I thought this would be fun - a thread for pictures of brushed curly hair. :D

I'll admit not to want to brush mine right now, because I'm not sure if I'll have time to wash it tomorrow (and I'll need to wash after brushing to make it look presentable again), but I will brush before washing it next time! :)

I didn't want to start the thread without posting a picture of my own, though, so here is my dirty hair brushed, sometime in January, taken with my inbuilt laptop camera (so it's not a great picture and that's why I'll have to take a new one soon).

I hope it's ok to post a thread like this. :)

I'm looking forward to seeing lots of fluffy brushed curly heads!

This is how my mom insisted I wear my hair. For her as a straightie, the only way to have your hair presentable is to brush it before going out in public. Or for pictures. This was the Christmas picture one year; I was probably 16.

Oh, I might do that one day! Mine is not that spectacular (2b/2c type which turns to 1c/2a after some days), but if I brush the day after washing it might be worth posting here.

I do not even comb my hair between washes if i want to wear it down! Brushing (paddlebrush) usually only directly before washing.

This is a hilarious thread because so many "after" pictures look like what I have thought was the norm for my hair :)

My mom too, like a PP, thought that everyone must brush/comb their hair well before leaving the house. So I brushed my waves and curls into frizzy flatness and have always hated my hair.

Went off to college and had some wonderful curls for a while, since I'd just wash and let dry.

I loved the past 10 years or so of having it short and straight and colored--except that it's terribly damaged!

And now I'm letting it go "wild" again and NOT brushing it, because what mama don't know won't hurt her :)

But I'm glad to know that those funky brush pictures you've posted, that look like my past, are NOT what my wavy hair is supposed to look like :) Thanks!

Bea

I shall have to do this too. Except mine is already a frazzly mess because it usually gets brushed after day 1 of clean hair. It has settled down a bit now as I've not brushed it this week and its frizziness is due to crappy hair. But still...I love this idea. RedCelticCurls, I truly think you take the prize on this one. I should try this at my current length -- but maybe, as Curlsgirl says, it wouldn't be as bad now.

Here's what it looked like at a much shorter length. I don't have a "no handling" comparison, but the first picture is after combing it, and the second after brushing.

After Combing:

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c346/hairpix/1a-dec4-05-airdried-no-comb.jpg

After Brushing:

My senior year in high school, back when I was still brushing my hair, I was awarded "Girl with Coolest Hair" (there was a guy, too; we had our pictures in the senior flyer). I always wondered whether it was for real (since I was still brushing my hair then, and it was pretty bushy), or whether they did it as a joke.

I just saw the pictures at first and freaked out thinking you had cut your hair! I'm so glad they're old pictures :D Yes, what a shock that would be! These are from November or December 2005, back in my early LHC days when I was puzzling over threads that talked about boar bristle brushes. By that time, my daughter had told me never to use a brush again, so I was trying to reconcile what my eyes told me and what she told me, with what I read here.

Then the light went on... Most of that brushing advice is written by non-curlies!

(I have to confess, though, that after the curl drops out of my hair--anytime after day two or three--it feels very good to have an occasional brush. My scalp loves it.)

And I will try for a current shot , too.

The lighting is a bit weird because of where I had to stand, so please excuse the wonky colors in the photos. I had to seriously color correct the bushy photo because it was SO red. Not my color at all, and just weird! Anywho...let the fun begin! :D

The first photo is JUST out of my braid, no combing, no nothing. The second photo is after I brushed it. Can we say BOOM?

Wow. I'm so glad my sister found this site before I got old enough that people actually paid attention to my hair! I stopped brushing my hair a few years ago when she told me that it was bad for it. At the time, those who were old enough to care about my hair didn't know me well enough to say anything and all my friends paid no attention. I never got nicknames like Brillo pad or Bush! I'm 53 and have been brushing my hair a LOT all my life, in hopes of making it "smooth". I guess I'm a slow learner. This thread is a revelation. I'm too old to stop brushing it now. Besides, its usually up or braided. But the frizzies still escape even when it is up.

At least my little grand daughter doesn't have frizzies...yet.

How do you call this in english? It is kind of appropiate, it has this cute, tiny, tight spiral curls :D

Ok here's my entry.

First is my regular profile pic, it was taken a while back when we did the air-dried, no product, no manipulation project. Next is today, I took it out of the braid, brushed it with a Denman brush and then borrowed my DD's boar bristle brush and tried to use it. :silly:

There's a thread like this over at nc.com

After some time, we noticed a pattern.

The 2s looked tousled and sexy.

The 4s got big volume, but it still looked good. Sort of wild, but not an uncontrolled explosion.

The 3s had more craziness. But, the 3a's shared a bit of the 2s tousledness and the 3cs had a more controlled look closer to the 4s.

Most of the 3bs just had a hot mess.

We joked that if we couldn't tell if someone was a 3a or a 3b, we'd just have her brush her hair out and go by that.

