I was called after one of these in school:

http://mi-blog.com/tora/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/nanas.miniatura.jpg

How do you call this in english? It is kind of appropiate, it has this cute, tiny, tight spiral curls :D
Nobody said it with good intentions though.

I'm not sure about anyone else but we call that a pot scourer, it's for scrubbing metal pots.

I really should do this with my hair but i've only just washed it last night and straightened it as i was off out to a formal doo so it's going to be a week before i wash it and i so don't want to have frizz for a week... will get some pix up soon.

Where I come from that is called either a "Brillo pad" or a "scouring pad" ... brand name or generic, kind of like Kleenex vs. tissue.

I want to play in this thread too ... I should have taken a picture yesterday. I don't know what I was thinking, brushing my wet hair and then letting it dry loose and then brushing it some more. It was a massive puffball.

Ahh, i get you.

When i think of a brillo pad i think of these

That's interesting, maybe it's a regional thing, then ... liberal usage of the brand name even when it's not that particular brand. :) My childhood is full of examples like that ... brillo pad, kleenex, Dinty Moore, etc.

Okay, I brushed out my baby boy's curls and I have to not do that again. It was funny, but his poor curls didn't know what they did that was so wrong for me to punish them like that! He has tight blond ringlets that turn him into our surfer dude. When brush, he is poofed out there now. WOW! His hair is quite long, just with his curls, you don't realize how long.

I'd call it a pan scratcher. I don't know if that's the correct name for it or not, but that's what I call them!

I don't know if anybody's said so yet, but it's called "steel wool"

I'm not sure how I got to this thread, but wow! Talk about flashback to another era! Keep this up and "The BOOM" will make a big comeback!

I have to say though, there's definitely something really beautiful about all the photos! Thanks!

On a side note: I think I have to re-evaluate my status, and perhaps call myself a 2c/3a? When I'm not NW/SO of course. :)

The first time I posted my brushed out curls was in 2008 (long hair pic below), and I just saw this thread again and decided to do a boom update :)

This year I cut my hair so that it's slightly below shoulder length when it's left alone (it will be long again - this is just easier at the moment!).
Here is a photo of what it looks like when it's brushed out at this shorter length. Hahaha!

deleted the post

edited a second time to say I deleted my original post because I commented about the shower curtain in the background and when I realized the post I commented on was 5 years old, I figured it was moot to comment on the shower curtain

it has been pointed out to me that it is against the ToS to delete entire posts so I've tried to explain why I did so in the first place

sorry.

:o Haha, thank you so much! Im currently back home visiting family and my 17 year old sister just left for school looking like her head had exploded, her hair is very similar to ariesfairies in colour and unbrushed texture but about twice as frizzy after she blowfried and brushed it! I've been trying to educate her on caring for curly hair but she's convinced she knows better and that she looks amazing - just wait 'till she looks back at photos in a few years!

Story related to this thread: Last night I was babysitting a very unruly three-year-old girl and she got out her ball-tipped paddle brush and kept trying to brush my hair. I took it out of its updo and told her she could touch it but I had to say "no brush, remember!" every 30 seconds. Sigh.

Before LHC I might have said to heck with it and let her brush just to see how big it would get, but knowing what I know now about ball-tipped brushes there was no way I was letting that near my head! :)

OK I recently brushed out my hair, after being CO for 1.5 weeks, because I was being frustrated by stubborn frizz. This reminded me why I went CO in the first place! I used a tangle teezer brush.

I refused to brush my hair when I was a kid, and I remember one time my teenage cousin was babysitting me and she always liked to put makeup on me and do my hair like a doll and she was trying to brush through my hair and there was such a huge tangle in it that she spent half the night trying to condition my hair over the sink, haha. I HATED having my hair brushed or combed... I remember crying my eyes out about it everytime!

