end. It's not as tight as I'd like it, and it took until the third time to realize when I brought it over my shoulder that under-under-over turned into over-over-under. So it's a bit sloppy but I hope to do better next time.