It'll be interesting to see if that pattern holds here in this thread.

ETA:

Medvssa, if my curls looked like that brushed out, I'd wear them around like that (if it didn't cause so much damage)!

Okay, here's my contribution to the thread. I tried brushing my dry hair but I heard some unpleasant things...like snapping. So, ultimately, I finger combed. Hopefully this shows kind of what happens to my hair when I start manipulating it while dry. Imagine a bigger result if I brushed through it all. The pictures on the left are of my hair unbrushed/finger combed. But the half up on the bottom left is actually of an unbrushed half up I did after letting it dry in two twists. I noticed my hair not only gets bigger when I brush it, but also the henna/color seems to show up a little more.

Thank you for this thread, it's fascinating. Sofoulee, that BOOM was astonishing, and I showed it to my DS and he said "Oh MY!"

I had a friend in school with curly hair and it would BOOM too, so she confined it into a bun with three sausage curls, like from the 1800s. We were all so envious, but I bet she got tired of it, there was no other hairstyle she knew. I never saw her wear her hair loose, I'm sure grownups would have fussed that she needed to brush her hair.

I've learned something from this, that's for sure! Thanks!

Harley Mama, that's still a very impressive spread after your recent hair loss, much more than some people have in fact. I don't know why but I think that our brushed out hair is pretty for some reason, the more I see, the more I'm like it.

(got any pics of that newly dyed hair?)

Oops, I quoted the wrong post, so no quote now.

I actually wasn't sure of how well this thread would go - I was afraid I might get some "are you nuts? No way I'm brushing my curls!". I don't mind brushing mine, but it's short for LHC standards - as long as it's very well detangled first. And I know that the longer my hair gets, the less I want to mess with it (I'd still have done it, but it would have taken much longer, and I tend to be less careful with my hair than some, I think ).

So I really appreciate everyone who did brush or comb their hair for this thread. :cloud9:

Ok, this is a case of 'what the hell was I thinking' . I can comb/brush my hair without too much booming, but NOT a couple hours after washing, and especially not with mousse applied to help the curls to form.

These pics are only a day apart, the combed (not eve brushed) pic is during a LHC meeting last year in The Netherlands.

Here comes Da Boom! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EHFhc3BUms)

(A little backdrop music for this thread ;).)

Or this one, "Brush, brush, BOOM! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K47W0UTq_9o)"

:D

I may give this a try. Not sure how much my hair will boom at this length and in its current state of behavior. I washed it curly style this morning. Once it is dry, I will bust out a brush, if I can find one around here.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/Snowymoon14/06-23-2008MyHairbrushed.jpg
Um, boom? Kind of? See the boom stick there beyond the comb that Ella is sniffing (Ella is our occasionally visiting "other" cat)? It is actually a body brush. I had no other bristled brush to use, and the bristles were actually too soft. They were much softer than my old boar-bristle brush that I cannot find at the moment. :silly: I can say that brushing at nearly classic length is a whole new process than it was before.

Being a wavy, my hair never fully booms, but it does boom if I brush it. I can also see that even finger combing upsets the waves.

Thankfully, I escaped the triangle head look. By the time I found out my hair was curly, it had grown out from a pixie with barely any shaping done as it grew, so I had "natural layers" :o

ETA: Plus, I don't think my hair was big enough to give me the correct proportions for triangle hair.

I am so happy to be growing it out. I only gets away from the growing horizontally if it is really short or has some weight to pull the volume of it down.

Looking at it brushed out, I think the diameter of the individual hairs are finer than I thought.

Speedy, Jessie58, thank you for the compliments.

Thank you all for the compliments on my triangle head! I wish I could find the pic of me in '91 ... talk about a rockin' boom! *giggle* It was more like blonde pubic hair that was about 10 inches long! I had talked my mother into giving me a perm on those really little tiny rods ... and with the thickness of my hair then (iii) , needless to say, it was spectacularly HUGE when she finished. We got LOTS of laughs out of that. I tried relaxing it with some sort of oil for African-American hair and it took 2 weeks to wash that out. I looked like a greasy longhaired poodle.

This is an awesome thread ... maybe we should start one for old pictures ... like the triangle heads and before. We giggle every time we dig those out and see how we were stylin back then.

Wow, these are pretty amazing pictures! What a funny thread. But I'm a little disturbed at some of the combed out only pictures, because that's kind of what my hair looks like haha. It's curly but I have a feeling I'm doing what some people have said they used to- as in not detangling it properly, and acting as though it's straight. I've recently switched from detangling with a brush to a wide toothed comb, but maybe it's not wide enough...? How do you all you curlies detangle your hair properly, or at least keep the frizz on the scalp down without ruining all your perfect curls?

Don't comb your hair when it is dry, at all :) unless you are gonna wear it up, hehe. Most curlies detangle in the shower when the conditioner is still on, and that is it.