Oh how I wish I could post pics. You guys ain't seen nothin' yet.
I never brush my hair out on wash day. The next day when its completely dry I'll comb it out and when I do brush I always first wet my hands and add some type of oil or serum or aloe Vera , glycerine , flaxseed or a combination of them AFTER brushing to calm down any frizz.
Or I'll mist my hair with 25% of my favourite hair conditioner with 75% water. This works really well. Then you get best of both worlds. You get the volume from brushing AND some definition to your waves/curls.

I have to brush my hair or I start getting scalp issues, dry ends and tangles.
Plus the MP brush is unlike any other brush. A regular bbb makes my hair look like a Brillo pad

I've been kinda maintaining for the past few years, chopping off about 4" or so every year to keep the ends (which are the last of my pre-LHC hair) under control.

I would never brush my hair dry. That would be breakage city for me. I do use a paddle brush to de tangle my hair in the shower after applying conditioner, though. I can set angle my whole head in just a few minutes and barely lose any hair. On the other hand, I hate wide tooth combs. They always tear out my hair.

Honeylatte- (Gosh your name makes me want to go and make a latte..:p) I agree with you about combs. I pretty much feel that way about every comb I've tried. I used to have a paddle brush years ago that a stylist told me to use. An aveda paddle brush. It was decent as far as brushes go. I didn't use it much though. And I never tried it in the shower. Have you tried the tangle teezer what do you think about it?

A curly perm is when you get your hair chemically treated to make it curly. I'm naturally a 2a/2b, but I used to be a 3b with the perm (you can see the change in texture from around shoulder length to the ends).
Yes, that is my natural colour (I'm a blonette, and my hair seems to change colours drastically under different light conditions). Thank you!

Thanks!! I can definitely see, that when I brush now, it's not as BIG as when I was pre-curly, so all the care/conditioning/etc helps it to naturally stay more tamed, like my husband says, if you want it as big as when you were young, you'd have to spend a month or so of brushing it to get it back to that poof!

This is awesome!

I actually brush regularly. I tried not brushing for awhile, but I normally wash only about every two weeks, but my scalp can't handle that if I don't brush, so I end up having to wash about twice a week, and the tangles are murder. I wear it either in a bun or braided every day anyway, so fluff works for me. I'm headed for the next wash in a few days though, so I'll try to remember to take a picture the first time I get it fully brushed (usually about 3 days later, but I'll try for a little sooner for larger boom-ness).

Haha I like my hair unbrushed better, too, but it is indeed amusing to brush it :P Actually I do brush it regularly (with a Tangle Teezer), but only on non-wash days, after my hair's been braided overnight - it doesn't get nearly as big and frizzy as the curls disappears into waves when braided.

Well, I actually PREFER and LOOOOVE my curly 3b hair all detangled- (I use a dime-sized amount of John Frieda coney hair serum) and brushed out with EVOO, put in a lwb to dry, brushed out (using a BBB starting from the tips and up each section of hair to spread out the EVOO) as it dries, back into a lwb until it dries.

Here is a link to what my hair looks like all brushed out and dried using EVOO:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=11912&attachmentid=15779

And not brushed out -left to dry curly:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=11912&attachmentid=15031

My big beautiful lwb with dried, "straightened, brushed out hair:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=11902&attachmentid=13939

For several who have posted very frizzy curly hair that has been brushed out, if you brush about a dime-sized amount of EVOO on your hair when it is still damp and "set" it into a lazywrapbun, and brush it out periodically as it dries, then back into a lwb, you wil be surprised with how your curly hair turns out. I am a 3b with a 4.5 inch circumference pony tail at hip+ length.

Well, brushing curly hair doesn't have to be damaging, but if you just brush it and then leave it loose, it will tangle awfully. If I were to brush my hair out in the morning and leave it loose all day, I'd have dreadlocks by the evening. If I do brush my hair, I must put it in very tight braid or bun immediately afterwards.

It might look interesting to someone who hasn't experienced it, but it's not worth it.

So the next time you read a Harlequin Romance book and it talks about the heroine brushing her curls so they framed her face, blah blah blah, remember this thread! If only authors knew WTF they were talking about when it comes to curly hair!!!

