Hello LHC,
I'm embarking on an experiment to see which violet shampoos suit my blonde hair the best. Does anyone have any recommendations?
So far I've learned that Lush's Daddyo smells nice but makes my hair quite dull, and Pro:Voke Touch of Silver Sensations is very nice. My hair is looking very bright.
I'm new to this, so humour my ignorance. :o

I buy the Ardell Red Gold corrector (http://www.sallybeauty.com/Red-Gold-Corrector-Plus/SBS-240817,default,pd.html?green=23877261666&cm_vc=MYBUYS)from Sallys, which is just the purple dye, and dump it into whatever shampoo I want to use at the time. Depends if I'm feeling all sensitive (Aubrey Organics) or cheap (Suave). It can be a tad drying though, so I don't use it all the time.
For some reason that little bottle has lasted me a whole year. It doesn't take much of the dye to make a difference, for me. I didn't want to buy entire big bottles in case they didn't work!

John Frieda toning shampoo is really good, not to extreme but still tones and wasn't that drying. I also used Sallys GVP version of Shimmer Lights and it was VERY purple, a tiny bit really sufficed. I preferred the John Frieda so I didn't have to worry about staining my white blonde hair grey or purple.

A powder, you say? Eeeteresting...
Do either of you have reddish blonde hair naturally? I don't want to get rid of mine, just make the blonde brighter and whiter.

Fun trick I learned when bleaching white months ago. Take your favorite shampoo and add a bit of Manic Panic or Special Effects white toner. Instant toner shampoo!

I'll have to stop and get some next time I'm in a town where there is a Sallys. I've fought the red/gold tones forever. I want my hair to be ashy blonde. I've used the Shimmer Lights with fairly good success. I've also used Aveda Blue Malva for several years. It can be drying so I've learned to add a moisturizing conditioner along with the Blue Malva. Fekkai (sp?) used to have a really nice blue poo but I haven't seen it anywhere for a few years.

Yep! I did that for my silver streaks a couple of years ago. Also, you can put a little bit of gentian violet in your shampoo.:)

I use Jhirmack Silver Brightening Shampoo. I don't see a huge difference in my hair color but it does make it soft and shiny.

I loved the L'oreal Professionnel Shine Blonde shampoo :D It's a silver shampoo but not like a dark dark purple, but it does work, plus it moisturizes your hair and makes it shine! So I loved it the best of all the purple shampoos I've tried :)

Sorry! Didn't see this earlier. Not sure if you meant me...but for me unfortunately 'brassy' would be the term :). But it's not natural. My brassiness is the result of pouring neat peroxide on to my hair, which is naturally the dark ash blonde greeny nondescript color that so many people have.

I'm curious about the Manic Panic toner. Forgive my stupidity: does it act like a bleach?

Nope, just acts like any other shade of manic panic which is just a deposit only stain except instead of adding a bright funky color its designed to neutralize the yellow tones when you're aiming for white. It also works to cut down brassiness lightly on darker shades.

I have reddish blonde/light brown hair right now and find that any violet shampoos or the like enhance the red and downplay the blonde :(

The plot thickens. I find it downplays the red. I feel we ought to put a load of blondes and redheads in a lab and experiment on them to unearth the truth. *evil cackling*

Could the Manic Panic toner be used over or with henna/cassia?

You might want to try blueish shampoos then.
As for the thread question itself, have no idea. I know my sister uses Sheer Blonde by John Frieda and says she likes it, but she's also a bottle blonde.

Jhirmack brightening shampoo is my prefered purple shampoo, and I'm a bleached blonde. I only use it once every few weeks, it helps get rid of any orange-y tones.

It is a fine every day S&C but it won't fix anything. The lightening/brightening shampoo is good for buildup and to make your hair less reddish or brassy. I avoid the conditioner, b/c I don't want my ends to be any lighter. FWIW, these don't have any peroxide - just lactic acid to clean off buildup.
I have never tried a silver or purple shampoo. I would normally use the JF brightening shampoo, and just yesterday I tried the Joico chelating shampoo, both of which helped a lot.

I used a whole bottle of Clairol Shimmer Lights Original Conditioning Shampoo (http://www.amazon.com/Shimmer-Lights-Original-Conditioning-Shampoo/dp/B000TBVGBM) and it didn't do squat. I have natural red tones throughout my hair but not enough to give me a strawberry blonde effect. I resorted to sun-in when the shimmer light didn't work. I like the sun-in color I got. But not the upkeep.

