View Full Version : Talk To Me About Bangs

I'm considering bangs, but now that my hair is longer and I'm trying to grow my layers out, I'm not sure what will work and what won't. My hair is now BSL and hasn't been trimmed since November 2009. My ends desperately need a little love and maintenance, and since I'm going to the hairdresser's anyway, I figured this will be the right time to do something other than just cut an inch or two off the length.

I had straight-across bangs as a little girl, with both short hair and long, and I've had long angled, sideswept bangs, blending into long layered hair, for most of my long-haired adult life. My shortest "bangs" in the front, though, are now several inches past my chin, so can't really be called bangs any more!

Other considerations: I drive a convertible, so I need something that's either long enough to pull back into a headband in front of a bun/pony or that's short enough to not whack me in the eyeballs as I drive. :)

I'd love pictures, but I seem to only be able to see some of the photos posted within threads (any ideas about why that might be?) and I can't access galleries yet. Still, if anyone can manage to post suggestions that I might be able to see, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

I have blunt-cut bangs which vary between eyebrow length and eyeLASH length depending on when I last trimmed. :p I love it. It covers my forehead, which is basically necessary for me, it soften updos, and it gives you something you could change day to day easily. Straight down, sideswept, pinned back in a bump... So I'd definitely recommend it.

my bangs were too thick so am growing them out-leaving only a fine fringe that can easily blend with my hair for a no bangs look if 1 want..my thicker bangs are now almost 2 1/2 inches longer than my fine fringe bangs..am growing out my layers and most of my bangs for a thicker look and more sleek buns/twists[layers cause all those shorter hairs to pop out]

I have longish side bangs, and I love them. I think I would look really weird without something framing my face, but they're versatile enough that I can pull them straight back or push them out of the way if I want to. Side bangs are an easy way to get something similar to the look of bangs without the commitment of blunt, straight-across bangs!

I have sideswept bangs and I drive a convertible too. To be honest, I never found it an issue when I am driving :p It only gets in my face if I am sitting in the back where there isn't a wind deflector.

Disclaimer: I happen to be growing out my bangs though, but it wasn't because of bangs+wind+convertible. I just never had it long and wanted to see if it works for me.

Do you have problems when putting your hair up? I want to get back to the face framing thing too. :)

I have some other layers in my hair, but my bangs are almost chin length at their longest and in between my bottom lip and chin at their shortest. They sweep across my forehead though, so I don't have a problem with putting my hair up. If I want them down I just leave them and they look fine, but if I want them back I'll just pull them over with a bobby pin or comb them straight back into my ponytail/bun/whatever. I highly recommend getting some variation of side bangs if you're looking for the face framing look- they just make the whole look softer and they are very easy to pin back and grow out if you so choose. :)

I've had bangs cut into my hair many times. I found them faaaarr too much effort to maintain, constant washing and straightening was needed to have them looking nice and not stuck to my forehead. And even when they did look nice a few hours later they would look crap. If you want bangs go for it, but just remember they sometimes can be alot of work to keep looking nice and they take a long time to grow out if you decide you no longer want them :)

It might be that or it could be because I tried to link from facebook - which SHOULD have worked because I specifically got the "public link", but maybe not. Try this.

Miss Catrina your bangs are so cute! I got a crazy urge and cut mine about 2 weeks ago and I really like them now. I think they make me look younger and I noticed that DBF was more attentive after the bang cutting...so Im sticking with it!

I love bangs or fringes as we call them over here. Ive had one for most my life but have been growing mine out now for nearly 4 years, so can't really call it a fringe no more its past bsl now.

I may at some point cut one back in, seeing photos like Miss Catrina's certainly make me tempted. I think her fringe is just perfect.

Super cute bangs Ms Catrina!:)

I love bangs, but I think a lot of it depends too on your hair texture. It seems like with your hair type, they would lay down nicely though. It's just with summer, I find I have to wash them every day because my hair's so fine, so I'm growing mine out with the rest of my hair-

Maybe you could do a gradual side-swept bang, going a couple of inches shorter, and then take a plunge in a few weeks if you still want to try them?

I had thick blunt bangs last time I was at waist.
PROS: I loved them - they updated my look without losing the length. Stylist loved them - very trendy at the time.
CONS: Husband hated them - said they hid my face. Pain to grow out and got greasy/sweaty forehead on hot days.

I had long bangs then made the mistake of cutting them last yr. They are now about chin length, they are taking forever to grow! They did not grow any last month, I think.
I wish that I had left them long, made a side part & made a side sweep of them, that is what they kind of looked like when they was short but they was a big pain in not laying right.
Oh well, live & learn.

I've had bangs most of my life, but trying to grow them out. half is about chin length, and cut the rest back a couple of months ago. ( why don't the back of my hair grow as fast as my bangs) Getting to be summer and tired of washing and curling everyday. So try to grow all of them out . I look mad all the time without bangs. so....we will see.

I currently have bangs about eyebrow length. I decided upon bangs because I wanted a change with out taking a great amount of length off. If I may offer a suggestion. :) I suggest cuting the bangs a bit longer so when doing up syles of even leaving it done you can side swip them, that way they look less harsh. I would post a picture but I'm not able to do so at the moment. Hopefully once I've been a member for quite some time I can update and load a picture.

I get tired sometimes, but I still won't cut bangs. I think it was little Orca that posted about the snap in bangs, this way you can have bangs when you want without the cut. Search the threads these are very nifty and work really well!!

I like mine. They soften updos, hide my acne, and are pretty much maintenance free. Funnily, I originally got them so I wasn't playing twinsies with my boss. We are from similar ethnic backgrounds with similar length hair, and I just wanted to distinguish myself a bit.

I have side swept bangs.
Here is a pic of them after I bleached the under side of them.