Anna it was crazy let me tell you. Normally I just have waves from brushing the curls to braid and wearing it up. But it is not massive or anything. I am a wurly from the waist down but my hair really holds to braid waves because it is naturally wavy but when I do more than two let them for more than 1 day and brush them lol it was priceless to see the scared look on people. It was like they have seen a leprechaun -yeti walking around.

This is great! Haha, I love seeing this in action– my hair is not curly, just wavy, so this doesn't happen (if anything my hair actually just falls out and gets pretty straight if I brush it), but I remember years ago hearing the mom of one of my friends telling us that the reason her daughter's hair was always in a braid is that if they brushed it out it got super puffy, like a "triangle" of hair. They called it "clown hair", which I thought was funny, but I was never really sure what they were talking about although I had somewhat of a picture for it in my mind. I clicked on this forum wondering if this was what they were talking about, and I think it's pretty safe to say it was!

You know, that is a much more understandable reason against brushing than "it's poofy" because I would adore having crazy insane volume, and thought if I had curly hair, I would probably brush it sometimes because I like the way it looks, but I can see how brushed curls would be prone to tangling if left loose.

I started CO-washing when I was 15, so at least I "discovered" my curly hair pretty early, which I'm thankful for. It's also weird that it changed texture, but apparently it was the same for both my dad and granddad, from straight to wavy/curly (can't really tell the type as they both have short hair). So I guess it was puberty and hormones that did it. And my mum always had a pixie (now that she has shoulder length+ it is at least 2b or even 2c, and she even has some ringlets) so there was noone to tell me how to take care of curly hair. But at least I can give my little sister advice now ;) her hair also went from 1c/2a to 3a some years ago (some parts of her hair even being 3b I would say, she has tighter ringlets than me).

I had my hair go from 1b'ish, 1b/c I think, to 2b/c - not that big of a difference you'd think, but the frizz I got, OMG. When it was foggy out my nicely blown-out hair always floofed up and I never could figure it out. I thought I had "difficult" straight hair.

How many other people are in that same boat, I wonder?

But the curly girl method is really popular and even straight haired ladies are trying it these days, to just do it because they like it or to try and see what texture they are.

LOL! I learned from an early age not to do this. Because, well,

Not a good look. Although I guess in the 80's it would have been.

I actually think this looks quite cool haha! This thread is so much fun :)

For obvious reasons I don't brush it very often, but do sometimes before a shower.

In this thread: people who look like my old classmates who were insecure about their poofy hair because they didn't know they weren't supposed to brush through curls. Yes this is or was very common

I spent about 35 years of my life not knowing that I should not brush my curls. I just lived in a huge, frizzy mess. I also never used conditioner until I was about 30, so it was really bad before then.

By the way, is it just me, or is anyone else thinking that the frizzy brushed-out hair has a beauty of its own?

Yes, I do think so. I was always rather taken with the Afro styles of long ago. There was something so soft and poofy about them. :)

AuNaturel, I love your hair! It's so, so pretty. The brushed curls are such a contrast, too.

meepster, I don't mind it on other people at all, but on myself? Eeeeeh. I'd pay a lot for hair that would naturally not do this.

But, in a good spirit and maybe as part of this acceptance journey, I'll share mine too (it was heavily oiled and slathered in conditioner a few days prior, so this is not its... maximum state, as it's being weighted down a lot):

YES, I love the look. Poofy hair is awesome, the bigger the better :D

Yes! But I wish my hair would poof on top, too, and not just turn into triangle head.

Some of my relatives have Afros, and I always felt rather sad that I missed that particular gene. I love the soft poofiness too.

Lately when I brush mine out it goes into 40s waves so I'm happy about that.

Ok, I’ll play:

I was somewhat shocked by the poofiness of it, to be honest, but there it is.

Sometimes I wide tooth comb it out before washing, to detangle less in the shower. I think it's my destiny to be Hermione Granger for Halloween this year. 😁
....or maybe Hagrid 😬