Could the Manic Panic toner be used over or with henna/cassia?
Hate to quote myself, but here's an interesting post that I have found in the Best henna for cool red/wine tones? thread:
I have also used purple or dark red manic panic (or manic panic type dyes) in lieu of other liquids with decent results. I don't do that frequently because it's an even greater hassle than tea, water, or wine, and because I suspect it inhibits the henna dye release.
Now I am wondering if it would be possible that a mixture of cassia and the manic panic toner would give you all the good aspects of cassia [thickness, more shine ...] while not releasing any of the red/green dye (but I am not sure if one does not work without the other -> no dye, no hair care?), but counteracting any red tones?!
Any ideas, opinions on this?

Interesting! I have been curious about using the Virgin Snow by Manic Panic, but since my hair is darker blonde, I don't know if it would be weird?

Clairol shimmer lights works well. Used too much it will turn your hair purple. I find manic panic rinses out too fast and doesn't color evenly. John Frieda is great if you don't want white hair.

I should mention I have dark blonde hair with highlights. I don't want white hair, but I'd love to tone down the brassiness of my hair with something like Manic Panic, since it's gentle on the hair.

I'm going to the hairdresser in an hour to put back layers and highlights to my hair. I've spent two days doing research on purple shampoo and conditionner.
My hair is quite tricky. I used to dye it copper-red and I've let my hair grow back for a year after neutralizing the color three times with various success. The orange is monstly out and I'm stock with pretty golden medium blonde lenght and long ashy rooths. I already had a consultation with an haidresser, she suggested to go darker to an ashy level 6 to cover up everything but I don't want too. I want BRIGHT hair.
Solution number two: bleached highlights plus a pastel. She also suggested lowlights but I don't want to keep bleaching my hair. Once the dye will be grown out I will do highlights with an high lift color.
Now back to the shampoo. I'm going to buy the Lush one since it has very god reviews. I'm also very interrested buy a purple deep conditionner treatment called Kromask buy the italien brand Inebrya. They make it in several colors including argento (silver) wich is lavender. I used those mask before in copper and they were great.

Back when I was experimenting with blonde hair (and, by the way, was having more fun. Until my roots started showing.) I had good luck with the aforementioned Clairol Shimmer lights. I think it really only works on pretty porous (in my case, superoverprocessed) hair. I found it VERY drying, though, like most color depositing shampoos. I was a huge fan of the old version of Manic Panic toner, I think it was actually manufactured by a UK company, and distributed in the US by Manic Panic. Haven't seen it in years, though...

My hairdresser uses So Silver shampoo on me right after my foils bleach out. I don't use anything inbetween six week visits. I think what downplays the brassiness on me is I don't use toner any more. I have a nice clean sparkly white blonde.

I like the Schwarzkopf professional silver shampoo, you also have another one from Schwarzkopf, but I haven't tried that one. The one I like so much, I have to get in a hairdresser's shop.

Bumping this up.
I tried clariol shimmer lights silver and blonde shampoo today, love how it's blended my silvers and brought the ash in my hair up a notch! Makes hair incredibly soft after too, I followed up with treseme volume conditioner for a 5 minute soak, loving my hair today!

I have the John Frieda sheer blonde shampoo/conditioner set but I haven't used it yet. I've used Timotei blonde highlights shampoo and it actually made my hair go more golden looking which I really didn't want. Now I need to find a way of getting it back to the white looking tone I had before.
I would love to know which shampoo is best for whitening blonde tones without damaging your hair.

The John frieda shampoo and conditioner are really good, they really brighten my hair up but I only use it once a week as I've heard it's drying if used to often. My mum uses the one for brunettes and her hair looks lovely.
I am trying to find a routine that suits my re- born blonde, been a dyed brown for so long id forgotten the challenge of getting blonde hair to shine as much as brown. But no more dying for my hair now, it's natural all the way! Your hair is a beautiful colour btw, give me your tips!

Blonde hair can look as nice and shiny as brown hair, but if you've bleached and dyed it to get it blonde you'll probably need to take extra care of it because blonde hair tends to be drier.
Thank you by the way! The reason why my hair is this colour is because, a few years back, I knew absolutely nothing about looking after hair so I bleached it so many times to get it this light. My hair was a wreck and it took about 2 years to get it back into healthy condition. I find the key now is just bleach my roots and maintain the rest of my hair by using blonde shampoos followed by a really good conditioner. I'm also trying to do an oil treatment once a week to make my hair shinier and softer. :)
